On motion the timo for holding the Frimary Elections fixed on Saturday, June 22d, 1872, between the hours of 1 and 7 o'clock P. M. NATIONAL REPUBLICAN NATIONS. NOMI- The National Republican Conven tion held at Philadelphia last week, nominated U. S. Grant by acclama tion for President, and Henry Wilson, of Massachusetts for Vice President, -on first ballot. No encomiums are necessary. Roth these men are known to every intelligent voter in tho Union. A more harmonious and enthusiastic convention was never held in the United States. We append the plat form adopted by the Convention : THE I'LATFORM. Tlio Republican party of the United States, assembled iu National Conven tion in the city of Philadelphia, on the 5th and Cili days of June, 1872, again declares its faith, appeals to its history, and announces its position up on the" questions before the country : 1. During its eleven years' suprema cy it has accepted, w ith grand courage, the solemn duties of the time. Itsup prewd a gigmitic rebellion, cinuiici pnk'd four Hi il i ions of tJaves, decreed i-jiinl citizenship of all, and establish ed universal arjflrngo, an exhibition of unparalleled magnanimity; it crim inally punished no man for political oll'onses, and warmly welcomed all who proved their' loyally by obeying the laws and dealing justly with their neighbor; it has steadily decreased, with a firm hand, the fentiment anil discords of the great war and initiated a wieo policy towards tho Indians. Tho Pacific Railroad and similar vast enterprises have been generally and successfully conducted, the public lands freely given to actual settlers; immigration protected and encouraged and a full acknowledgement of natur alized citizens rights secured from Eurepean powers; a uniform nation al currency has been provided, repudi ation frowned down, the national cred it sustained tinder most extraordinary burdens, and new bonds negotiated at lower rates ; the revenues have been carefully collected and honestly ap plied, and despite the annual larce re ductions in rates of taxation the public debt has been reduced during General Grant's presidency at the rate of one hundred million dollars a year; a great uuauciai crisis nas been avoided and peace and plenty prevail throughout the land; menacing foreign difficulties nave been peacelullv anJ honorablv compromised, and tho honor and pow er or me nation kept in high respect throughout the world. This glorious record of the past is the party's best picage lor the lulure, and we believe the people will not entrust the govern ment to any party or combination of men who have resisted every step in this beneficial progress. 2. Complete liberty and equal equality and the enjoyment of all civ il, political and public rights should be established and effectually main tained throughout the Union by effi cient and appropriate State and feder al legislation ; neither the law or its administration should admit of any discrimination iu respect to citizens by reason of race, creed, color, or previ ous condition of servitude. 3. The recent amendments to the national constitution should be cordial ly sustained, because they are right not merely tolerated because they are a law and should be carried out ac cording to their spirit by appropriate legislation, the enforcement of which can be safely entrusted only to the party that secured theso amendments. 4. The National Government should seek to maintain an honorable peace wun an nations, protecting its citizens everywhere, and sympathizing with all who strive for greater liberty. 5. Any system of civil service under which subordinate positions of the Government are considered rewards for mere party zeal, is fatally demor alizing, and we therefore favor a re form in the system of laws which shall abolish the evils of patronage and mako honesty, efficiency aud fidelity essential qualifications for public posi tion, without practically creatiugalife tenure of office. 0. We are opposed to further grants of public lands to corporations aud monopolies, aud demand that the na tional domain be eet apart for free homes for the people. 7. The annual revenues, after pay ing current debts, should furnish a moderate balance for the reduction of the principal, and that revenue.except as much as may be derived from a tax on tobacco and liquors, be raised by duties on importations, the duties on which should bo so adjusted as to aid in securing remunerative wages to la bor, and promote the industries, growth and prosperity of the couutry. 8. We hold that in the undying honor of the soldiers and sailors, wljose valor saved the Union, that their pen sions are a sacred debt of the nation, and the widows and orphans of thoe who died for their country are entitled to the C?re of a generous and grateful people; we favor sucb additional leg islation as will extend the bounty of the Ooverument to all our soldiers and sailors who were honorably discharged, and who in line of duty became dis abled, without regard to length of ser vice or cause of such discharges. 9. The doctrine of Great Britain and other European powers concern ing allegiance, "Once a subject, alwavs a subject," having at last through the efforts of the Republican party been abandoned, and the American idea of individual right to transfer his allegi ance having been accepted by the Eu ropean nations, it is the duty of our Government to guard with jealous care the rights of adopted citizens against assumption and unauthorized claims by their former governments, aud we urge continual and careful en couragement aud protection of volun tary immigration. . 10. The frauking privilege ought to be abolished and the wav prepared for a speedy reduction in the rates of postage. 11. Among questions which press our attention is that which concerns the relations of capital and labor, and the Republican Tarty recognize the duty of so changing legislation as to afford full protection and the amplest field for capital, and for labor, the cre ation of capital, the largest opportuni ty and a just show of the mutual pro fits of these two great servants of civ ilization. 