. sAKkU Jt TI j UN A UATK POST Our old frierd Judge Tim Farrnr, a Lake Iro video cc, who H wtll known throughout tlit SUta at a law Ttr and jurist of eminentidiilitiej.and gentleman of mint loveaMe c)h me ter, telU at hii owu expense, afid with the ktenett gusto, a story which we think too good to lose. It appears that some years ago while nduig through one of the prettiest districts of North IiOtiisiana lie came, about sundown, to a creek which was to deep as to ncces Hitate a swimming fast. The Judge hcioir a man or vigorous and lcvinci Me determination, no sooner realized this emergency than he promptly dis mounted, undressed himself with great dispatch, and attired only in hia high plug bat and a pair ot spectacles, be strode bis gallant cob and urged him to the Venture. After a desperate struggle the other side waa gained, and the Judge again dismounting, this time with a profound sigh of relief, waa about to resume his integuments, when the horse, prompted brsome diabolical spirit, atarted from hie side and trotted slowly down the road. - - Of course, Uio Judge had no re course but to trot after him; and thereupon thera ensued one of tlio Most remarkable and pictresque chases ever known in history or tradition. The horse appeared to bare no motive save that of keeping a certain distance ahead of the Judge, and of finding some comfortable barnyard where he might refresh himself after such gigantic efforts. The Judge, whatever tii ay have been bis ambitions, ccnGned himself to the effort of keeping the truant beast in sight It must have been cheerful and invigorating ex peTlente' t6' cr the Judge trotting briskly along that smooth and sandy road, his venerable plug hat pulled oyer his eyea and his xpectac.es bob bing np and down upon his nose. The c.ae waa long, and the moisture of great exertion would gather on his brow, and then, when he reached around for bis handkerchief, alas! it Waa not there. All of which had the effect of impressing the Judge with his very peculiar and unfortunate sit uation, and imparting renewed play and lightness to his legs. So the two bowled pleasantly alng, pressing a steady relative distance, until just as the setting sun was red dicing the distant hill and touching the Judge's manly form with gold, the horse whisked suddenly into a gate and bolted with eager haste iu the dis tance. ' i The farm-house sat in a grove of trees whose shadows made a great darkness round it, and from this grove, aKtne'JoJge was scampering furiously after hie horse and wardrobe there is sued sundry yellow dogs, surly of mieo and shoggy of appearance. The Judge felt that it would be utterly impossi ble, nuder these circumstances, to as sume that mnjesty of aspect and fear lessness of gaze which is currently be lieved to be the correct thing with dogs, and eo, seeing a friendly gate post near at hand, he gave one wild bound and reached its summit just as the leanest and fiercest of the dogs snapped viciously at bis legs. When the uproar had subsided, and the Judge, realizing the absurdity of me situation, naci regained ins cus tomary frame of mind, a female voice ws heard calline from the house: "Who's there!" "A fellow creature iu distress, mad am." "Where are you T" "On the gate-post',"' sa'd the Judge, beginning to enjoy the joke. "What can I do for you ?" , II waa too much. The Judge's old humor and a quizzical love of merri ment came over bim. "Call off these dogs, and bring me me all the fig leaves on the place. ,Wtc Orleant ISeayune. The Danburv man. who is now in Kurope, thus "describes the effects of an English dinner: The English eat breakfast at eight o'clock, or later, lanch at one o'clock, and have dinner at six or seven o'clock. The break fast is light, the luncheon similar, and the dinner is quite hearty. One Eng lish dinner in the Inexperienced Amer ican stomach will produce that night 12 cross-eyed lions; 8 bears, with illuminated beads; 1 awful dogwith twelve legs, and 14 bow-legged ruffians ' chased by a host of piratical cauli flowers, mounted on saddle of beef, roasted. Any respectable chemist will corroborate this statement. Webelieve it has not yet been re marked that4 the present year was chosen for the excursion of the comet because it is an off' year' in politics-. Otherwise it could have expected to attract little attention, at least in th-ia country. jS Y. Herald. , ana postal earn sorvice is m fine working order. Lew than a hundred years ago the Pennsylvania Legislature paused a law that "no member thereof should come to the house barefoot, or eat hid bread and cheee ot the steps."
