Jury Commissioner GEORGE W. DUNKLE. FROM THE STATE CaPITOL. Harkisburo, April 10, 1899. Ten days more of legislative werk and the present sessioa ends. That ten days will bo crowded with work each morning noon and night, yet many bills, some good, some bad, will fall by the way side for lack of time. The question of revenue has been of as much importance as the question of U. S. Senator. The Ways and Means committee of the House, how ever, has found the means and ways out of the trouble and it all remains with the Senate row to concur. What they will do with the revenue bills sent the in is yet a question. On the passage of these bills depends the financial help that the many charities ef the Stale w ll got. The Ileuse has faithfully tried to keep the State from any additional indebtedness while at the same time assisting all worthy charities as far as pos sible under the circumstances. Notwit. standing all the hue and cry raised by the Wanamaker papers the $11,000,000 for public schools is in the general appro priation bill, just as the Forest Repub lican said it would be. No one here sorieusly thought it would be otherwise. The idea, however, gave an opportunity for some papers and some members to pose as defenders, etc., of the public schools. The Goveraer has been very much misquoted on this subject. His position was aad is simply that if we give the 811,000,000 we must have the revenue to pay it with. When this school question was up in the House, Capt. Skinner, member from Fulton, made the remark that in his county school teachers could get boarding far $5.00 per month. Instantly Slater oi Philadelphia, who weighs 360 ponnds.got up and asked Skinner "if he (Slater) could get boarding in Fulton county at $5.00 per month." This brought down tho house, but Skinner got even by saying, "No, he could not, for he (Skinner) had seen the hotel pre prietor where Slater boards shedding floods of tears as he witnessed Slater eat ing at the price of $10.00 per week." The bribery investigation jogs aloag the same old way. Statements are made ct offers all the war from fifty dollars up to five thousand for votes. The idea of a fellow posing as a moral hero in refusing fifty dellars as the price of his boner is rather ridiculous, while the Ave thousand dollar affair raises the doubt ef its genuineness, .Then, again, we have the offers of from 1 place on committee to postmaster at 1 good salary. This puts the parties ii about the same shape. The curious part of the whole affair is that in the great ma loritv of cases the men who made the oilers could not have given anything, How much of this was done just as sort of "feelers" in order that the blundering detective force ia pay of the"gang"mlgbt strike a victim and thus poesibly claim a share of the big reward, is not definitely known. The trend of the investigation has been to cateh a Quayite. The result had been that but one Quay man, and he very indirectly, has even been ap proached ; they are not of the approach able kind. Yet it is hardly fair to call them Quayites, for the truth is that the stand where they do from principle, They are standing by the party nominee, Senator Quay has not tried t deliver these votes to anyone else, and will net try, but I say what I know to be true. that he could not if he wanted to. The regulars are not taking orders from any man. On the other hand a steering com naitteeofthe insurgents every morning tolls the insurgents for whom they are to vote that day, and yet they bowl about the "machine and its boss." No one knows what the anti-Quay papers will predict this week, but one thing is cer tain, the U. S. Senator will be M.S. Quay or a man the regulars select, and it's just as likely to be M. 8. Q. as any other man There has been much talk of Senator Magee's future action. I do not believe that he will, after moving to make Quay' nemination unanimous, break from the regulars. But if he did be conld not take enough to dictate a nominee or fix an election. My judgment is that no change will be made until after Quay's trial. If acquit ed, aad the majority opinion is that he will be, he will be elected with votes to spare. It looks now as if his enemies feared the trial more than Quay does. I may teil some things that the enemy thought was not known. When it is all over and the real history written, the good people ol this State, regardless of party or faction, will be surprised and in dignant at tbe jobbery and meanness of motive to say nothing of worse things tba were behind it all. I cannot close this brief letter without a Just tribute to our no:ghbor, Senator Cumings. In all that stands fur integri ty and manliness personally, and all that which is best for his district and the com monwealth, ths Senator from tho XLVIII district stands pro-eminent. He is genial, generous and fair. He is an orator, states man and gentleman, and "here's long lite and happiness to him." s. s. T. April's snow storms threaten to be as numerous as tbe Jeffersonian dinners. Under Democratic rulo who would have had tho hardihood to propose so much as a $1 dinner even T What a wide divergence from tho soup house idea. It is only uoder Republican prosperity