Tiik report of State Treasurer Hay wood for the mouth ending Aug. 31 show a big balance of almost $5,000, 000. With reviving business in ev ery direction this balance ia not like ly to fall much below these 6gures except when heavy payments are made on account of the school appro priation. Tocaituke the South American market is an old ambition of Uuited States traders, but they have "eprag god their own wheel" for the present by their import duties ou wool. Bradford, Eng., Observer. Hardly bo. If we can supply South America with the goods she needs, of good quality and at satisfactory prices, we will get the trade. Other wise not. The question of our buy ing their wool has oothiog to do with their making purchses on the most favorable terms. How is it that the South Americana are neglecting the -- tor the German ,.'fuauufact urersP" There was bloody work in one of the mioiog districts of Luzerne couu-7-test Friday. Twenty-one Hun garian miners were shot down and are dead, and nearly double that number are more or less seriously wounded, as a result of a volley fired by the Sheriff's deputies. The trouble occurred at Lattimer, near Hazelton, when the miners were de termined to prevent other miners from working, and were marching in a body to the mine to carry out their threats. The Sheriff having learned of their inteuded move had upward of 70 armed deputies on the ground, and according to his version of the affair, had twice read the proclama tion demanding the peace. A num ber of the miners rushed at bim, struck hiui, and were tramping him when he gave the order to fire, with thf result indicated. Three thous and National Guardsmen are now on the ground, and at last Accounts all was quiet, though the excitement has been very great in that region since the awful occurrence. The resignations of General Fraok Reeder, Secretary of the Common wealth, and Hon. John P. Elkin Deputy Attorney General, from thi cabinet of Governor Hastings are the political events of the past week. The resignations were requested by their respective chiefs, the Governor und Attorney General McCormick. Var lous causes have been assigned for this flareup in the Governor's official family, but the one which receives raoai credence in this neck o woods is that which ascribes factional poli tics as the real reason, and the loyalty ot the two ex-officials to Senator Quay, it is believed, has cost them their positions. Of course this is de nied ia certain quarters, but the dis 1 . ciaimer would have been received with greater sincerity had it not been quickly followed by the appointment of David Martin of Philadelphia as the successor of General Iloeder. Oo this point the latter gentleman's version of the disagreement that led up to his resignation, just published, gives much light that makes inter esting reading. There seems to be somewhat of a hitch on the adoption of plans for the new State Capitol at Harrisburg, and from present appearances the legisla lure ol 18U will not occupy new quarters. It seems the Governor and the balance of the Commission can not just agree ou plans, noue ot which are withic the limit of $555,000, and so the other day four of the Commis sioners voted to reiect all. This riled the Governor, and he now threatens to resign his membership of the Commission. Wbtu the bill was passed for lliu new Capitol uol one member iu leu believed that a re spectable buildiug could be erected for the money, but the Governor was sure that it could be dune and was ready to assume ihe responsibility for doing it. Under these circumstances it would seem the Commission is clearly justified in rejecting all plaus which do not come withiu the 550, 000 mark aud letting the resposibil ity rest where it belongs. If it has the authority to exceed that figure 11,000 why has it not the autority to go 110,000 higher, or a million, if you please r In other words, if the limit is once brokeo, where will the expeuse stop? Another year has rolled around since the last assembly of the Veteran of For est County and vicinity, at Marienville. Time has wrought gome changes. Some who met with ua then we miss to-day. Clapp has removed from among us, one of our most cher ished and beloved members a bright light, who by his zeal in the cause of freedom, and by long and intimate asso ciation with us as our friend, was en doared to us by many ties of affection aud love. Resolved; That by the demise of John Rhodes and 1). G. To flic Reading People ol Tloiirstn. And especially to parents who have children attending tho public schools. I have Just received from tho publishers a sample of tlio Universal Dictionary of the English Language, a description of which Is given below. Tho New Universal Dictionary, a new and original work, presenting for con venient reference the orthography, pro nunciation, meaning, use, oriuin and de velopment ol every word in tho English language, together with condensed ex planations of fifty thousand important subjects and an exhaustive encyclopedia of all the arts and sciences profusely il lustrated, contains 5, ft0 quarto pages of three columns each. It is in lour sub stantially bound quarto volnmns In half Morocco, containing full and accurate in formation in ell tho varied domains of human knowledge, besides being a dic tionary of words tho most complete yet published, covering every era and stand ard author in tho language and literature of the two English-speaking nationali ties. You may read any of theso four splendid volumes by the hour, with en joyment, mental recreation and Intellec tual up-building. It is impossible for the studious mind to ask a question for self enlighteninont that the Universal Diction ary will not answer. On art, scienco and great modern movements and inventions tho information is comploto, compactly put together for easy remembrance, and strictly up to the year 1W7 in all the new developments of modern progress. The kinetoscopo, aeroplane, and all such new phases of applied science tho latest In electricity, photograph and motor mech anism j together with descriptive defini tions of all important words iu the Eng lish languauo instead of the. old fashioned mere word-book style, of uns'nluttantial repetitions of synonymous words) can be read about here dhy after day, as one would go through a carefully selected li brary of universal information. The ad vantage over tho library in this case, is that all you have to do isscloct your topic and turn to the proper alphabetical se quence. Tho following testimonials will speak for themselves. Hon. Franklin J. Diekman, ex-Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the State of Ohio, says: "I have carefully exam ined the Universal Dictionary, and I take great pleasure in bearing testimony to its rare merits. In all the essential charac teristics of a complete dictionary, and as a book of reference on questions other than those of language, the gene ral read er will find comprehensive and exact in formation which ho will look for in vain in Webster's International, Worcester's Unabridged or tho Century Dictionary." Rev. Charles H. Parkhurst, D. 1)., ihe celebrated divine and reformer, of New York, says: "The Universal Dictionary is a library condensed into four volumes; a ton of diffusiveness reduced to forty pounds of quintessence and, withal, as delicate in detail as it is comprehensive in contents. Ex-Judize Noah Davis, the eminent jurist and scholar, says : "I have given considerable examination to your Uni versal Dictionary, with a view, so far as practicable, to determine its value as a work of use to the publio generally, and to persons who, like myself, have a pro fessional interest in the question. I have become satisfied that lor general use it has no superior in auy of the qualities that make up a good dictionary. To these qualities it adds a fund of oncyclo- Eaedio knowledge which I have never efore seen In such a work, and which enables tho student to trace the deriva tion of words ind belr signification and use, with great ease and perlect confi dence. It is, in my opinion, also of great professional value'to clergymen, physi cians and lawyers in developing the phil osophy of words and their uses and de rivation as airecling questions peculiar to their respective professions. Ifeol at lib erty, therefore, to give tho work my hearty commendation." I will deliver this great work of educa tion to any home in Tionesta on payment of $1.00, balance payable 25 cents a' week. Anvone wishing to examine this work of education can call at Hotel Agnew af ter Thursday of this week. Jons A. Nou. Small precautions ofton prevent groat mischiefs.
