Midnight weaves the darkening, shadows, that creep above the tree-tops j the sick-hucd flowers hang their heads so heavily laden with the tears of night; the magnificent trumpet-flower clings more closely to the lowering pile of brick ; the delicious, fragrant grape' that loves the latticed cot swings its fidf'tendrils lazily in the night air. That mother sits alone with the dying; alOoe fo catch the death-damp gather on her cherub’s brow ; alone to press the quivering little form to hers, when his dark, wing shall shadow her “ household pride,” who cometh stalely as a conqueror. When confidence in human nature is at so very low an ebb as the present moment, it is pleasant to know that it has not deserted the whole earth, and fled to other spheres. Some of it lingers yet on Iho western border of our Slate at least, according to the relation of a traveler form New York, who says, that, when he left the cars at Camden, he wanted to vis it a place diverging from the railroad line about ten miles. He was entirely unknown, though certainly a respectable-looking person ; and, therefore, his first surprise was, that the stabler, to whom he applied, should have fit ted him out with a handsome horse and bug, gy for.his Journey with alacrity, and without tho slightest recommendation, or inquiry whatever. The next event that awakened wonder hap pened thus. When half way on his return, he missed the valuable whig, with which he had been cntrusled. He haiTleft it, or drop! it, coming along—at any rate was missing. His good horse did not need one, as far as he knew ; but he could not proceed with comfort without one notwithstanding.— But no whip could he purchase anywhere.— He stop! at a stable ; none was to be had there, A boy, however, was met with, who observed that he had one himself, but declined to sell It at any price, [t was clear he had never been in New York, where they will sell anything they possess. The spirit of independence had not been expelled by that of cupidity and traffic from the boy’s breast. Bui, says he, “ I will cut you a slick, sir, that will answer your purpose almost as well.” Ho did so instantly, and it worked as favora bly ns he had promised, for in fact iho noble steed neither needed whip nor stick. Si ill be had on his return, to reckon wiib the owner. Hiving paid for Hie loan of the, horse and buggy agreenblv to contract, one j thing, the gentleman observed, remains to be settled. “ What is that]” was the reply.— “ The whip ; I wish to pay lor thal, as you see I bring back no'liing but a stick.” “ Did you lose it V' he replied. “ Yes,” said he, “ or else I left it where 1 visited.” “ Very well,” ho answered, “ in either caso, as my name is on the handle, some honest person will find and return it to me. I am willing to trust to that.” “ But [ am not,” replied the gentleman. “ I don’t believe that you will ever see your whip again, and therefore in sist upon paying its value.” The owner, who appears to have been in Now York ns little as the bov that cut the stick, positively re fused to take anything, repeating, that “ some honest person would return it to him, because it had his name upon it.” Alas I how many umbrellas, books and numberless articles have been appropriated by people as their own, though the names of their real proprietors daily stared them in the face, and said as loud as such names could speaK/ 1 you.are a thief, sir, for you have got another person’s properly, and you know it.— Return the stolen goods, and do not be a mean scoundrel any longer.” At length seeing the gentleman, who did not know, the worth of the article at all, or he would have the money at once, abso lutely;. resolved to pay an equivalent, the owner consented to set a price upon it which he_ accepted ; but it was afterwards asccr. lamed, thnt'it could not have exceeded half its value. This bos been prepared to meet that, demand, and an exten sive trial af jibs.virtues has conclusively shown with what it'accomplishes the purpose designed. It is easy to make a physical pm;.but not easy to make the bestof all which should have , none of the-objections, but all the advantages, of every other. This has been attempted here, and with what success we would respectfully submit to the public decision. It has been unfortunate for the patient hitherto that almost every purgative medicine is acrimonious and irritating to the bow els. This is not. Many of them* produce so much griping pain and revulsion in the system os to more than counterbalance the good to bo derived from them. These piV/s produce no irritation or pain, unless it arise from a previously existing.obstruc tion or deimrt&hbnt In the bowels. Being purely vegetable, can arise from their use in any quantity; but it is better that any medicine should bo taken .judiciously. Minute directions for their* um Jn thd several .diseases to which they ore ap plicable arc given on the box. Among the com plaints which have been speedily cured by them, we may meutiop Liver Complaint, in its varioub forms of Jaundice, Indigestion, Languor and Los? of Ap petite, Listiessnoss, Irritability, Bilious Head rich o', Bilious Fever, Fever aud Ague, Fain in the Side and Loips; for, in, truth, all these arc hut tho con sequence of diseased action in the liver. As on aperient they afford prompt aud sure relibf in Cos tiveneßS, Piles, Colir, Dysentery, Humors, Scrof ula and Scurvy, Colds with soreness of the body, Ulcers and impurity of the blood; in short, any and every case where a purgative is required. * 1 They have also, produced some singularly suc cessful cures in Rheumatism, Gout, Dnmsy, Gravel, Erysipelas, Palpitation of the Heart, Pains in tho Back, Stomach, and Side. They should bo freely taken id the «j!pring of the year, to purify the blood aud prepaid the system for the change of seasons. An occasional dose stimulates the stomach and bowels into healthy action, aud restores tire appe- titc and vigor. They purify the blood, and, by their stimulant action on the circulatory system, reno vate the strength of the body; and restore the wasted or diseased energies of the whole organism. Hcuco an occmdomd do-e is ; advantageous, even though no seriimi derangement exists; but un necessary dosing should never bo carried too far, as every purgatho medicine reduces the strength, when taken to excels. The thousand f uses in which a physio is required cannot be enumerated here, but they suggest themselves to the reason of every body; and it is confidently believed this pill will answer abetter purpose than any tiling which has hitherto been available to mankind.
