v. H. DUNN EDITOR, WEDNESDAY MOUSING, MIR. 17, 1878. SENATOR CHARLES W. STONE. Claries W Scone, who represents tht Forty-eighth district, comprised ot the counties of Warren and Venango, in the Senate, is one of the most popular and promising men in the higher bransh of the Legislature. Senator Stone is universally esteemed by men of both parties for Lis integrity, honesty of pur pose and manly characteristics. lie is a man who, while pleasant and affable at all times and to everybody, possess es decision of character and dares to say "no" when that is the proper word. In debate he is cool, calm and delib erate, and always expresses his convic tions. His speeches are not delivered for oratorical effect, but to present the strongest arguments upon his side of the question. There is nothing of the demagogue about him, and when be rises to speak he addresses himself to Senators upon the floor and not to spec tators in the galleries. Possessed of scholarly attainments and legal ac quirements, he ia well qualified to per form his Senatorial duties to the satis faction of his constituents, to the credit of himself and the good of tba State. Ho combines qualities that admirably adnpt him for public life in these de generate days, when the number of our statesmen is supposed to be growing smaller by degrees and beautifully less, and while there are more brilliant men in the legislative halls, there are none governed by more correct princi ples or endowed with greater good aense. ' Senator Stone was born at Groton, Middlesex county, Massachusetts, June 29, 1843, and consequently has not yet attained the age of thirty-five years. Very early in life he was left, by the death of his father, to make his way in the world by the exercise of his own energies. But his efforts at self advancement were untiring even in boyhood, and from the common schools he went to Lawrence Academy, and from thero to Williams College. He was graduated at the latter institution in 1863, having paid his way through college by teaching in vacation. Soon after finishing his collegiate course he became principal of the Union Acad emy, at Warren, Pa., and continued in charge until appointed Superinten dent of the schools of Warreu county in March, 1865. In September of the same year he was elected Principal of me Aris Academy, uuring tne sura mer of 1866 he entered the office of Judge Wetmore, of Warren, as a stu dent at law, and in September, 1867, ha was admitted to practice in the sev eral courts of the county. In January, 1868, he entered into partnership with Judge It. Brown, for the practice of his profession, and this legal firm still continues in existence, la the fall of 1869 he was elected to the House of Representatives from the Warren and Venango district, on the ticket with Hon. J. D. Junkin, then a citizen of Kouseville, and now a resident of But ler. In 1870 he was re-elected with out opposition, me uemocrata paying . him the rare compliment of declining to put a man in the field against him. In 1876 he was elected to the Senate " for two years, carrying bis district bv four hundred more vetes than were cast for Rutherford B. Hayes. The personal appearance of Senator Stone is prepossessing, wilnout being distinguished or dramatic. He im presses one with his sincerity, integrity, and good judgment upon the most cas ual acquaintance. He is about the medium height, of rather light build, but wiry and capable of great endu rance. His hair, whiskers, eyes, and complexion are dark, his nose is prom inent, and his features clear cut and regular. He dresses with neatness, but not for display. He has the culture, bearing, and impress of a gentleman, and always preserves his. dignity, but w ithout any approach to pride or ar rogance. He is at once a scholar, a statesman, and a man of the people. Born poor, cradled in adversity, and reared to self-dependence, he is the architect of his own fortune and a rising man in the State. His record, public and private, is without a blem ish, and at home, where he is best known he is esteemed the highest. . The public services of Senator Stone have so highly commended him to the Republicans of his section of the State that they are urging him to become a ' candidate for the office of Lieutenant Governor. That SenatonStone would be a source of strength to any ticket that could be nominated, none will "dare deny, and if the people of the uorthwestfrn counties will but push his vuVwiS"earnettly and with vigor, the hances are that he will be successful. ; ioce Colonel Hoyt has been agreed upon for Governor, Senator Stone's lo- 'Aity would seem to be in hia favor, suni besides he is a man upon whom all of the elements of the party could nuitc. While he is by no means a negative man he has, ai Mackey would ay, "but few rough edges." If the Republican candidate for Lieutenant Governor nbould come west, Stone will doubtless be the man. Newmyer has feuii named, but Judgo Sterrett's can- '' lacy would be fatal to bib chances, !t it would hardly have any bear htevtr npoa Htoue.J'itdburgh tki: i8Ui:ns n aim is -O F- SEATED AND UNSEATED LANDS IN ' FOREST COUNTY, PA.
