The Fourth of July will occur next Saturday, and as per cuntom no pa per will be issued from this office next week. We will be "at home" to all who have business in our line to trans act, and especially to those who want to make us happy in a financial way. Our next paper will appear on July 15th. Id the meantime we hope all our patrons and friends will spend a happy Fourth. No paper from this office next week. The Fourth next Saturday. Let the eagle scream. Mr. A. J. Wallace of Clariogton, was io town Monday. Miss Alice Brenuan is again with Tionesta relatives aud friends. Fivo hundred and twenty-two votes is uo.t a bud showing for an off year. Hon. E. L. Davis has had an elegant coat of paint put on his river side residence. Geo. Dougherty of Kittanning, is again occupying his position in the harness shop of L. Fulton. The time table of the B., N. Y. & P. It. R., has been corrected and will be found reliable in this issue. The days are now growing short er, but it requires a pretty close ob server to detect any difference as yet. The church case against Rer. J. M. Dewoody of Franklin, will be tried in Tionesta this week, beginning to morrow. We etnoke this morning to the health of Miss Herman, who arrived at the domicile of het smiling father, R. M. Herman, last evening. Mr. F. R. Lanson has moved ialo his neat new house at the lower end of town, and no doubt feels at borne iu the true sense of the word. Henry and Will Sibble, the for mer stopping in the Cogley Run oil field, and the latter at Macksburg, Ohio, are at home on a visit this week. We neglected to state last week that the plaintiff in the case of John S. Davis et al. vs. Peter Berry et al. took a non-suit. This is the famous Balltowu oil land suit. The Treasurer of the school board, Mr. Kelly, gives notice that taxpayers can save ten per cent, on their school tax by paying same to him before August 10th. The store of Nicholas Gilfert of Lickiogville, was again robbed one night last week. The thieves are bound tu break the old man up, it seems, thu being about the fifth time they have made a raid on him. Lightning cut a lively figure at the Marienville depot last Saturday. Striking an iusulator on one of the telegraph poles it skipped from one to another until it entered the build ing, where most of the instruments were demolished. No serious dam age was done. We note with a good deal of sat isfaction the acquisition of Mr. Mor ris Einstein to the Republican ranks, he having been a delegate to the re cent convention of Warren county, and only lacked a few votes of being the successful candidate for Represen tative delegate to the Republican State Convention from that county. Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Baker passed the Sabbath with Tionesta friends on their return from n rather extended wedding tour. This happy young couple enjoy the highest esteem and friendship of our townspeople, among whom they received a hearty welcome and showers of congratulations. They will shortly go to housekeeping at Mr. B.'s old home in Spring Creek, War ren county. Mrs. Dr. J. Price of West Ches ter, Fa., is visiting her sister, Mrs. S. D. Irwin. She is accompanied by her niece, Miss Rachel Frick, of Berwyn, Chester Co, Miss II. G. Irwio sister of S. D. Irwin, Esq., Is also visiting relatives in town, During the past week strawber ries have been selling in this place at 10 cents per quart. Mr. Herman bad some of the finest that ever came to this market ; in fact, they were fully up to the fine pictures generally shown by the average fruit tree agent. July 1st, and the corn hardly "knee high to a grasshopper," but all the same it looks rich and thrifty, and will probably come on well when the nights get warmer. Other crops are good in this section, and on the whole there will doubtless be an average yield all around. J. G. Passauer finished a cellar wall for Geo. Walters near Newman ville, recently, which contained a stone measuring 15 feet and 8 inches in length and 16 inches square. The stone was hauled by one team up a pretty eteep grade. A good sized building stone, we should say. The Republicans of Warren county placed the following gentle men in nomination at their conven tion on the 22d ult. : Associate Judge, C. C. Merritt ; Sheriff, R. A. Love ; Prothonotary, D. U. Arird ; Coroner, Dr. J. Burroughs ; Rep. Delegate to State Convention, G. W. Peck. Some weeks ago Miss Dolly Hood departed for a visit with her friend Miss Hattie Ittel of Dallas, McKean county; since her arrival there she has taken a relapse of her firmer sickness and is now in a criti cal condition. Her brother and sis ter were summoned to her bedside. A good wall was opened in tbe Balltown district last week. It is located on or near Minister creek, not a great way from the Proper Reserve, and is owned by Jas. Welch and some of Tionesta's citizens. We under stand the well made a hundred bar rels before tbe sand bad been pene trated a foot. Judge Ntal filed his opinion in tbe Hood-Hastiogs election contest at Indiana recently, and dismissed the petition at the cost of the petitioners because of failure of petitioners to file a bill of particulars in response to the rule taken by the respondent (Hood). This entitles Mr. Hood to retain bis seat as State Senator. Clarion Republican. Last Thursday evening J. T. Myler and J. C. Slack, both young at torneys of the Allegheuy county bar, lauded at the water works, having made a canoe trip from near Frosts down Spring creek and the Clarion river. The water had been getting a little low and their canvas canoes showed a little worse for contact with rocks and snags. Clarion Democrat. A new swindle is on the road which is thus described: "Two men call on a farmer and represent them selves to he photographers. They agree to furoieb the farmer with a photograph of his house for 50 cents. The farmer signs