that Democrats can discuss Jetfersonian dinners at $10 or even $1 a plate. Help yourselves, gentlemen, Thore's plenty for all. Tho Republicans of Forest County held their primaries last Saturday, and yester day afternoon the return judges assem bled at the court house for the purpose of canvassing the vote and declaring the result. The election throughout tho county, though spirited, was conducted with an entire absence of "bad blood" nf any kit d, the several candidates having it exclusively to themselves, and tbe re sult is the clear and unhampered expres sion of the Republican votersj Never in the history or the county lias a canvass been freer from outside influences, and never has the party registered its docree with less bias or bitterness. The result is the namin; of ticket which every loyal Republican can support with a good heart. The candidates placed in nomina tion are all firm, steadfast Republicans, and men thoroughly qualified for the places fcr which they have been nomina ted. Tho Convention was entirely free from auything approaching bitterness or ill feeling. The resolutions adopted planted the party of the county squarely on the platform of the National aud State administrations, and firmly uphold the broad principles upon which the Repub licans havo for years gone before the peo ple and won. THE CONVENTION. Chairman Coon called the convention to order promptly at 2 p. 111., aud named T. Dale and Leon Watson as Secretar ies. The returns were haudod in aud computed with tho following results : For Associate Judge, R. Bruce Craw ford of Tionesta. Prothonotary, John II. Robertson, the present efficient incumbent. As will be observed by the official ta ble there were no great majorities, the suc cessful candidates having no walkaway for any of tho offices tor which there was a contest. Tbe vote was a large oue con sidering the time of year and tbe in clemency of the weather, the highest be ing 1221 as shown in tbe footing for asso ciate judge. After th result had been ofllcially de clared, tbe convention proceeded to the election of a Chairman of tbe County Committee for the ensuing year. Sheriff F. P. Walkor and Harry Maze were named, the vote resulting in the choice of Mr. Walker. After thanalng the con vention for the compliment bestowed and a few speeches from tbe successful as well as the defeated candidates, including a few remarks by the retiring chairman and 'Snuire Randall, the convention ad journal In the best of humor. RESOLUTIONS. The Republicans of Forest county in convention assembled hereby re-alTirm tbeir adherence to the principles of their party adopted by tho St. Louis conven tion. We hereby endorse the administration of President McKinley and his .able and patriotic efforts in bringing to a success ful termination the war with Spain, and the policy adopted in Cuba, Perto Rico an. the Philippines, and his untiring ef forts to bring to a successful termination all questions relating to the new territory acquired by the treaty of Paris. We bail with delight the return of prosperity brought about through the wise policy of the Republican party by the re-enactment of wise tariff laws, (hereby giving employment to labor, ad vancing tbe wages of thousands of our mechanics and laboring men, and put ting in motion all the factories and mills of our country, advancing the price of lumber and iron, and all other products, including; all agricultural preduc's, and commend this policy to the citizens of our country in contrast with the ruinous policy of the late Democratic administra tion of free trade, low wages and busi ness depression. We hereby endorse the administration of Governor W. A. Stone and his earnest efforts to keep the appropriations within tbe revenues of the State and his deter mination to provide for the present de ficiency. We are unanimously opposed to any departure from the well established rule of the Republican early, that of majority rule, and view with alarm the disposi tion of some of its prominent members to denart from this time-nonoreu pnnei pie, We hereby unanimously endorse ths ticket placed in nomination by tho Re publicans of Forest county and pledgo to it our united aud warm support The death of Justice Stephen J. Tun Quay trials were bt-gun before Jude Biddle in the Philadelphia courts on Monday of this week. Two hours were spent in selecting a jnrv, and but one witness was called nn Monday. It is thought the trial will last all week. As seen from a Democratic standpoint, the situation is thus described by the Clarion Jucksonian: "However bitter the knowledge may be the (act that Quay seems to be winning in nearly ull of the counties where a test of strength has been made which will tend naturally to encourage his followers for they can rea sonably conclude thr.t their course is backed by party sentiment. If the oppo site were true; if ho bad been losing in majority of the counties where a contest has been made, it would not be surpris' ing shoald he run up tho white flag; but under the circumstances as they appear it Is reasonable to conclude that the dead lock will continue and thai this tension will not see the election of a United : States Senator."
