When Sherman bombarded Atlanta for forty days aud fired hundreds of shells into tho city, comparatively few citizens were killed. The fortifi cations of the city were common earthworks of red clay, and it is said they were about as good after the siege as they were before the first gun was fired. The shot and shell poured into these banks of dirt seemed to make them bigger and more inde structible. The first shell fell in At lanta July 20, 13(34, aud killed a little child. During the first few days the shells terrified the people, but after a week or so even the women became accustomed to them. A number bf . casualties followed, one shell explod ing in a funeral procession, scatter ing four coffins and dispersing the mourners; another burst in the market-house, but did not injure any of the thirty people present. During the bombardment hundreds of stores kept open all the time, the newspapers came out as usual, ar.d the streets were crowded with people; yet in the entire six weeks there were less than one hundred persons killed in the city. Women who have suffered severely and been relieved of their ills by Mrs. Pinkham's advice and medicine are constantly urging publication of their statements for the benefit of other wo men. Here are two Buch letters: Mrs. Lizzie Beverly, 258 Merrimao St., Lowell, Mass., writes: " It affords me great pleasure to tell -all suffering women of the benefit I have received from taking Lydia E. Pink ham's Vegetable Compound. I can hard ly find words to express my gratitude for what she has dono for mc. My trouble was ulceration of the womb. I was un der the doctor's care. Mrs. Pinkham's medicine saved my life, and I would recommend it to all suffering women." Mrs. Amos Trombleay, Ellenburgh Ctr., N. I was al so troubled with falling of the womb. I could not cat, had faint spells as often as ten times a day. One day a lady came to see me and told me of the benefit she had derived from taking Lydia E. Pinkham's medicine, and ad vised me to try it. " We always like to have tho clover cut as soon at least as most of tho heads are iu blossom, without waitiug to have some begin to brown. The hay will dry away more if cut as early as this, but the secou'd crop comes for ward so rapidly that its value more than makes up what was lost iu the first crop. We believe this rapid second grow th is iu part due to the manuring which every clover field gets alter its crop is cut from the wasted clover leaves which are broken off in curing and fall to the ground. These clover leaves are very rich, and as they dry their fertilizing value is washed out of them by the first rains. Who ever secured a clover crop with out getting it more or less wet? Some times after a heavy raiu the heaps ot clover hay will be completely wet through, saturating the soil beneath, aud especially on the edges of the heaps, where most of the rain had run off. Often, while the clover will be smothered where these heaps stood on all the border round, there will be a growth of clove so green and vigorous that it shows as plainly as would a heap of the best stable manure exposed to like conditions. Enemies of Young Chtckene. The two great difficulties iu the way of raising chickens on a farm, lice and hawks, are easily managed. For the first, dust the hen, while sitting, with insect powder, and after the chickens are a few days old, wet a piece of cloth or paper iu kerosene and squeeze it dry, then rub it into the hen's feath ers, especially under the wiugs. If this is attended to once a week there will be no trouble from lice. The safest plan if hawks are trouble some is to make a covered run for the chickeus. Construct a frame of boards about fifteen inches high and any de sired size aud cover it with wire net ting. Over one corner lay a wide board as a protection from raius, also to furnish shade on a hot day. If skunks trouble, Jay boards on the ground around the frame. This run should be moved every few days to give a fresh place, and if it is on grass, gravel must be thrown in or the turf broken so that the chickens can get it for themselves. I once put a fiue lot of Plymouth rocks on a grass plot and moved the frame every day, to give them fresh grass. In spite of the best possible care they all died and it was some time before I found that the trouble was a lack of gravel. If the hen is with the chickeus she will often dig through the grass and get gravel in that way. W. D. Miller, iu Americau Agriculturist. Feeding Calves to Make Good Cows. There is considerable more in the proper bringing up of a calf than most dairymen are willing to admit. It is reasonable to snppose that every owner of a cow of good breed is anxious to got from her the greatest return at the smallest outlay, aud as the months of calfhood are few it cer tainly pays to feed the calf carefully in order to obtain the desired result vhen she reaches maturity. The cow that converts the greatest quantity of coarse, cheap forage of the farm into rich milk is the cow that is profitable. Ia order to accomplish this she must have among other things stomach capacity and powerful diges tive orgaus, tthioh are obtainable ouly by the greatest care in feeding during her calfhood days. Keep the calf growing so that the growth of bono will greatly exceed that of flesh. Feed plenty of skim milk, roots aud grass with some bran, crushed oots or oil meal, but in order to get the latter dainties she must be made to eat a lot of coarse fodder or hay. In other words, make the calf eat a good deal in order to obtaiu a little, thus enlarging