Report of the Committee appointed to superintend the Burning of ihe Iron tiafes t at Readings Feb. 27, 1857. ! “The undersigned, members pf the committee, do respectfully report, that we saw: the two Safes origi nally agreed upon by Parrels 6i Herring and Evans &, Wulson, placed side by sidp in a furnace, viz: The Safe in use by the Paymaster of the Philadel phia and Reading Railroad Company, in his offi'ce at Reading, manufactured UyjFarrels & Herring, and the safe in use by H. Alaniz, in his store, manufactured by Evans SL Watson,andputinbooks arid papers precisely alike. < i The fire was started at o'clock, A. M., and kept up until four cords of green hickory, two cords dry oak and half chestnut topi entirely consumed, the whole under the superintendence of the subscribers, members nf the Committee. The Safes were then cooled off with water, after which they were opened and the liodks and papers taken out by the Committee and;£dnt to H. A. Lanlz’s store for public examination,! after they were first examined and marked by, the Committee. The books and papers taken from ijie Safe manufactured by Evans &. Watson were but slightly affected by the intense heat, while those jlakcn from the Safe manufactured by Farrels &, {Herring, were in our judgment, damaged folly fifteen per cent more than those taken from Evans <&.
