John Ph<esix writesr “Accompanied by my old friend Butterfield, who' had joined us tti Memphis, I landed at New Orleans, and proceeded forthwith to the St. Charles Hotel. At this great tavern- Amos -expected to meet his wife who had just arrived from Califor nia to rej an him after a three month's sepa- I never saw a man so nervous. — ration. He rode on the oulside of lire coach with ihe driver, that he might obtain the earliest view of the building that contained his adored one. It was with great difficulty that I kept pace with him ns he “tumultuously rushed” up Ihe steps lending to the Rotunda, In an in stant ha was at the office and gasping “Mrs. Butterfield.” “.In the parlor, Sir,” replied Dan, and he was off. I followed and saw him s'op with-surprise as he came to the door. In 'he centre of the parlor stood Mrs. Butter field. That admirable woman had adopted .the very latest and most voluminous style; nnd hiving on a rich silk of greenish hue, •looked like a lovely bust on the summit of a new-mown hay-stack. Butterfield was ap palled for a moment; but hearing her cry “Amos!” he answered hysterically,' “My Amanderl” and rushed on. He ran three times round Mrs. Butterfield, but it was of no ttsc, he couldn’t get in. He tried to climb her,- but Ihe hoops gave way and frustrated the attempt. He extended his arms to her; she held out hers to him ; tears were in their ey'ea. It was the most affecting thing I ever witnessed. Finally Mrs. Butterfield sal down, nnd Amos got behind her chait and kissed -■her, until their little offspring, by howling and biting the calf of his leg created a diversion. They were very happy, so were the people .in the parlor. Everybody appeared delighted and a small boy, a year or two .older than little Amos, jumped up and down like a whip saw, and holloaed “Hoopee!” with all his might. “Butterfield,” said I an hour or two later, “1 suspect that Mrs. Butterfield has adopted hoops.’’ “Oh I yes,” answered he, I saw that stick ing ou'. Perhaps it will obviate the tenden cy she had to blow up. I’m glad of it.” Kluvfn Years K Slave. —The follow ing pingnph is from ihe Westchester, Pa., Village Record: “We m"nuoned in the last Record that James Henry, a colored man, born in West chester, had been kidnapped, sold as a slave, and remained in bondage, in Virginia, until he made his escape, a period of eleven j’ears. Since our'publicnion Henry has called at our office, and detailed a considerable portion of his experience. He is a light complected ne gro, and his father being a preacher, he was taught to read and write. He has a good ad dress, and is fluent of tougue. In 1833, at ten years of age, he entered the U.S. Navy, where he remained eight or ten years, and was discharged ns a first class seaman, with a medal for good conduct. After being on shore for some lime, he engaged as a seaman on board a vessel bound for the West Indies. The captain of this vessel, having sailed, an chored on the coast of Virginia, look him ashore in a boat, and telling him he would Bhortly be back, pushed off to the ship, and left him on shore. The captain did not re turn, ani Henry soon found that he wrs claimed and treated as'a slave; he was knocked down and ironed, and in company with various other negroes was marched off to the South and sold. They traveled during night, from station to station, being in day time confined in strong slave pens. He everywhere protested his freedom, but re ceived no attention ; no man was willing to befriend him, and he was doomed to bondage for years and years, until he could find the means of escape. How shall this man Henry obtain redress upon those who have enslaved him—boat and mauled him—and insulted the majesty of Pennsylvania, which was bound to protect him, or avenge his wrongs ? How ? Can any one answer ? The Supbbme Codbt. —Five of ils nine silk gowns are worn by Slaveholders. More than half iis long Bench is filled with Slave ho'ders. Its Chief Justice is a Slaveholder. The Free Stales have had the majority onlv seven years, this century. Even the Free States' Judges are chosen from Slavery ex tending parlies.