the capacity and strengthen ing the digestive organs. Avoid all concentrated foods, have the calves come in not earlier than two years old, and the chances are nine out of teu you will have a profitable dairy cow and not a duiuty one. Atlanta Jour nal. Curing For Tomato Mania. The method of tying tomato platits to poles is not wholly a new one, but it is a valuable one. Tho plants being stocky to start with, P'Oot, excellent results will accrue. Iu the first place, it is a good plau to set iu one long row if only a few are to be grown; but if a great many they should bo set about two feet apart in the rows, aud the rows made three feet apart. This gives the plants room to grow, and also gives room for sunlight and air to reach to the inner rows. Before the plants are set poles should be Sot very firmly in the ground. These should be some eight or niue feet above the ground. It does not seem as though even an aspiring tomato would reach that height, but if trained to it they will do so, aud the so-called climbing tomatoes are likely not differeut from the ordinary ones, only from the fact of their training. Having set the poles, the plants should bo put at the base of them. Now, giveu a stocky plant at the outset, there will be brauches enough upou it, so that it will need pruning ouce a week auy way, to keep it iu climbing order. Wheu a plaut is well started iu its new location it will send out new shoots above each leaf, aud these new shoots must all be kept piuched out. If these are left they w ill grow to be as large as the main stalk, aud will take a great deal of strength away from it. Keep the maiu stalks tied to the stake or pole with strips of soft muslin or something of the sort a string is liable to cut them. Keep the laterals piuched off, and you w ill find your tomato plauts bcariug in good season, aud fruit far superior to that which would be borno if the plants were left to themselves practi cally, or allowed to grow in the usual bush form. New York Tribune. Poultry Uousra on the Farm. In buildiug a houso for your Poul try place it on a high, dry snot aud have it somewhat sheltered from the cold winter wiuds if possible; have the frout of the buudiug to the south and be sure there are plenty of wiu dows iu it. It is best not to have it connected with the stables, as the fumes from them are more or less in jurious to poultry; and if they, through neglect, become lousy, tho cattle and horses will be almost sure to be affected. As poultry can be kept more cheaply wheu running at large than when con fined, it would be better to pnt the chicken house at some distance from your own dwelling, so that they will not litter up the stoop or doorstep. It tuey have good quarters they wilj not be likely to bother much if table scraps and food are not thrown out ol he back door to attract them. To. save all risk a light fence of lath or wire netting may be built about the dwelling. When you have your buildinsrs and breeding stock you are ready to begin business. Do not expect eggs too soon if the fowls have just been Kjught, as moving usually disturbs them, and it takes some time to bo come accustomed to their new quar ters. If your building does not con tain arrangements for separating the sitting hens from the others, take pains when a hen js set to fasten her in with laths so that the others cannot disturb her, and when you let the sit ting hen off to feed be sure that all others are shut out of the house or some may enter the nest to lay, and the "sitter" on returning make such a row that the eggs be broken or she go on another nest, and when the lay ing hen comes off the eggs become cold. Where several hens are set in a row of nests all alike, some advocate painting them different colors to as sist the hens in finding their own nests and they assure us they have much less trouble with hens getting on their neighbors' nests than when there is nothing to tell the nests apart. Sitting hens should be allowed to come off every day, but do not disturb them if they do not soein inclined to leave their nests. Some hens will not feed oftener than once in three days. Have plenty of grain and fresh water at hand. Hippopotamus Trait, The last hippopotamus has been slaughtered in Natal. All the larger and more curious creatures are disnp peariug so fast that this will be a mono tonous world, at auy rate for natur alists, iu another century. Not so long ago the hippopotamus haunted the rivers of Cape Colony and Natal, and "lake-cow bacon," as the salted layer of fat underlying the hide is called, was a favorite dish, but now this huge creature has disappeared from both countries. The hunter has beeu its enemy for many a century, but the rifle is a far more deadly weapon than the assegai. The animal has an appetite proportionate to its bulk, and can accommodate a good deal of vegetable produce. Besides this, it is a wasteful feeder, tearing down aud trampling up much more than it consumes, and it prefers cul tivated plants to wild vegetation. That has proved its doom in Natal. One herd was left at Seacow Lake, a coast lagoon near Durban, and was protected by the government. It con sisted of parents aud a family of five. Uufortuuately, these, like young peo plo all the world over, loved "sweet ies," aud made nocturnal raids on the neighboring sugar-cane plantations. The owners - petitioned the govern ment, a warraut of execution wat granted, aud the parental bull, wht must have been nearly fifty years old, was the Inst to full, and will hence forth be ouly au "exhibit" in the Dur ban Museum.
