' We are authorized to announce JAMES A. SCOTT, of Jenks township, as a can didate for County Auditor, subject to Republican usages. Tub Morrison Tariff bill was con sidered by the Ways and Means com mittee last week, and in a short session of less than two hours the bill as in troduced was so iar amended as to meet with the approval of every Dem ocratio member of the committee, and it was agreed that it should be report ed this week, and an effort roado to . secure its passage through the House. 'The amendments cut off the free list with the exception of salt, coal and , timber, these interests, however, being tingled out for slaughter by these cowardly free traders, who fear to ad vacate their principle as a whole be cause of the ffect upon the vote for President November next, they,, being more anxious to obtain control of the government than to maintain a princi pie. By the way, th Democratic organs oi this county, nave oeen as dumb as clams on that subject," aud from their columns it would be diffi cult to learn of any interest they have in the prosperity of the manufactur ers of lumber in our county. They seem to prefer to follow the dictation ef their party leaders, and to suffer this attack upon a vital interest to be consummated without raising their voice in denunciation of the outrage, or to aiarm our people wnne there is yet time to enter their protest agains an unnecessary attack upon a leading industry, in the prosperity of which nil our people Are interested. Brook- vute fiepublican. ihe iJaiias (.iexasj Herald is alarmed by the selection of Chicago as the place for holding the Democratic - convention. It regards it as an indi cation that money is to rule in the sel ection of a eadidate and says : If the Democracy is intending to enter this fall upon a "hurrah" and"bar'l" cam paign simply or chiefly, they must ex pect to continue to sit under the shadow for another four years. Distrust, lack of confidence in their rising power and general disgust at the incapacity and idiocy of the leaders is the char acteribtio of the Democratic poet this year. J he straws, this spring, are not blowing in the direction of the Dem ocratio camp.
