A 1U!1 SK'KNK IN A HM OKINIJ-4'AK. An smuting incident occurred re Mully iu tbu nioking car of a C. C. C. & I. R. train between Shelbv and tliio city. A womnn accompanied hy a poodle dog entered the car just pri or to the departure of the train from the former point, ami after oVspoitiDg her dog on one seat, turned over the back of another or.e, so that each seat ficed the other. Together alio and hor canine companion thus monopo lixed two entiro eat.. Appearance s?eicl to indicate that she was not aware that the car was one exclusively for the convenience of those addicted to the use of the "weed ;" but of this fact the was soon apprised by the conductor, who advised her to obtain a seat in another cur, in forming her at the same time that the accommodations in the way of seats in the other coaches wero superior to those where she then was. However, she insisted on remaining, urging that her presence would deter theoccupaDts of the car from smoking, and she wonld consequentfy experience no dis join fort from the fumes of tobacco. Long before the train reached this city, however, a gentleman sitting di rectly in front of her produced his case, and taking therefrom a cigar be gan puffing away at it in a manner whicn seemed peculiarly calculated to aggravate the "strong-minded" wo rnau immediately back of him. In an instant, by a strategic movement, she wrested the obnoxious cigar from his mouth and threw it cut of the window, exclaiming, "If thero is anything I do hate, it's tobacco smoke." The passengers who had witnessed the affair wore convulsed with laugh ter; but the offending smoker surpass ed whatever emotions mav have been struggling for expression in words or actions and maintained throughout the same impurturbnle gravity which bad characterized him from the first. Calmly rising from his seal ho opened the car window nearest him, fastened it up, and reaching over the se.t back of him took that woman's poodle dog and threw him out of the window and at far beyond as possible, at the same time saying "If there is anything I do hate, it's a poodle dog !" The scene which followed befgnrs description. The car resounded with laughter, and as the extreme ludicrous nest of the affair became apparant to the principle acloss i it, they too joined with the rest. Despite the re gret incident to the loss of her dog, the woman eould not repress her in timation to laugh at the unexpected final of the aflkir. He was not a man to care about being above the clouds, or to bo impressed with the grandeur of the scene of ac tion. David's attention on that day was turned toward Missionary Kidge." On the 26th of November, 1861, David's regiment charged up the ridge, and earecred forward on a lino that took them to a building occupied by Gen eral Brag as headquarters" The buys wero in the fieriest of a firce , fight, but still they gave the house that had acquired a sort of fame a second look. David investigated, and he found a solitary chicken in a well-preserved coop. This had evi dently been hld for the General's din ner, and was now iu danger of being shot fifty times a minute. David watched the dodging chickeo and the chips flying from the coop as bullets after bullet struck it, witji the greatest interest, and leaving his place for a moment ho ran to the coop, caught the chicken, and with the chicken tied to his belt, was again in line. All had been done so quickly that it was difficult for his companions to realize that he had missed a shot. Another disappearance, and he was seen iu General Bragg's kitchen and then coming forth with a sack of meal. This he tied to his belt, and resumed his place in tho Hue moving against the rebels on the second ridge. After the battle, he dressed and cooked his chicken, and made from the meal some most astonishing corn dodgers. He remembers that as ho was eating lie felt a little sorry for Bragg, who, in addition to his defeat, had lust his chicken: And ho remembers that the boys all looked very wishful while lie was eating, but that they called aim a fool when he risked so much iu going to tho coop for the chick. David is tolerably clear in his descrip tion of the fight on Missionary Ridge, and it runs about this way : "We went up the ridge sodden like. Wo didn't think we was going up when we started, and neither did t'.ie rebs. There was a mighty big fuss. Wo pushed ahead to Bragg's quarters, and there we stole his chicken ant the corn meal. Then, when we fit a , good while, we cooked the chicken and eat it up, and mado 6ome corn dodgers and eat them up. This is the biggest fight I was tver iu."
