DLSTILUCTIVR CONVIAURATION.—On Thursday, at a little past 11 o'clock, a. at., fire broke out in the root of the bonne where the bishop and priests mottled with the Cathedral, reside. This house wa built iu the Gothio style, With numerous !milted gables,. dormer windows, and ornaments of arious kinds upon the roofo. The Bishop is, we believe, at present away, but the house has heed occupied by Ilev. McMahon sad others. It is Sant against the northern wall of the Cathedral /Ind in approached from Cherry alley, where t l neently a new wall or fence has been'building, lbut its not yet finished. Tho lot occupied by the Cathedral and the lionse which took fire, fills the tiptoe, bounded by Fifth and Grant streets on the Bast and South, and Cherry and Virgin alley° on the other two sides. The alarm was raised by Br. McCook, who won the first to see the flames, bursting from the roof They Boon spread to alights of the house, which ilia of brick with wooden roots, The arnim±fill condition of the hood 'connected with our co giva rendered thg lank of getting anything like ton adequate supply-of water, exceedingly dill' cult. The etreains pouring throughthe joints • of th e hone and even through the leather to all directions, caused the alreete fit run in rivuletn. When at length the firemen, with almost super. humau efforts of limits and lungs, succeeded in getting their tthattsheenall at work, they speedily. sabdued the flames, though net until the house was ruined internally. The walla, blackened and burned, yet continue staudiog Tho great danger which was apprehended was, that the flames might communicate with the Ca thedral, a massive pile which ornaments the hill and cramp' the place where the Old Cathedral otobd. The walla of that building ere, however, so thick, and IlleTOOf to well covered with slate, that all danger speedily vanished, and are are glad to say that, as far an we are aware, it es caped uninjured. Fortunately the widd favored the safety of the Cathedral, and carried the flames and flying cinders away from it. Connected, with the Ilishople house, in a large and oommoilliins school house, where the clod dren of Catholic parents attend echoed. The fire broke out at tome distance from them, and in a dip:dicta building, but it canned a greed stampede among the children, who fledNaoh with an mat tered' hooker, crying from excitement and fear. The flying cinders from the house alighted on the roof and set fire to it in a great many places, but It was speedily extingulehed and no damage was done to the school house. The new wall fence, elsewhere mentioned, was torn down to give enteatioe more readily to the court in the rear of the Bishop'n house and nchool house. The only building at all. damaged, is the Bishop's residence. All the hooks and furniture were taken out of that, and some of them la a Inidly damaged condition, but the loss in all will not, probably, exceed $5OOO. We speak, of course, according to our own judgement. The insurance on the building lamed is, as we learn, $lOOO The loss most regretted is that of a good part. of Bishop O'Connorla-valua ble library. A part o.( the hooks were' taken out; some were thrown out from a second or third story whitlow. Many of them were tram pled in the mud and as effectually ruined as burned. A leading member of that communion er• pressed yesterday to us his admiration for the efforts and toils of tho firemen and the communi. ty in general, and to check the fire. In those eentimenta be thought all joined with him It la certain that an far as defective hose would permit, the firemen did wonders. As In the origin of the fire, there ie no ques tion. It took fire from a,defective flue near the head of the main staircase.
