Coi'FKOTii will look in vain for Republican votes this year. The Greenbackers are going for Adams, lie has therefore only the Demscratic vote to rely upon, and that is sliding away from him, here a little and there a little, until at last it mcst be evi dent to him, that defeat is etaring him ia the face. The decisive Republican victory in the new State of Colorado, on Tues day last, ia a source of large satisfac tion in several points of view, but particularly on account of its merited rebuke to the ecoundrelism control ling the Democratic majority in the present Congress. Ia 1S7C the Re publicans carried that Slate by a majority of S33 for Governor, and SOS for member of Congress, ia a to tal vote of 27,470. Notwithstanding this fact, Judge Cclford, the Repub lican Congressman was f-jocted from Lis seat, and it was given a Demo crat Patterson by a vote of the Democratic members. To that ras cally trantaclion the reply of the peo ple is now given, and Btlford beats Patterson, both of them having been renominated, by three times his form er majority. 15y this election a Unr ted States Senator is also scoured, to succeed CbaflVe, the present Repub lican Senator. State elections are held to day (Tuesday) in Ohio, Indiana and Iowa. In 1874 Ohio went Democratic by seventeen thousand majority. In 1876 IIyes, for President, carried it by seven thousand icur hundred, and last year the Democrats again carried it by twenty twe thousand five hnn dd. This year both parties claim the State by small majorities, but there as elsewhere, the unknown amount of the greenback vote, ren ders the result uncertain-. The prin cipal interest however is felt in the Congressional delegation. Ohio has twenty members of Congress, of whom, at present twelve are Repub licans, and eight are Democrats. Cut the last Legislature, which was Dem ocratic, reapportioned the State, and co gerrymandered it, as to make a Urge majority of the districts Demo cratic. The fraud on the people is so transparent however, that thous ands cf voter 8 have become dicgustcd and the Democrats may not reap any large benefit from it. In Indiana there has been a sharp contest, and the result will largely depend upon the amount of the Greenback vote, and which side it is mostly drawn from. The rctult is mainlf of interest because cf the election cf a U. S. Senator, to Gil the chair of Senator Morton, now tem-; pcrarily occupied by Dan Yoorhccs. ! patriotic Mr. Hay is clamoring for! But further, Mr. Lilly never al Any result in this State will not for-j such an additional issue of them as Icgtd that lierwind was the young prise ns, after its election cf "Liue- jeans Williams." - The Democrats and Greenbackers! As tLe rhymes recite, Meade was on the Rapidan, Gilmore at Charleston, Rut ler at Norfolk, Darnsideat Kooxville, Dahlgren at Sumpter, and Grant at Chattanooga. Money had to be pro cured to sustain their forces, Green backs were the nation's only resource, and Mr.'Yalentioe Hay, then the ed itor cf the Dt'iwrrat, now pcpularly known as "the long tongncd green back orator cf Somerset count y" was gleefully ridiculing Greenbacks as ,'trash" and chuckling over the fact that gold was at "Gfty three" cr in other words a greenback dollar was ; be that they furnished the cash, and worth about sixty-five cents. CVff.-o:h." As Lilly ia Lii testimony bad declared that ho did no; remember the name cf the young rain fur whom ths purchase was made, Mr. Ber- wind's name thus Grst came to light through Ccffroth's friend Fulton, who, not content with denying the charge, Lot be (Bjrwind) or his friouii hid bcu-rbt the eadeuhin, wrote to them, and hiving obtained answers from Berwind and his brother fur warded them to Ccflroth, and the Democrat of last week having pub lished them under the captions of "ANOTHER LIE NAILED," Ac, Ate., tbe matter has thus been brought before the people of this county, and becomes a legitimate sul j?ct cf com ment, nay, forces comment upon us, iu our tuiiorial position. In these letters, E lward, J. Ber- wiud declares tnat be received an appointment as cadet to the Naval School, from Gen. Ccffroth in 1SC5, that at the time, he resided at Sax ten, Bedford County, and had lived there cur;ng the two previous yeare, j and at that time and ever since, his parents resided in Philadelphia; that he graduated ia 1SG0, served nine years in the navy, and was teiired inlS7afjr injuries received ia the performance cf duty at sea, that he cever met or saw Mr. Lilly, and that the charge that money was piid to Ceffroth fur Lis nDminrion as a cadet, ia utteriy gruundiepp, end en tirely false. Mr. Charles F. Brwiud also writes, denying emphatically that money cr ether consideration was ever paid Mr. Ccffroth directly cr indirectly, or to any other person, fur his brother's appointment. Now, as an astute lawyer, which he is, General Coffrotb, iu giving theso letters to the public, knew, that as legal prcof they amountedt i nothing. He might have procured letters from a score cf other relatives cf Beriviud, that they knew of no in ney being paid, and 'a hat would thpy amuunt to, as a contradiction of the sworu testimony cf any man, that money was paid to him ? They did not see it, cr know cf it, but wbat does that amount to? Again, nu one would suppose lLat these two young men, both presumably mere lads at the time, Lad twelve hundred dcllars about their clothes, nor were they charged with payicg money. 0;di ' narily it would be the parents who were anxious to provide for their son, and the fair presumption would is produced from cither cf them. j man to whose friends Le sold the' ; cadetship for CoJroth at least we I ; do not find it in his testimony, a!-1 'thcugb Mr. Fulton and the Tribune j both assume the fact. We thought there wouid ba U') duuger iu commencing to build a ruilroad, ted tbat there was n: pos.iibiii' v cf t railroad ttrike for a lorn; time to c me, but since tbis new so-c:lled Lab.r crganlznion webavebe-ea coti'iled to change cur views, and have therefore post poned further consideration for tbe present. Wi thinks tho oiguniz ilion tettifg up uo'.v is more dangerous than ever tbe railroad strikers were, because it ill not only include ibe railroad strikers but ail classes, by adding the came cf "Grecnbsckers." They c;me out bidder ia their plat term for strikes than ever the rail road strikers did. They put ia their platform that the more machinery tbe employer has tbe less hours and the better pav they will have, so they will compel the employer lo give the laborer tbe benefit of Lis machinery, wLil.i he W3S a: lbs expet.se t. get it and keep it iu repair. If ibis does not imroduca a ist'-iko I do not "know what else v iil. They put in their platform tj abolinh all bws f ir tho collection of cebls. Now, in case ihey should get this accomplished, boi- could we collect iiioLcy t pay our Lauds to work en this railroad? Tbis would stop all railroad huiidif.g at oi:ce, ai.d uil other bufeictss. 1 would like to know where tbe labor er would get woik t'len, if ali hu-i-nei.s is stopped, and it would certain ly stop ali business; it cju'.I uot possi bly be any other way. But the Gneuback strikers ay tLey will give us greenback paper money, ao,d make it a legal tender, when they ouijht to know ibut tha Gjverjmet cannot, uader tbe constitution, give out auy paper money i i time cf peace; so that tit tikes aa end of the I v.iisb talk to run the Government i 1 debt $1,- o00,000,000 more, at:d i--.il it a legal tender. Thv would iak- a tevolu- tioa iu tho whoie United S.-. -, uLtl not calv the North egaii-t the South. Thee Greenbick strikers put in their platform that tbo Government shall put out greenback paper money; they fix the an.ouht at $1,500,000, 000; ibev rrcutuinebd the division cf !it,i, m ,!,, ,t,rf nan .-..ii " j nav u hen he uvs. as-I k ieo out ot thing;'' and then, to assure ibat coa dilion, they would &! iL ui! la for l bo c.'llccii m t f tieiits Tno.sii very words are ia ibeir pbiform.
