In the North American Revirw for April, the scriptural and the legal aspecta of Di vorce are presented respectively by the Rev. Dr. Theodore D. Woolsey, well known for his insistance on the indissolubility of the marriage tie, and by Judge John A. Jame son, a jurist whose long experience with di vorce cases in Chicago, both on the judicial bench and at the bar, lends to his observa tions a very Bpecial value. Dr. P. Bender, a Canadian who has studied to some pur pose the political, social and economic con ditions of his country, under the title, "A Canadian view of Annexation," makes a forcible presentation of the reasons which incline many citizens of the Dominion to regard with favor the idea of absorption by the United States. Senator John A. Logan sets forth the need which exists for "Xa tional Aid to Public Schools" in the several States and territories. The Rev. Dr. How ard Crosby writes of "The Dangerous Classes" that menace the perpetuity of civil order and the peace of the community, meaning the manipulators of corporation stocks and the men who, having amassed enormons wealth, use it for nefarious pur poses, James C Welling, President of Co lumbian University, treats of "Race Educa tion." the problem that confronts the philo sophic statesman, of the presence in our body politic of a strong Xegro contingent. "The Water Supply of Cities" is discussed by Charles F. Wingate, "Ethical Systems" by Prof. F. H. Hedge, "Street Begging" by Rev. Dr. Charles F. Deems, and "Criticism and Christianity" by O. B Frothingham. Published at 30 Lafayette Place, Xew York, and for sale by book-sellers generally. Xoi Affected bt Aoe. Some old speci mens of Royal Baking Powder that had been kept on the shelf of a grocery store for ten years were recently tested by Prof. Schedler of Xew York,' for the purpose of measuring the loss of strength they had undergone. It was found that, although the powder had been exposed to atmospheric changes dur ing all this time for it was not in air-tight cans its loss . of raising power or strength was less than one pr cent., the powder be ing practically, as good as the day it was put up. This is a most valuable quality in a bak ing powder, one which few possess. Most powders if not used plipii first made are found to be ineffective. If kept even a few weeks they lose their leavening power, he come lumpy or caked, and valueless. . This superior keeping quality in the "Royal" arises from the extraordinary care in its manufacture, and the scientific prin cinles employed in its combination. The articles used in its composition are thor oughly dried by beat before being com- 1 pounded, and are so prepared and coated as j to prevent the acCon of the acid upon the alklli prematurely, or except under tle in fluence of beat or water necessarily nsed in cooking or baking. ; The Royal is now' used extensively iu Australia, Africa, and other low latitudes, where it has been found to be the only bak ing powder that will, withstand the hot, moist atmosphere without deterioration.. ly esteemed for his marked probity of; f prosperity is remarkable. character aJ 'dl cultured intellect.
