SLINPINO IN Cnonon.—A writer in the New York Observer of last week makes the following remark' on this eubjecl: "I have a great sympathy with sleepers. Not that the tendency is one of my Wale, but that I have a few limes in chureh known the pang of that overpowering drowsiness which is jut as irreeistablo as the lull of opium or chloroform upon the eases: But it has boon very eeldom. "Generally the tendency is within our con trol—thal is, of those of nawhe are not ooropell ed to work hard or to carry the labors of the Week almost Into the Sabbath. •If we choose to I 'break the Sabbath on Saturday by creaking ourselves or keeping late hours on Saturday night, of oouree we mast expect to be Weeping is church. But 'whose halt is It , Then with many, Sunday being a leisure day, more time is given to eating and drinking, instead of luting OD the'well known principle that when we oki not work we need leas food. Also, those who real ly desire to avoid being sleepy should take a light meal at twos and more food later in the day, for it to almost impossible to elt down quiet ly after a full meal and keep mind and body awake. "Another soporific is dull preaching. But frequently the fault is as . mach with the hearer as the preacher--a want of interest apparent in the hearer discourages' and throws a pall erg his beet efforts. Still it must be confeued thee° is a 'soothing effect in a monotonous soioe, 'in unvarying tones, which it is hard to resist "But one of the chid causes of drowsiness is in the elate of the atmosphere iu the church. The subject of ventilation IS worn threadbare, and yet it is little understood. To 'seal up a' ream hermetically and confine people in It, is the trim mode—lt Is an economical method of manufacturing carbonic acid gay. Finally Come discover that they coffer from it, and wake up to the importance of ventilation. Le! a lidle le cut 14 the ceiling. 'Oh! how admirably?' our church is ventilated. flow much better I reel.' Certainly, a little betttr, but the chief point, a supply of fresh air, has been quite overloiiked. There is a way of letting the air out, but nO way of letting Ilia A bah suffers to stagnant seater. 'Give me running water,' he says So you cut an outlet to hie pond, bat no inlet. Clther the windows will only open partially or sierely the lower part, eo that those sitting bear are in commoded by draughts. We have had in the papers a moving address to the "eartant: L l' the meetin'.us,' entreating for 'power-are," : sex tone area much abused and long eufferiai race If the church be too hot or too cold, too siet or lontity, nlithe blame Iles with the Berton, But he caneustenanufartnre oxygen to order, Or send It iota an exhausted receiver widtout proper ap paratus. give him 'Judaea opening at toP and bottom for summer, and proper warming.facirb ties eil. in winter, and, for his o we peace, .1,111 do v ' :. ••puenaoes are abused, too, and unjo s idry . : — True, there are some that cannot be too touch spoken against, but they are good and philoso phical, if properly constructed. A full 'ripply of warm air (not heat) is all that le needed, and a church may be as well ventilated with warm air as with cold so that IL be pure and abun dant. If there be a way for it to pass off, when exhausted, the process Is complete. But the us ual construction of furnace* is faulty. Placed in the cellar, the only supply of air to be warm ed often conies from the cellar, and the quantity is limited, as that the air parsing up is over heated-and seems already crotched and exhaust ed before it reaches the people who are to breathe it •There are churches in our city, and every where else, in 'which the only eupply of air is from a small cellar, where a furnace is built, without any communication with the external air. We know of one church where there is air enough, and where a crowded congregation is constantly refreshed by the breath of life. They keep awake. Perhaps they think it is the preacher; perhaps he takes all the glory to him self. Let him try preaching in the black hole of Calcutta, and see if ho deatrree ell the credit." TEM “ARAIIIAN NIGITTA" AT FORIT AND Fora- TSIS.-A Quarterly reviewer thus compares the effect of these Tales upon the man of forty, with the magla charm they exercised on the boy of fourteen: "To see these things—as they were to ua, we must turn back in imagination to the gates of life, and recall the freehnees of our youth. La ter oti in life, the moat unlimited aocumulation of precious atones loses its power of producing an effect, and no reverses of fortune are extraor dinary enough to startle as. The suddenly-re vealed treasures, the gorgeous palaces with doors of sandal wood, fretted ceilings, and jewelled Douches, the high-bosomed virgins, the obedienoo of the genii, sod the state of kings—these things come not near us. We have lost the sublime egotism of our early years, and acknowledge that such eplenditi possessions are too good for us. Pale has already assigned ue our moderate share, and sat with Goole etifficient definiteness the limits of our ambition aid hopes. Who are we, between thirty and forty, that we should pull up a flat stone with a ring is it, and find steps leading toe cavern stored with the precious rarities of an Eastern fancy, or wake is the -eight, and tremble 'with sweet amazement to be. hold the fair paragon of China sleeping by our side" Enough for ue if