Congressman White will please accept our thanks for valuable public documents received. Mr John Carr of Lottsville,- Ta., paid hi brother in-law, Mr. F. R. Larson, a visit during the week. The days are growing perceptibly longer. And "as the day lengthens the cold strengthens," says an old saw. Although the river has beeo froz en over for over a' week, it is hardly safe, as yet, for learns to cross on the ice. II. J. Hopkins & Co. have some thing new to say this week in their "ad." Read it and then go and see them. The M. E. Church has been beau tified with new stained glass windows, adding much to the cheerfulness of the interior, Born To Mr. and Mrs, Andrew Cart, a daughter; and to Mr. and Mrs. John Charlson, a daughter, since our last issue. Oil Cily is to have a Crematory. It will be the only one west of the Al legheoy mountains, and the only one in the world using natural gas. Charlie Hioton moved into bis new house a short time ago. Although not yet finished, he has fixed it up very comfortably for the winter. Mrs. Russell, a widow lady of perhaps 50 years of age, died sudden ly at her home on the ButTom Place, in Jenks twp.t a week ago last Sunday. . E. E. Clapp Esq., of President, was paying his aunual visit to his newspaper friends last week, making them all happy "a year in advance." Priloer Agnew is now driving the dray formerly run by Eagles, and is always to be fouud ready to do haul ing of any kind. Give Prit. a trial. The name of Miss Tillie M. Ster ritt should have been included among the secretaries of the late Institute held here. It was unintentionally omitted. Mr. Frank GilleBpie of Whig Hill, oue of Forest county's prosper ous and enterpribiog merchants, paid our sanctum a pleasant and substan tial call last Saturday. The ice crop is already being har vested in this place, several parties having their ice houses filled. The article is only "fair to middling," there being considerable sand in it. The recent cold spell bas caused a heavy falling off in the supply oi natural gas in many towns around ns. We hope this difficulty will have been overcome before Tionesta takes on the gas. Mike Silk, the popular landlord of the Lcdlow House, is rejoicing over the birth of a 13 pound baby born into his family Thursday night. Mike always bas the best of everything. Warren Mirror. Our congratulations, Mike. We notice by the papers that J. D. Hnliogs has been elected Assistant Sergeaot of St. George, Tucker couuty, W. Va , whatever that office siguifM. We weren't aware that "Dad" pos sessed any military proclivities before, but it will not surprise us to bear any day that he has developed into a full fledged "Southern Brigadier." Charlie Raieig has lately disposed of two new wagous and a set of new bob sleds. He bas ten new wagons in stock, which makes a spleodid assort ment to select from. Mr. R. is better prepared now than ever to turn out uew work, and do repairing on short notice, and respectfully solicits & call from those in need of anything in bis line. The Mercantile Appraiement of the county for 1886 is published this week, and shows au increase of seven in the uumber of firms doiog business in the county. Mr. Jas. G. Carson, the Ap praiser, made good time in getting over the ground, having been only a trifle over four days, and walking nearly the entire distance. He bas set February 23J as the time for hold iog appeals. Mr. Harry Weston and Mrs. Nannie B. Waterman were married yesterday, 19th ioel., at the residence of Mr. Wilber W. Grove, by Rev. Small. The many friends here will wish the oewly married pair a bappy and prosperous future. The Bohemian oats peddlers are organizing associations in Berks and Lehigh counties. If the boast of an Erie county Yaukee peddler that be once sold a dozen wooden hams to a man in Lehigh county, and that the purchaser ate eleven of them before he dieoovered the swindle be true, that region may be a good locality for Bohemian oats at ten dollars a bushel. Venango Spectator. Maj. W. C. Howe, of this city bas been honored by appointment as aid-de-camp on the staff of Gen. S. L. Burdett, commaoder-in-cheif of the Grand Army of the Republic of the United Slates. The honor is worthily bestowed on a gallant soldier and his comrades in this section of the Stale will be pleased with this prominent recognition. II. J. Hopkins, of Pleas antville, one of Venango county's gal lant soldiers bas also been appointed to a like position on the staff of the Commander-in-chief.-Venango Citizen. The Grand Lodge, A. O. U. W., of Pa., dissolved its charter aod went into liquidation on last Friday. It will now be under the immediate con trol of the Supreme Lodge. This course seemed to be the only way out of a legal entanglement, and ought therefore he cheerfully acquiesced in by all connected with the Order. The officers for the ensuing year are as fol lows: Grand master workman, 8. A. Kline, of Pittsburgh ; grand foreman, W. A. Dougao, of Meadville; grand recorder, J. M. The following item from the Clar ion Democrat will doubtless ioterest many of our readers who are acquaint ed with the character mentioned : "Lo renzo Height was sent from this county to the Western Penitentiary several years ago. Shortly afterwards he be came insane and was transferred to the Dixmont Asylum, where be still is ao inmate. This County was charged with his maintenance and suit brought in Allegheny County to collect the charges. The Allegheny County Courts decided that Clarion county was liable for Hsight's keeping at Dix mont. An appeal was taken and the Supreme Court bas reversed the lower Court. The pioneer seed annual of Ameri ca, comes to ua this year a real gem, not a dry list of hard botanical names, but over thirty pages