Upon Mr. Buchanan revts tne chief responsibil ity of this unfortunate Mate of things. His is the moral guilt; while the legal re ponsibilty falls upon a man honeat and brave, but too weak to appreciate either the true uature of his offence or the bource of his guilt. There arc thousand and tens of thou sands of Jobu Browns in this country tens of tbouaods who entertained his o pinion., ympatised with hi projects, and ouly wanted the courage aud iutegrity to unite thcmstlves with his crimiual expe dition. There are thomauda iu the North aud thousands in tbe South men who believe thaf'tbe sword of Gideon' should t-e wielded to enforce their wild fancies to propagate aud abolish slavery. Mr uucnanan is ooe ot these men in every practical sense; ana he is the chief offen dtr of all, because a misguided people have placed iu his bauds more weapon of mischief, more power to do harm than any other. His attempt to carry slavery into the midst of a hostile local opinion is of the samo character as that of John Brown to eecure froedom to a people who would have none of it. If it was right in James Buchanan to force slavery upon n people, it was right id John Brown to force freedom upon the South. Thei authority, outs-ido of tho law, was pre aisely the same. It is unfortunate that Mr. Buchanan had not possessed the hot) esty of purpose of poor old Brown. The State Ceutral Committee of the Prople'-i party oset at the St Lawrence Hotul, Philadelphia, on Thursday evening of last week. The News says there was, a- we enderbtand, a fair attendance of the members. A resolution was passed di recting the Chairman of the Committee to i.isue a call for a State Convention to be held at HarrUburg to nominate a can did ate for Governor, and to chooso two Senatorial Delegates to a National Con-i ventiou to be held for tbe purpose of noui inatinc candidates for President and Vice Prcpideut of the United State. The resolution provides, also, that tbe State Convention bbull indicate the time and manner for the choice of llcprcfcn tative Delegates to the National Couveu tion, which are to be elected in the re spective Congressional Districts of the State. The action of the Committee was arrived at, as we learn, after a very in teresting dicuj-sion, which was charac terixed b' the utmost harmony aud good feeling. Mr. Kline, the Chairman of the Committee, it i3 understood, will fix the time for the State Convention -at an early day, so that ouj frieuds throughout the State may commence to prepare for action.
