J. E. WENK, EDITOR, WEDSKSDAT IHRKKIliG, DCf. !!, 18. The Ohio Frauds. Ihere were rnolis in L-inciorjaU a short time ogo, growing ont of the ac quitt&l of a tmirdcrer whose guilt was clearly proved. Then it was alleged that only the district attorney and ome unprincipled lawyers were re sponsible. None of the rioters wero punished, and the district attorney and the lawyers are Mill at liberty. At tbe October election John M'Leao, and hi; Democratic followers, io the hope of placing him in the United States Senate, perpetrated through the election officers the most outrageous frauds upon the ballot, by which a delegation of four Senators aud nine members, all Democrats, were sought to be seDt to tbe Legislature. Tbe frauds were so patent that the Circuit Court, after careful examination, di rected the proper officers to Issue cer tificates to the Republicans. Tbe Democrats appealed, and on the 12th iost. the Supreme Court reverted tbe decision of the Circuit Court, ignored the charges of fraud, and, overlooking the fact that the Democrats had not been elected, directed that the certiti caies oe grained to tbem. inus is fraud made successful, and thus is the eed sown wheu the law found itself powerless to punish murder and arson and riot, bringing forth its fruit io tbe corruption for partisan ends of the highest court of the State. Ohio must feel proud of such a court, aud the people of Cincinnati will have increased -confidence in the integrity of their election officers and the purity of their elections. Notwithstandidg this out rage, the Reform party will continue lo talk about the "great fraud." WHY NOT? Dakota Territory, it will be remem bered, held a convention some months since aod adopted a State constitution; She bas since under ordinance of the constitutional convention elected a Legislature which met on Monday and waa sworn in by General Hugh J. , Campbell, chairman of the Slate Ex ecutive Committee, 90 members out of 39 being in attendance. The election , -of Senators has probably already tak en place, and within a few days Dako ta will be knocking at the doors of Congress by ber Senators for admission to tbe family of States. Is there any good reason why she should not be ad i roitted? She i a prosperous communi ty with nearly population enough a js . year ago, for two representatives in r the House. It is not a mining region in which tbe population floats, advanc ing and receding, but an agricultural country in which the inhabitants lake root, remain and steadily increase. The Postal guide shows over nine bun i dred postoffices within his borders, , ' incog them forty-three above tbe i " fourth cUss, and in which the salaries ; are more than $1,000. They have for i several years been asking for admit i ) tanee and hoping that Congress would . 1 hold out tbe usual invitatiou by page '. ing cn enabling act. Now her citizens bave taken the advance stent, and a bave their Constitution ready for ap proval. Is there any reason why she should be admitted, except that she is Republicau ? None whatever. Yet it is asserted in some quarters that she will never be admitted until she is Democratic We will see. . Horrible Calamity. By tbe caving in of a coal mice at Nanticoke, near Wilkebarre ou Sat urday last, 23 men were entombed alive, i A force of 60 men hag been at work constantly ever hour since en deavoring to rescue tbe men from their awful predicament, but up to yesterday momiug had ul reached them. They hope every hour to reach them, and are hoping againt hope that they may yet find them alive. Lateb The latest report from the scene of tbe horror indicates hat there is do hope of rescuing the min ers, the tunnel being filled with debris and the deadly fire-damp. The an guish of tbe wives and mothers of the victims is heartrending. The Ohio Supreme Court bas ad journed over the holidays. It should thoroughly fumigate itself before re- The New York World evidently re alizes the peculiar characteristics of its patty as surely as Mr. Randal does, and agrees with bim that they need every available means of defense against themselves. At considerable length and with a good deal of force, though with extreme tenderness, it takes Mr. Morrison by the ear, as it were, leads him behind tho barn and gives him a good talking to. Tbe World is right. Its party needs muz zling badly. But it is no use, it does not like to be muzzled when the spoils are within reach. The result will be old fashioned Democratic wastefulness, aud Republican success in 1888. If as was believed four or five Con grosses ago, and as is still believed, the turning over to a general committee of the appropriations was a movement in tbe interest of honesty and econo my, but that the benefit has been lost to tbe country by the practice of the chairman using his power of reportiog or withholding reports, to delay legi lation, why could not amendments be mnde to his powers that would correct the evil, instead of returning to the old system, so prolific of evil? This is A puogebt but not an impertinent question. If that b-a-d man Randall has abused bis power as chairman of the committee, why not drop him from the chairmanship, and put some of the reform saints in his place Morrison, 8pringer, or some of them. Ia it sus pected they do not know enough? "Elia" and Charles Lamb. A unique genius, that of Charles Lamp. Just like nothing that ever appeared before them, or has since ap peared, are the Quaint and delightful "Essay of Elia," a new edition of wuicn nas recently been issued by Al den, "The Literary Revolution" pub lisher of New York. Turn to any of your cyclopedias and they will tell you that Charles Lamb was one of the most charming essayists that the Eng lish language has ever known, aud al so that his "Essays of Elia" are the choicest of his works. They are not merely the fmt work of their class, but, like "Pilgrim's Progress" and "Robinson Crusoe," they constitute a class by themselves. The volume is certainly one of the most delightful of the books described in Mr. Alden's 148 page illustrated catalogue, which he offers to send for 4 cents, or the 16 page catalogue which is sent free.
