Danger of Drifting with Brandy. We heard ihe other day of a singular, and, we believe, a new effect of the application of brandy as a medicine. A gentleman, con valescing from an attack of sickness, was recommended by his physician to rub him self all'over every morning and evening with the very beat brandy. ■ ' j The invalid accordingly sent to his family grocer, with whom he had dealt for years, , and ordered a sample of the best old cognac. Home it came, and that very evening it was tried—outwardly, - of course. The convales cent fell better, much better, and he conlin ued to feel better for a day or so, until he avmkeyme morning, and, to his horror, dis covered that-his entire cuticle —at least where it had been rubbed with the old cognac—had become of a deep crimson color. He sprang out of bed in alarm. The fam ily was aroused ; a servant despatched in hot husle for the doctor. The invalid's wits were terribly shaken by this never-before-heard-of Catastrophe. What conld cause it ? He looked a picture for a painter, as he sat be. fore a large looking-glass in an arm chair, ruefully surveying his crimson covering. It was almost ludicrous. It was quite as bad as Wf. Tmlehal Titmouse’s predicament about his purple-green hair". But this could be no laughing matter ; it must be some extraor dinary phenomenon, as he explained it to his wondering and alarmed family. “And just imagine, my dear, how I shall look all my life, if this confounded thing isn-’t cured. Like a boiled lobster—like a boiled lobster T I shall go by no other name ! Oh dear! Oh dear!” The door bell rang ; the front door open ed ; in rushed the doctor. instant he could not contain himself—be had to drop into a chair, and laugh it out, *‘Oh, it’s very funny to you, no doubt doc tor ; but how would you like to go about all the balance of your days looking like an overdone lobster 3” The doctor burst out again at this'j but he saw that the sick mao’s family were really alarmed, and he soon sobered down into his usual pulse-feeling gravity. “Maybe it’s the iodine, doctor ■’’’sugges ted the anxious wife. “Oh, its ironed in, no doubt,” said the pa lient, indulging the ruling passion strong in death. The doctor shook his head. “Had that rubbing been doneias he pre scribed 3” “Yea, faithfully.” “Good brandy 3” “Yes, the very best—we use no other.’’ “Let me have it.” The brandy was brought. The doctor tasted it, and shook his head again. “I’ll take it home to examine it chemically. There are so many tricks among liquor deal ers.” “Oh, no fear of that with our grocer. He sells hone but the best liquors, imported di rect by himself.” “No doubt. I’ll look into it nevertheless.” And calming the family alarm, the good doc tor departed, the pure old cognac in his pock et. That evening came a note from him:— ■ “Dear L ‘ make yourself perfectly easy. The cognac is firat-proof whiskey, nnd won’t hurt you. It was the logwood in it that did your business.” Little Bettie. “Hand me some water, buddy, wont you 7” “In a minute, Bettie.” And Beltie’s fevered cheeks were pressed again to the pillow ; and little Harry’s hands went on as busily with the trap he was making, and at length he entirely forget the request. “Please get it now, buddy,” he at last heard,’ and scattering knife, triggers, and strings in his haste, he was soon holding a cup to her crimson lips. ' But she turned her head languidly from il. “Not this, please ; but some fresh and cold from the well,” she said. “O don’t be so particular, Bettie; this is fresh ; and I’m so busy I can’t go now; won’r this do 7” She no longer refused, but quietly look the cup which he offered, and it was the last, last lime she ever called upon her brother for an act of kindness ; ere another day had pasted, she stood beside the river of life, and drank its cool waters never to thrisl again. And of all who wept over that little brown coffin, as it lay on the table before the pulpit, there were none who shed more bitter tears than the little boy who could not forget that he had refused the last request of his little sis ter. Little children, are you kind to one an other, or are you cross, selfish, and fretful ? Remember, then, the time will come, when they will bo beyond your reach; and then, O how gladly would you give all your pos sess to have them back again I You might gather all your books and toys ; everything for which you are now so willing to contend, but all you could do with them would be to place them on the grave of one you had wronged. It would not bring them back.— Henry was a kind-hearted boy, and dearly loVed his little sister; and she had only been sick a little while, so that he did not consid er her dangerously ill; but this was no com fort to him when she was gone. “O mother !” he would say, “if I had only brought that water for her, I could bear n, but now she is where I can never, never wait on her again.” Think of this when you are tempted (o quarrel, to be selfish, or unkind; for do you know if one of you should die, the rest would remember every act of unkindoess, every bitter word which had fallen from their lips ? But then it would be too late to recall it, too late to aslc forgiveness.— N. C. Prespyterian. A grain of carmine will tinge a gallon or water so that in every drop the color will be perceptible: and a grain of musk will scent a room twenty years. Just so if a man cheats a printer—the stain will be forever visible on the minute atoms of his soul, and wilt leave a scent of rascality about an indi vidual strong enough to make an honest man turn up bis nose in disgust and kick him out of his presence, if he can gel rid of him no other way. The Riches of the Poor. “Is he dead,?” That fearful question drew us near the little group who stood at the corner of the street. 1 “Fell from the scaffolding,” we heard af our elbow. We glanced up'al the half-built house, and then with a shudder looked from the scaffold to the ground, expecting to see a labordr who had fallen from his post. Alas I there .was before us no man, cold and dead, but a little child, poorly clad, of obscure birth. He had seen some four summers, and with childish daring had climbed the scaffold to see “papa” build the house. His little face was set, and the fearful pallor of death was spread over the small features. By his side, as he Jay on the cold stones, knelt a rough man, down whose sunburned cheeks the tears poured as he moaned, — “Oh, Lorny ! Lorny ! Who'll tell your mammy, mayourneen J” No need to tell her, —such sore news trav els fast. Even while we stood there she came through the crowd, her arms covered with soapsuds, her cheek pallid, her tearless eyes wild with that awful news. Her first cry was, “Oh, Jimmy ! how can you let him lie on ihe cold ground 1” and she caught the poor little body to her mother’s heart. Then the tears came, —and seated on the stones, she rocked to and fro with her sad burden clasped close to her breast, moaning and wailing for her only child. friends gathered around. Rough faces,'softened and hard voices sounded sweet with words of sympathy. One comforter whispered,— “He’s better off now, honey. You are very poor, you know.” The mother looked up, aud oh ! the pathos in her voice as she said, — “Yes,;—he was all the riches we had !” Brown had for some time been much in love with a young lady, and one evening when visiting her, and wishing to be a little particular, asked permission on taking leave, to call her by the name of some animal.— The request was granted, on the condition that she should have the same privilege.— When Brown made his conge, he said— “ Good night, Dear/" —Good night, Bore /” replied ihe lady. Brown, from that night foreswore the company of young women. From them the medicine was borrowed by the English and Dutch physicians residing there and by their recommend ation it was soon employed in Europe. ' In process of time this medicine has come into general use, and is highly spoken of by the best medical writers. Physicians recommend it mostly for complaints of the urinary organs, such as grave), a morbid irrita tion of the Wadder and urethra, retentloh of urine, also incontinence |of urine from want of tone in the urinary organs. It cools the unnatural heat and relieves pain; and in many coses of long standing it has been effectual when other valuable medicines had failed to produce an effect. The active princi ple of this medicine is a volatile oil which is mostly lost by the old process ol boiling. Hence it requirts great care and skilful management to prepare this medicine properly. FLUID EXTRACT OF BUCHU is a strong or concentrated preparation prepared by the new process called 1 Displacement."
