K. tOXYEMlON Held In llio PresbTtprlnn Church at 1 1lls Place Last Friday a Suc cessful Affair. The convetitinn of the local union of the Young People's Society of Christian Endeavor, which was held a this place last Friday afternoon aod evening was considered one of the most ruccesafui ever held by the society iu this locality. There was a very large attendance of ileleiiatcs. The home society expected a very arge attendance of delegates hut the crowds that came so far exceeded all expectations that for a time it seemed that a large number would have to go hungry if they a'.l depended on getting their supper at the society rooms iu the church. I3ut our young people ate equal to any emergency and it was but a short tune until they had euough "grub" on baud to feed the large assemblage of delegates and other visitors. It is estimated llml over 400 people were fed aud that is a pretty good showing for a town of this size, and judiug from the reports of papers in neighboring towns which seDt delegates everyone was satisfied with the manner in which they were entertained. This union has had a wonderful growth in its numbers and onuence since its organization iu 181)2. It is at present composed of 20 societies from Oil City, Titusville, l" ranklin, lioliesta, I'leasantville. Utica, Siverly aud Endeavor, and ac cording to the report given by the secretary Friday evening, has a membership of about 1,000. Three conventions a year are held by this union. A new departure has recently been made in the manner of conducting the meetings by the additiou of an afternoon meeting, at which opeu par- larneut aud discussions are introduc ed and indulged in an informal way by delegates and representatives of the various societies. The plan adopt ed has proven a great success. I'he church at Tionesta, seating GOO, whs well tilled Friday afternoon to listen to and take part iu the discussion on the "Lookout Committee and Its Work." The Rev. S. A. Cornelius. f Oil City, conducted the meeting and a number of papers aud short ad dresses were given by delegates from the ditlerent societies of the union. A uuior exercise was also given, consiiit ne of a "responsive exercise," eayines of Christ, and a musical drill, follow ed by appropriate papers by Mrs. Wm. bmearbaugh, of Tionesta, aud Mrs. V. H. Wise, of Oil City. I he evening meeting was attended by about 800 people and the roomy eclifiBe was packed almost to snffi ca tion. The Rev. W. Y. Chapman, of Franklin made the address of the evening; subject: ''The Ultimate Aim of Christian Endeavo-." This address was eloquently rendered and well received by the large audience. Officers for the coming year were elected as follows : T. E. Armstrong, TioDesla, presi dent; George Edgett, Titusville, vice president ; R. i, bmall, Oil City, secretary; W. E. Williams, Franklin, treasurer; R iu. Small was elected delegate to the international conven tion, to be held in Sao Fraooisco, Cel., next July. 1 he next local ronven tion will be held at Oil City. We have frequently been amused at people who do not subscribe for thoir homo paper being so brash as to criticise some of its utterances. What hrsiness of thoirs is it what the paper says; they don't help maintain it. Kx. At a meeting of the Democratic County Committee held In the Sheriffs office last evening R. M. Herman of this placo was elected chairman, and J. C. Miller of Kellettvillo as a delegate to tho Stato convention. Saturday, May 8th, was the date chosen for holding the pri maries. During a sermon being delivered by Rev. John Hnlchins in Utica county, Ten n., recently be made use of these words: "The Lord directed the bullet that killed Abraham Lincoln." The congregation became furious and the minister found it necossary to take to the mountains. Clothing! Well, If that is what you want just call on L. J. It. -This Is ono ot the largest terms of court that Forest county has ever knowu and there are so many people in town that it is almost impossible to secure sleeping apartments for them. Wo would like to mention all of the vicinity people who are in town, but we would have to enlarge the paper if we did. I. E. Dean, of this place has a well preserved copy of tiie Ulster county, N. While the date of the paper is Jan. 4, 1H00, it contains foreign, news dated as far back as Oct. 9, of the previous year, which shows con siderable of a discrepancy between tho telegraphic service ol that day and the present.