of reading mat ter, among w hich are articles on roses, house plants, cheap greenhouse, onioa culture, mushrooms, manures, young gardners, and very interesting read ing, followed by !;'() pages containing illustrations, descriptions and prices of seemingly everythi g the heart could desire in thelineofseeds.plants, bulbs, potatoes, etc. It is a mystery how this firm can afford to publish, and really give away, this beautiful work of nearly 200 pages of finest paper, with hundreds of Illustrations and two fine eolosed plates all en closed In an elegant cover. Any one desiring goods in this line .cannot do better than send 10 cents for the Floral Guide, to James Vick, Seed man, Rochester, N. Y. Deduct the 10 cents from first order sent for Beeda. Kellettville correspondence: Mrs Andrews received the intelligence to day that her husband is to better. He is still in the hospital at Toronto. Miss Hattie Lusher made her par eots a short visit last week. Mr. Levi Pierson is talking of selling his farm. James Miller and Albert Burdick are cutting wood for J. C. Welch. We are afraid we will lose our ice fool-bridge. At the meeting of the Chautau qua directors, held this week in Erie, they accepted a donation of $1,000 from Mrs. A. II. Jewett, of Philadel phia, to erect a cottage at the lake, to be built in Gothic style, with ten rooms, all to be placed at the disposal of needy young ladies coming there dor ing the session of the Assembly. We venture to say there will be vacancies in that cottage all summer. American girls won't classify themselves as "needy." If Mrs. Jewett had set the bouse aside foi the use of "pretty" girls, il would be crowded all season from garret to cellar. Franklin News Peterson's Magazine for Februa ry opens with a beautiful steel-engraving, after the celebrated picture of "Cinderella," by the great English ar tiBt, Sir John Millais. Then there is a mammoth colored steel fashion-plate; a double-size colored pattern in em broidery, from the Art School; two other full-page engravings ; and about fifty smaller wood-cuts. Such a wealth of illustration is unexampled. No magazine gives such original stories as "Peterson." As we have often said, every lady should take this magazine: for it is alike refined aod useful ; and the prise, two dollars a year, places it within the reach. Address Charles J. Peterson, 305 Chestnut St., Phils., Pa. West Hickory. Seeing nothing lately from this cor ner of the county in your paper, thought a few notes from this booming little town might not be amiss. Whitcomb, with his gang of men keeps it lively at the lower end of towo, and Geo. Watson, with his bri gade, makes it anything but lonesome among the lumber at the upper end. Everybody busy, and a noticeable fact that speaks well for the prosperity of the place is, "we have no loafers." 36 loads hauled across the river ia one day is but en average of the lumber brought to this point daily, since the good sledding, aud from four to six thousand feet is considered a common load. Our tannery is assured. Already several car loads of brick are on the ground preparatory to commence with. Last Thursday morning is claimed as the coldest of the season. Rev. John McGeary, a former For estonian, is arouud shaking bands with old friends. Dr. Stillson and Jas. Davis of Tid ioute paid us a pleasant visit last Sun day. Mrs. Rev. Small of Tionesta was a welcome visitor at many of our homes the past week. Dr. Siggins and bis estimable wife visited friends here the first of the week. The happiest man to be seen on our streets is C. P. Klein, and the most mis erable is Will Cooper. The former because 'il's a boy." The latter be cause, mother bas been away for the past 6 weeks and he bas had to run the cuitine. The straw that broke the camel's back was when his boarders refused to eat the hundredth success ive meal of burnt beans, burnt taters and burnt flap jacks, and said they would not grumble at 99 meals of burnt victuals, .but would "be gol darned if they would take in the hun dredth." Will says be just hates the sight of a pan-cake and if mother ever does get home there'l be one bouse on Hickory miuus buckwheat flour fur many years to come. Jan. 18, '86. Pbte. Oil Notes. Nothing very late has been heard from the Ahlshouse well on Hemlock. The rig is boarded up aod no one is allowed to see what's going on. Doubt less it will be in before the week closes. The Morck & Realty venture in Green Up. is going down as rapidly as can be. Other wells will be put down by this company as soon as the present one is completed. The Blizzard says of the operations around Scotch Hill, near the Forest county line, that "reports have come in from all quarters that the Wolfe A Kugler wildcat at Scotch Hill, bas beeo abandoned at a depth of 2,100 feet. Ye Blizzard man called on Mr. Wolfe for information and he says the well is shut down at 2,100 feet, but not abandoned by any means. The well will be drilled some more, as it bas not passed through the sand in which Mr. James "spirit well" bad a showing of oil, when the tools were lost in the bole. Mr. James bad pen etrated the rock fifty feet wheo mis fortune stopped the work aod the hole then contained more than a hundred feet of oil. In the same section Lerp er, Arnold & Co. are drilliog a test well on their large lumber tract, which was cased this week. Mr. Piper, who drilled the Wolfe & Kugler, is putting down the Leepcr, aod the Scotch Hill venture will await the completion of the other before drilling deeper." Two Cents Per Mile. Commencing Jan. 20, 1886, the Buffalo, New York & Philadelphia Railroad Co. will sell 1000-mile tick ets good for passage between all el a tiona (except the Narrow Guage Sys tera), at $20 each.
