H.'s ' Recollections of Fifty Years," published in theVeuan go Spectator, we cull the following in regard to this county : The most uf the land in Forest co it u ty is heavily timbered with beech, sugar maple, hemlock, ash and chrrry. South of Bucks Mills and Panther Rock are many nice nituutioua for manufacturing maple sugar. Salmon creek and the Branch are both excel lent water powers. Tho stream called the Branch heads ubout three miles south of Ballluwn, runs a west course, about parallel with Tiooesla cieek, and empties into Salmon creik, about a mile from its moiith. There are more deer at the present time along the Branch than ou any other stream iu Forest county. I havehnnted there some, but never had any ruu over me yet,' They were al ways going the other way. Salmon creek heads near Marieo, the old county seat, or Blood's Settle ment, as it wa3 originally called. It runs a northwest course "aud empties into Tinnnsta two and a half miles above Newtown Mills, I was once hunting at the head of tbe Branch with two companions. I went east from the camp by myself aud soon got on a bear track. I followed till I came to the site of an improvement. It was where William Patterson lived. As it was raining aud I was wet, I staid thore all night. Mr. Patterson was au old soldier of the war of 1812, and had fought at the battle of Balti. mora. I had oue of Colt's uavy re volvers with me, and showed it to the old man. It was the first revolver he hud ever been. I explained its work, iug to him, and as an oil'.et he showed me a butcher knife, which he said was made to drive the British out of Bal timore, lid was then a very old man -over ninety and age haa begun to tell uii him. He lived in that lono p"t, a considerable distune from any ise'L'hbf.r. II? iDI hist fall.
