REPUBUCAN STATETICKET.
FOR BLTREME JCDCie,
HENRY GREEN,-
it.
of Northampton County.
TOR AUDITOR GENERAL,
JOnN ALEMON,
of Blair County.
The National Debt was decreased
15,672,010 during tho month of Feb
ruary. Mr. Tildes rays lie holds the first
rnortgago on tho Democratic party,
and will not be counted out by the
national Convention.
Wasuburn-e is for Grant first and
for Wushburne second. Grant it for
Grant first and Wnsbburne second.
That ii a distinction frith quite an
able-bodied di (Terence.
Blaine says ho has finally got him
self into such a satisfactory frame of
mind that hit nomination at Chicago
would not surprise him and his defeat
be no disappointment. Thai .13 com
mon sense in a high degree. .
Garcelon not only "went behind
the returns," but it now appears that
he bad return! manufactured for the
emergency when tho genuine ones did
uot contain sufficient technical errors
to count out au elected Republican.
The distress in Ireland it reported
to be increasing, notwithstanding the
relief that it being furnished from
both sides of the Atlantic. Fully a
quarter of a tnilliou of Irish 'people
are now dependent upon 'charity for
continued existence.
J. fc. WKNK, i ' -
Tha Grant boom got another lift
in New York last week. The State
Convention at Ulica instructed its del
egates to Chicago for him by a vote of
217 ajjaiust 180 lor Blaine. Tho unit
rule was adopted the same as in this
State. A few more delegations like
. these aud Grant's chuncet for aomina
tion may be set down as very good. '
Dennis Kearnet bat conceived
the idea that there is a conspiracy on
foot iu Sau Fiuucitfca lor hi) assassin,
ation, and in a speech at a Hoodlum
meeting the other night he stated thai
he would leave in the bauds of certain
parties a lisof names of peraous who
were to be guillotined, by the work
ingmen in tha event of his (Kearney's)
assassination. It must be true that
Kearuey's power is waning or ' he
would uot be compelled to resort . to
such petty trickery to keep himnelf in
plac at the head of the Workingmeu's
party. ' ':, '", , , ;
From D. H.'s ' Recollections of
Fifty Years," published in theVeuan
go Spectator, we cull the following in
regard to this county :
The most uf the land in Forest
co it u ty is heavily timbered with beech,
sugar maple, hemlock, ash and chrrry.
South of Bucks Mills and Panther
Rock are many nice nituutioua for
manufacturing maple sugar. Salmon
creek and the Branch are both excel
lent water powers. Tho stream called
the Branch heads ubout three miles
south of Ballluwn, runs a west course,
about parallel with Tiooesla cieek,
and empties into Salmon creik, about
a mile from its moiith.
There are more deer at the present
time along the Branch than ou any
other stream iu Forest county. I
havehnnted there some, but never had
any ruu over me yet,' They were al
ways going the other way.
Salmon creek heads near Marieo,
the old county seat, or Blood's Settle
ment, as it wa3 originally called. It
runs a northwest course "aud empties
into Tinnnsta two and a half miles
above Newtown Mills, I was once
hunting at the head of tbe Branch
with two companions. I went east
from the camp by myself aud soon got
on a bear track. I followed till I
came to the site of an improvement.
It was where William Patterson lived.
As it was raining aud I was wet, I
staid thore all night. Mr. Patterson
was au old soldier of the war of 1812,
and had fought at the battle of Balti.
mora. I had oue of Colt's uavy re
volvers with me, and showed it to the
old man. It was the first revolver he
hud ever been. I explained its work,
iug to him, and as an oil'.et he showed
me a butcher knife, which he said was
made to drive the British out of Bal
timore, lid was then a very old man
-over ninety and age haa begun to
tell uii him. He lived in that lono
p"t, a considerable distune from any
