Brother Payne, of Ohio, protests that he is not a candidate for presi dent, but his sons and sons-in-law inti mate that the old man doesn't know what he's talking about. Ben Butler saye he ia not a widow and never was married to any politi cal- party. To save his reputation then, be bad better remove the arm of the Democratic party from about his waist. igi At a recent meeting of ihe Demo . .r . i . crane national committee Held in Washington, Chicago wus tht place selected and July 8th the date for holding the Democratic National Convention for the selection of Presi dential victims. This Is one month later than the Republican Convention in tbe same citv. ' Tue Democrats nf Washington are distraught over the Pennsylvania elec lion. The perplexities of the politic al situation are not conducive to hope fulness in the Democrat, to be sure, and there does not keeoa to be much prospect of a betterment. It might have been well for the Democrats if they bad not a majority in tbe present House. Similar power has saved the Republican party from defeat in the past, aud is quite likely to do so in the future. The blunders of the pres cut session have already, by reveal iog the purposes of the leaders, placed the Democratic party on the defen sive, and a few more weeks will put it to rout. "Reduction of duties in the direct ion of unfettered commerce" is the new name iuveated for it since the people have made it appear very plain that (hey will sit down with uncomfortable emphasis upou auy men or party who come fooling around with free trade, For a short time, a hen our free trado stateemcnand journalists got it through their hair that the people, were goiog to make it interesting for the cranks they were a good deal troubled as to how they were to get out of it without a square back-down, till some genius who is given to crose-eyed politics hit upon "reduction of duties in the direc tioo of unfettered commerce. " Now they are happy. Before the masses of the people cuu discover that the com merce they wish to unfetter :s not American but British commerce, they can get down geotly and out of the way, and the whole iisue will have been put out of sight until a more con .venient season. "Reduction or duties ;n tho direction of unfettered com nierce" is good, very good; when wi ilie Putriot adopt it? Our neighbor iboulj ar u'rg-r ou tho trail aucKcoino in at tbe heel cf the hunt, or it will not ehino with brilliant lustre among the enterprising partisans. Brace up, neighbor. Kcepup with the times. llarrwbury Tclrgraph. ' . ' - The determination of the Demo crats to carry tho district of the (late) Ion. Dudley C. Haskell, of Kansas, war announced with an extraordinary flourish of trumpets. Their candi date luces described as one or tbe best stump speakers in the Slate, was pitted against farmer Edward II. uustoc. Iliggs besides his own ad vantages as a speaker, was helped abundantly by other and held more meetings addressed by more ppuakers, and ruakd a more exhaustive and sys tematic cauvass. But Funstan beat )ini by a majority of about 4,500. t is a case of too much fraukuess. liggs made his fight squarely on tho free trade itiBue, and had three or four Republican free trade cranks come out to help him by delivering free trado lectures during the canvass. he result demonstrates that the more the Democrats run ou free trade plat- inus the more they wont be elected. Next. o Free Trade Tinkers. The bill introduced in Congress by Mr. Morrison, chairmau of Ways and Means committee, and who represents the Democratic majority of that bo- ly, be being the immediate friend of Speaker Carlilse, representing thai geutleman's views ou the tariff ques tion, proposes placing all kinds of umber on the free list, opening our markers to the free corapetiou of the world.