au agreement to re ceive a photograph at the price named, which agreement turns up in due time to be a promissory note for a goodly aura. Quite a goodly number of the taxpayers of the borough met at the school house Monday evening to take into consideration the purchase of a fire extinguisher. Tbe sentiment seemed to be almost unanimously in favor of some kind of apparatus wherewith to fight fire, while most all were of opinion that the machine ex hibited by Mr. Williams was a suc cess. Remarks were made by many present and it was finally decided to ask the town council to call a meeting for the purpose of getting the senti ment and voice of as mauy of the taxpayers as possible on the subject. It is earnestly hoped that when such ineetiug is called every property own er and taxpayer of the town will be present to give his views. It is of the utmost importance to all and should not be treated indifferently. List of Letters. Remaining in Tionesta, Pa., P. O. July 1st, 1885 : Algernon La porta. John Cole. James Coppenger. Thou. Pursuant to the Rules of the party the Return Judges of the Republican party of Foient County, elected at the Primaries held Saturday June 27, 1885, met in convention at tbe Court House, in Tionesta, Fa., on Tuesday, June 30, 1885. Tbe meeting was call ed to order by Chairman C. A. Ran dall. C. M. Shawkey of Tioneeta, and W. S. Colo of Howe, were elected Secretaries. The first thing in order was the call ing for the returns from the different voting precincts, which was done. As each district was called for the Return Judge stepped forward and presented his returns, which the Chairman read. The result showed that Mr. John Thomson, of Harmony township, had received 247 votes for Associate Judge, and Mr. John A. Proper 275 votes. Mr. Proper having received a majori ty of the votes cast, was declared by the Chairman tbe nominee of the Re publican party for Associate Judge. Upon motion the nomination was made unanimous by the convention without a dissenting voice. For District Attorney, P. M. Clark Esq., bad no opposition ; having re ceived 345 votes he was declared unan imously nominated. For Representative Delegate to the State Convention, F. F. Wbittekin was elected without opposition, having received 367 votes. The Convention then proceeded to elect a Chairman of the County Com mittee for the ensuing year. S. D. Irwin Esq., was placed in nomination and unanimously chosen. He was sent for, and after thanking the con vention for the honor conferred upon him, made a rieat speech in which he congratulated tbe members present on their zeal and devotion they showed to the principles of the Republican party; he looked upon it as an indi cation that they meant to stand by their guns and achieve victory iu the fall. Chairman Randall, upon retiring from his position took occasion to de liver a short address which did him proud. He said that now that tbe Republicans had decided on their candidates, it was tbe duty of every good and true member of the party to lay aside whatsoever differences may have arisen during tbe campaign, and work for the complete and tri umphant election of the nominees. By a united effort our victory would be complete in the fall as it bad been in past years. It was the duty of every Republican to see that unity prevailed in the ranks, and all should labor with one end in view, and that success. He thanked the Republi cans of Forest county for the sup port they bad given him in the cam paign of last summer, and predicted as grand a victory iu the one upon which we are about to enter. Mr. Randall's remarks were received with hearty applause, and at the finish a vole of thanks was heartily tendered him for his able and efficient work while Chairman of the Republican County Committee. The Convention then adjourned with the best of feeling. Some of the precincts having neg lected to elect members of the County Committee, it was left with the Chair man to supply all vacancies by ap pointment. We will publish tbe list as soon as completed. Of our candidates we shall speak more fully as the campaign progresses. Our nominee for Associate Judge, Hon. John A. Proper, is a man who will always administer justice with fairness and impartiality to all, with out fear or favoritism to any, as his past record will attest. As a citizen of more than forty years' standing he is too well and favorably known to need any especial recommendation by us. We bespeak for him an ear nest support and feel assured he will be elected by a good majority. P. M. Clark Esq., candidate for Dis trict Attorney is a young lawyer of fine abilities, and will bring honor to the position to which be aspires. He ; is a devoted student and a conscien tious gentlemen in every way. He will undoubtedly be earnestly sup ported and elected if we can read the 1 signs aright. Mr. F. F. Wbittekin was the unani mous choice for Delegate to the State Convention. The Convention bad sufficient confidence in his integrity to not incumber him witb instructions for any particular candidate ; we be lieve, however, that Mr. W. is favora ble to Col. Quay's candidacy for the State Treasurysbip. Of the defeated candidate, Mr. John Thomson we can say that he ran a good vote throughout the county, showing that be had a host of friends. Had he been successful he would have had the tame earnest - support in the fall. Come to Tionesta on the Fourth. Tionesta will offer numerous' at tractions to those who are turning over in their minds where to go on the Fourth. Besides the races which we again mention this week, there will be a game of base ball on the island, between Tionesta and Tidioute, a dance at the rink in the afternoon and evening, and plenty of ice cream and accompanying refreshments at Acomb store building during the day, the proceeds from which will be ap plied toward getting up a brass band in Tionesta.
