1-2 The Central Railroad President. The New York Graphic publishes tlie following interview with the new President pf the New Jersey Central : Beitiir in Philadelphia last week I called on Mr. - C. Knight, President of the New Jersey Central Railroad, who in his quiet but effective way is laboring at the rccuscita (ion of the Central Kailroad. lie said he had on desire originally to take the Presi i ,.lCV but it could not have been well ided. How rauen he lias done with it avo little space of time you can see. in a Vornierly only four trains a day ran to IMiilauelpnia ami none oiiouuuay. anu oniy one train ran to New York from Elizabeth on Sundays. Now there are eight trains daily to Philadelphia and three Sunday, besides three Sunday trains to Pound Brook, Kazubeth, Newark, kc. Mr. Johnston's management tended to maintain a park alonsr the Central line, where Sunday trains could not come. Now it is a railway chiefly. I said to Mr. Knight that there was much difference of sound opinion about the stock of the road. He replied : So I am told. Put I am not engaged in anything beyond restoring this property. Kvery now and then I receive brokers' letters from Wall street asking ny patronage to buy and sell stock. They seem there to entertain the idea that a railroad President ;uust be a stock operator. I never bought or sold a share of stock in Wall street in my life. Perhaps stock that I have held came from Wall street." He said that some of the New York papers seemed to think it politic to attack every recuperative effort made by the Central road, which bad been one of the best accessories of New York and a comfort to its passengers, and added : "If they would only let us alone. Why should it be the aim of a newspaper to de.trov property such times as those." I asked the direct question as an ac quaintance, what brought down the value uf the Central so rapidly, lie replied : "I don't know that I ought to say any thing about that from my standpoint. You can see this view of the matter how ever. Mr. John Taylor Johnston, the 1'reMdent of the road, was a very rich, ac complished and popular man. He bad l.niir un the character of the road. His cuiifidencc in "it was supreme and shared bv he public. He bad l00),OUO of the .stock. $:JOit,000 in pictures and he left everything to the Superintendent in the i . rm i. .... 1 1 . wav ol a rjiis. j. ne nrancucs were uuia in that period to High Bridge and Long Branch. Mr. Johnston left the cost of them to others. They were built expen-j-ivi 1 v some say more than that. Hut Mr. Johnston could borrow half a million d 'll u s at bank with ease. The hard times came along and loans were harder to get; people grew suspicious and began to over haul accounts. It was almost too late to look after details then. And it was im possible to go on advancing dividends out of a private purse and credit, as before. Now see here ! ' Mr. Knight showe-l mo a memorandum f dividends, generally five per cent, semi annually paid by the Central since lh'tlii. It fouted up nearly as much as the whole stock of the road. He said : "Vou will see by this column that had the dividends been eight per cent, a year instead of ten, we should now have three mil ions of cash surplus in our treasur. Had they been six per cent, instead of ten, v? should have seven millions ot dollars. There was too much dividend. I do not ap prove of the policy of paying interest to borrow money to pay large dividends, even if they are earned. This year, before I -came; here, there was $500,000 in dividend? pai l. We are now going to earn some thing before we pay it. The road is popular with its customers ; it is again on good terms with all other corporations. The Lehigh Valley coal and passengers go over it again. We lead to Trenton and Philadelphia. A 1. right year will, I thiuk, put abetter color on our credit." England has scarcely had a snow flake thi.-) winter. The piblic heboid system increases in fSeieticv. MAIUMKL). Jan. 18th, 177, by Pjv. Holt. Pitts. Mr. T. J. Jjonov, of Salem, Wayne cmnty.
