For salo at Bovard's, Horrifying Storms Cause Great Loss of Life. Tho most torrlflo cyclone, whirlwind or hurricane that this country has ever known swept through parts of Illinois, Indinnn, Kentucky, Tennessee and other Southern States last Thursday evening, destroying hundreds of lives, nnd doing untold damage to property of all kinds that lay In Us track. The city of Ixmls vllle and suburban towns suffered the greatest losses lioth in lifo and property, somo of the smaller places being reported almost wiped out of existence. In Louis ville the latest estimates place the number of killed between 2o0 and 300, with three times thnt many Injured. Ono account says that between 8 and 9 o'clock the tor nado struck Louisville from the South west, leaving death and destruction every where. Outsido of the cloarly defined limits tho citizens knew only of tho heavy ruin accompanied by the high winds. Soon came the alarm of fire from a dozen differ ent stations and the horrors ol the calami ty began to dawn on tho people Great stone warehouses, halls of amusement, railroad stations and dwelling houses all went down before the mighty powers of the air. The storm soon passed on, the clouds scatterod and tho moon cast Its light over the sorely-strlckoii city. Rcliof parties were soon organized, and the whole force 6r . 4Dartmont was nt work. No definite slrtib.. . an bo made of the loss of life, but largo. Enough Is known to show that Loulsvlllo has been visited by a most appalling calamity. Tiie wrocked portion of tho city lies between Eighteenth, Broadway, Seventh nnd Main streets, the destroying elomcnts passing diagonally across tho section, which is probably a milo square. At least two hundred houses nre in ruins. Probably the greatest loss of lifo occurred at Falls City Hall, which was In the center of th tornado. In tho lower rooms of tho hull wero 50 or 75 children, with tholr mothers and other relatives, taking dancing lessons. Thero wore at least 125 persons on the lower floor nnd 75 more nttonding a lodge meeting on tho upper floor when tho tor riblo wind swooped down upon tho build ings. The entire structuro in less than fivo minutes was a shapeless mass of brick and mortar, burying dozens of helploss victims. NEWSY NOTES. A Scotch-Irish convention is to be held In Pittsburg in May. A sharper with a new scheme Is travel ing through somo of the neighboring counties and may also striko this section. He has an improved plowshare which he loans to some influential farmer with the provision that if It proves satisiuctory ho will recommend it to his neighbors and if at the end of the season he does not wish to keep it, he is to ship It to any address given him. If tho unsuspecting farmer agrees to do this, the sharper draws up uu article of agreement. This article is writ ten with a peculiarly constructed fountain pen, there being two compartments in the holder, which contains two kinds of Ink, oue of which will fado, while the other will remain. With tho former ho writes the articlo, aud chunking the pen ho bunds it to tho farmer, who signs his name with the latter kind. The result is that the words of tho article soon fade uud tho sharper has a piece of white paper with the farmer's name thereon, and cau make it into a note of uny denomination at his leisure.
