New VorU. Feb. 11 The trial of Al bert T. Patrick for causing the death of W. M. Rice was resumed after a lapse of six days, caused by the ill ness of a jtircr. Mr. Ilcuse of counsel for defense objected strongly to the testimony be ins accepted by the court on the ground that Mr. Potts' conversations with Patrick were privileged. The court, however, allowed Mr. Potts to testify to matters prior to Patrick's arrest. The witness swore he had known Patrick since 1870. becoming intimate with him in 1S9H. He had never seen Mr. Rice in Patrick's office though the latter vas In the same suite as his (Pi.tts'). Patrick had told him a rich client had died and made him resid uary le-rntee. Patrick had also shown him many of the documents now in dispute, among them the "Patrick" will, ai.d he had told Patrick he did lie it think the will would hold. Mr. Potts also advised Patrick not to fill out and use the blank checks purported to have been riven him by Mr. Rice and Patrick replied ho would use the mon ey as Mr. Rice had named him as re siduary le?Hte because of his per sonal re.jurd for him. Bulgarian Minister of Instruction Killed by a Macedonian. Sofia, Bulgaria, Feb. 7. M. Kamt eliefi. the minister of public instruc tion, was assassinated in his study by a Macedonian who pretended he want ed to present a petition. The assassin subsequently commit ted suicide by shooting himself. M. Kamtchc fl's assassin, who had been a student at the university of Sofia, was apixiintcd to a professor ship in a provincial town. The full text of the treaty between the United States and Denmark for the cession of the Danish West Indian islands was made public yesterday. The purchase price is given as 5, 000,000. The treaty specifies that Denmark agrees to cede to the United Slates immediately upon the exchange of ratifications of the convention the Islands of St. Thomas. St. John and SL Croix in the West Indies, with the adjacent Islands and rocks, compris ing in said cession all title and claims of title to the territories In and about said islands over which the crown of Denmark now exercises, asserts or claims jurisdiction. The Southern Pacific management proposes to build a railway bridge across the Great Salt Lake which will be twenty-three miles long, twelve miles of which will be In deep water, necessitating Immense steel trestles; the rest in shallow water.
