Be sure you get the genuine. A Swing Around the Circle ' Your tramp found your other older tramp, Geo. Haslet, at Sheffield, just returned from the wonderland of Northern New York aud full of an en thusiastic regard for its natural beau ties and unbounded privileges of meet ing nature in hei wildly romantic and gloriously sublime aspects. New houses are being built at Bronkston, and the tannery business is moving right along. Bark peeling, piling and hauling is tha foremost business in tbe woods at present ; that is it seems to be as you ride along on the train andjisten to the conversa tion of the woods workers; but sit down in the shade on a log to breathe in inspiration viewing the scenery af forded by the grand green clad bills and beautifully winding valleys half hidden low down at their feet and in the section of a minute equal to a quadrant thereof you'll be willing to be persuaded tbat the green wood hath no industry equal to that of keeping on even terms with a small insect ety mologically designated "tbe punkie." Once in a while an accident occurs in the "bark woods." Near Frosts some time ago one man was struck over the head with a limb and knock ed senseless for some time, but soon recovered. Another bad bis leg cut severely. Two men were cutting down a tree one a left handed chopper, the other a right handed. Both stood on the same side of tbe tree. When the tree was nearly down, one man's ax caught on a twig or limb and being turned from its course entered the other man's leg more than half way up from the knee cutting slantingly up ward reaching as deep as the bone. Indications point to a more active trade in lumber along the line of the little road up iu Howe and Jenks and to a trifle better prices or seems to. A large amount of hemlock shingles ia sawed up in those woods. - At Frosts' Mr. Frosts' little son burned his feet quite bad a few days since. He had gone off playing by himself it seems, and bad wandered to where there was a fire in a pile of sawdust. Tramping in the sawdust he broke through to where it was burning underneath. He pulled him self out and started for tbe house which ho had almost reached when discovered. The borne of Mr. Black, school teacher at Frosts' was made glad the early part of last week by the advent of a fine baby girl. Gilfoyle has a fine gas well. Part of the bouses there at the mill and at the station are lighted and heated by the gas. The article is of a superior quality. Col. Amsler is putting up a store building at Marienville located near ly south of the Center House some distance. Tbe wall is built and the superstructure will soon arise. Dr. Towler is kept quite busy. Tbe Dr's beat extends over a large extent of territory and grows nj lese. Grandmother Mercilliott who bas been quite low is improving in health we are glad to learn and note. Tramp. Kellettville Items. Kellettville is a popular resort for Sunday visitors from neighboring towns. Messsrs. Butler & Caldwell were in town last evening. One of Lee Davis' children ia quite ill. Rev. D. B. Toby occupied the F. M. pulpit yesterday by invitation. Wm. Richards and Rev. llogue were in Kellettville last week ; they located a well while here and expect to have tbe rig hauled this week. This well will be close to the tannery on the Cole tract. Archie Poffenberger spent the Sab bath at home. Archie is teaming at Russell's Mills; be reports business moving along there with the energy usual with the Messrs. Russell. Ed. Morgan has returned from La cy s Mills, iiesides being the boss teamster, Ld. is quite a nsbermun ; but, as the season will soon be out, we advise him to hurry and catch bis rainnie before it is too late. Probably tbe first dance that ever took place in a tanuery building, oc curred here last Friday evening. The second story was used, and it afforded sufficient room for all to dance who cared to; refreshments were serred and every one seemed bappy; the married men doubly so, but tbat can be accounted for as tbey bad to enjoy it for themselves and absent wives also. Ezekiel. June 28. i Stewarts Run Notes. We hnve had quite a spell of weath er, especially wet. Tbe farmers are busy putting in their buckwheat. Mrs. D. F. Copeland and daughter Myrta were visiting relatives on the Run last Sabbath. Mr. W. C. Bromley killed a large rattlesnake on his way home from Sa'bbath School last Sabbath. Mr. W. Y. Siggins, of Tiouesta, paid James Mclntyre's strawberry field a very pleasant visit one day last week. Jim says he would not care so much if Billy had only left him enough for a short-cake. Work on Mr. Handy's cellar is progressing finely. Preaching and Sabbath school at the Wealeyan church every Sabbath. We understand they have a nice Sab bath School and are glad to bear it. June 29. G. A. R. Judge Brown on License. Considering the action taken on the license question in this county at tbe last term of court, all parties will doubtless be interested in the disposi tion of the matter in Warren county last week. In Warren borough six were granted, in Clarendon six, Shef field three, and in other sections of the county four were granted, making nineteen in all, out of fifty-seven ap plications. Judge Brown delivered a lengthy opinion, and from the Tidioute News we take tbe following synopsis: "In brief it is founded upon tbe act of 1867, which makes it necessary for the applicant to show that a 'license to sell liquor' is necessary, and not a 'license to keep hotel, inB or tavern.' In determining this necessity the prop er method was to hear petitions and remonstrances from tha residents of the ward, borough or township in which license was applied for. "We must look principally to the opinion ot the voters ot the locality in determining the necessity for the pro posed license, but (and we here adopt the language or the able judge of tbe t ourtn district) 'we are not bound by the result of a simple count of the names of tbe voters. We may con sider also their character, their busi ness relations, their local prominence, and such other circumstances as may be seen to give value to the opinions expressed by them and enable us to determine the sentiment of the bor ough or township.' And we avail our selves of tbe words of the same judgo : VV e nave always received respect fully and taken into account the re monstrance of adult women. They do not vote, it is true, and we do not attempt to fix the formula by which the weight of their remonstrances may be calculated with exactness, but we never have, and we never shall, shut our ears to tbe cries of tbe wives and mothers who ask to be beard on this question. Tbey are the greatest suf ferers from tbe consequences of intern' perance, they have the greatest inter est in the subject, and they have no other method of striking at tbe traffic.' "What we havo said indicates our convictions of the duty imposed on us by the laws of the commonwealth. Aided by any knowledge either of the judges may have as to applicants and localities, we shall try to dispose of eacn one ot tbe pending applications . i S i . upon us nierus. uur nuty is a per plexing one. The evidence on which we must act is in many instances vague or conflicting. Tbat we shall make mistakes is probable. That the decisions we shall render will not meet the approval of all is certain. If we could assent to the proposition main tained by some very able judges, that the necessity of the particular house for the entertainment of strangers and travelers, together with the other pre requisites, being shown, the court ia bound to grant a license, our duty would be an easy one. But we cannot so assert. In tbe absence of express legislative enactment or positive de cision of tbe court of last resort, we are not ablo to conclude tbat it is in deed the law that one man who bap- pens to own or occupy a bouse so sit uated and equipped as to be conven ient or necessary for feeding and lodg ing the wayfarer, may demand as a right, and in the face of an overwhelm ing adverse popular sentiment, that the court shall commission him to thrust the business of selling intoxi cating drinks upon an unwilling com munity. "While we have great respect for tbe opinion of the judges from whom we differ we must follow our own con victions of duty, aud this we do when we hold that the necessity of a license to sell intoxicating drinks is to be determined, in great part, by tbe sen timent of the locality as expressed iu tbe petitions and remonstrances pre sented to tbe court." Tbe News adJs : "Logically follow ing out tbe Judge's opinion remon strances against tho granting of li censes in Warren and Clarendon must have been very light, both as regards tho character aud business relations of tho signers."