12. We hold that Congress and the President have only fulfilled an im perative duty iu their measures for the suppression of violent aud treasonable organizations in certain late rebellions and for the protection of the ballot box, and tberefore they are entitled to the thanks of the nation. 13. We denounce the repudiation of the public debts iu any form or disguise.as a national crime; and we witness with pride the reduction of the principal of the debt and of the rates of interest upon the balance, nud confidently ex pect that our excellent national cur rency will he perfected by a speedy re sumption of specie payment. 14. The Republican party is mind fill of obligations to the loyal women of America for their noble devotion to the cause of freedom, and their ad mission to wider fields of usefulness is received with satisfaction, and the honest demand of any class of citizens for additional rights should be treated with respectful consideration. 15. e heartily approve the action of Congress in extending amnesty to thoso lately in rebellion, and rejoice in the growth ot peace and national leeiing throughout the land. 16. The Republican party profess to respect the rights reserved by tho peo ple to themselves as carefully as the powers delegated by them tobtateand to Federal government ; it disapproves of a resort to unconstitutional laws for the purpose of removing evils by interference with rights not surrender ed by the peoplo to either State or JNntionnl government. 17. It is the dutv of General Grant to adopt such measures as will tend to encourage American commerce and slap building. 18. We believe that the modest aud patriotic, the earnest purpose, Bound judgment, practical wisdom, incorrunt- able integrity and illustrious services of U. S. Grant have commended him to the hearts of the American people, and with him at our head we start to-day on a march to victory. From the Butler County Soap Mines. Scar Mixes, May 31, 1872. Ed. llErrBUCAN : Accepting your courteous request extended so long ago to "dish up" something fur your paper, we proceed to comply. The Soap Mines are a myth ; this we have ascertained to our financial injury. We came here to engage in opera tions connected with the mines, hav ing previously provided ourself with elaborate and expensive ruanchinery, manufactured on scientific principles. We sold a vast quantity of soap in the same forms that oil is marketed, "Call," "B. O." "S. O. A P" "Spot" &c. All this, bear in mind, before we had visited the mines. Accordingly, with soap on the brain, but nary' any on our visage for the previous six months, we took our departure from your sweetly slumbering village (we mean no offense) and wended our way hither in quest of Soapderado. Up on arriving in the vicinity where, ac cording to the eminent soapollogists with whom we had consulted, the mines were said to be located, we put up for the night at a farm house. The inmates being very communicative and kind we embraced the first favorable opportunity to introduce our darling project, the soap question. Upon in quiring tho distance to the mines all looked at us in perfect amazement; "Stranger," said the honest farmer, "you are sold, there are no soap mines here." He had rightly judged by our serious manner that wo were iu earn est, and proccedod at some length to dispel our soapy visions. We wilted, slumber was not given to our eyelids that night. As soou as we could hear any of the family astir in tho early morning, we arose aud making a hasty toilet soap minus stepped down stairs where we were kindly saluted by the farmer. We could ob serve a broad grin prevading his coun tenance, but our feelings were such that we could not reciprocate the ex pression, for very good reasons. Were not our anticipations for the speedy accumulation of wealth suddenly dis pelled ? and had we not been egrcgeous ly sold ? Rallying our shattered spir its as well as we could we eutered in to a lively discussion as H. Gree Lee would say, on "what I know about farming." In answer to our inquiry in reference to the averago yield of crops just harvested, he said, " 'Tatcrs, corn and sich didn't do very well, but buckwheat and pumpkins, (whistling) 'whew !' " After partaking of a hearty repast, and giving the farmer a "stand-off" in compensation for hospitality, we came to Parker to meet the parties with whom we had made contracts for future delivery of soap. The time hav ing elepsed they "called" their soap, of course we could not "aute." We had contracted to furnish several thousand tons at a small margin, and the price of soap suddenly advancing when it became known at the "boards" (we mean the wash-boards) that our bubble had busted, we had to furnish the ar ticle or settle the difference; we were compelled to the latter course, and in consequence we are "rubbed out." e have returned to the scene of our departed greatness, and have com menced to bore for oil, and judging by the amount of hard rock we en counter, the fanner was about right, as soap would suggest the idea to us of something soft, but the internal re gions of this country do not verify that theory but we have already in serted more "lye" than we had intend ed. We observe by your paper that there, are quite a number of aspirants for official honors iu your county. Now boys we have this to say, kindly by way of advice. Fight it out "on the square," and don't enter into per sonalities consider it beneath your honor and dignity; also do not allow your tonsorial adornments to becomo erected, t'lercby causing you to assume pugilistic attitudes towards each other. To be continued. II. T. RATtRF.L Factory in Titvsvim.e. We learn from reliable authority that a barrel factory will bo started in side of sixty days. Twenty thousand dollars have already been pledged to wards its construction liv nuteiiln nnr. ties ; and it w ill probably cost from one hundred thousand to one hundred and fifty thousand dollars for its com pletion. There is no branch of manu facture which is more needed, or which will add more ccrtoinly to our mater ial tirosnrritv than n nrnnrrl v nmnbict. ed barrel factory, and no investment which will bo more profitable, safe and permanent. It will increase our local nonulatinn from :i nnn in r nnn tiefn to draw other industries b iuriner swell our numbers. We shall Watch the establishment. if tlinan nrl-i with deep interest.