we sold out before the talt of consols, and if the !tingle partner to whom we limit our admiration of female beauty pro serve a moderato share of those fair proportions and serene disposition with which she adorned the early days of courtship. But there was a time with ue when the 'Arabian Nights' were not so much a story as a dream, when, with the same dim mingling of identities which we some times have in sleep, it le not Aladdin, but our- self, and yet not outwit', but Aladdin, who gazes on the jewel-bearing fruit trees, marries the Sul tan's daughter, and controls the resources 'of the lamp; we suffer and triumph with Sinbad, taste vioiesitude with Cittnawalzantan, enjoy the shrink ing fondness of Mollie, travel upon the en chanted carpet, or mount Ohs flying horse. To read of these things was a sort of intellectual hasheesh—an Intoxicating stimulant to that early -Imagination which does not consciously subdue other things into its own forms, but delights to lose itself in suggestions from without." CROP. AAD {Vedanta firma—The adviess which have reached no during the week, are, without an exception, favorable for corn, and there seems to be little doubt entertained by the agricultural classes, that the crop must be a good one, with favorable weather In September In Illinois, vre are advised, that so sure do the fanners feel at a big crop, that they have already commenced feeding It to bogs. The grass is growing rapidly, and the indications ofexcellent fall pastures are now as favorable ao can be (te ethed. There is no doubt that an ill-fed army does not fight eo well as one which freely partakes of food. Now, the Aus trian army is an ill-fed army. The rations of a soldier in Italy consisted of 1 lb. of beet and a proportional quantity of bread. Neither wine, nor spirits, nor coffee, are part of the bill of fare. If the Austrian soldier wants more than his ration he buys it. This is a fruitful source of disorder. On a march the soldier falls out of his rank to boy cheese or baoon. He must run to resume his place, and he eats in the ranks. lie is obliged no to satisfy his appetite and quench his thirst because the regulation is that he shall cook but ones a day. In Lime of peace the meal is cooked and served at ®ular hour. In time of war, on a march for Instance, Choi cooking takes place in the evening, after the bi vouac is prepared. The meal having been eaten, the soldier lies down, and is not entitled to another for 24 hours. The result of this at Sol. ferino has already been mentioned. The ,oldies ate their dinner on the evening of the 23d, and were not entitled to another until the evening of the 24th. Ia the meanwhile, a battle was to be fought on an empty stomach. Much was said of the hardships endured by English soldiers in the Crimea because their coffee was not roasted and ground for them. The Austrian army get no coffee at all, and receive no rations of spirits or wine. "It is shameful," said Count Rechberg, (a civilian) at Verona. that the Commissariat should not Feed the army better." "The Com missariat is not to blame," was the reply, "it is the system. For 40 years and more the Austrian army has been so fed, and It is only now yen discover that the ration is insufficient." The result of this diecouree was that additional ra tions were served out to the troops, which is very like beginning to train a horse after be has [Oa a race. TUB ADMINISTRATION AND TUI SLAVA TRAM!. —The Pensacola (Florida) 014trorn, noticing the statement, recently a.nonnced, that a cargo of six hundred Africans have been landed on the Florida coast, near Smyrna, says: "The above intelligence, we are assured by Col. E. E. Blackburn, U. S. Marshal, is trite, as he has received letters conveying the same intel ligence and stating these facts. But bow can it be expected that the party violating the law will be arrested when the U. S. Marshal is de nied the power and means of doing so! If this official was vested with sufficient power and pro vided with ample means, (as he applied for to the proper authorities) he would, perhaps, have been able to prevent such violation of law; bat, as it is, with hie limited power and _want of means, it is almost impossible. We further understand that lb° vessel which brought these Africans to our coast, as soon as the landing was effected, was set on fire and abandoned to the elements." This, says the Albany Evening Journal, " is a significant confeseion. United States Marshal Blackburn cannot arrest these Pirates, because the General Government has denied him the power and moans of doing so' The result is that the law is violated with Impunity It has' been apparent from the first that the Adminis tration has no wish to put itself out of the way to prevent or to punish this crime. Where ar rests have been made, the parties arrested have been treated as gingerly as If merely guilty of the most trifling misdemeanor. District Misr ules, Jadges and Juries all apparently conspired together to prove them heroes rather than pi rates, and to secure for them gold medals rather than the gallows." Ala- SPOZOLOS, the London preacher, has re cently received a legacy under peculiar Mecum stances. A lawyer called on him, and informed I him that a hire. IT., lately deceased, had left him a considerable amount by will. The rev erend gentleman thought there must be come mistake, as he knew no each person, but, on in vestigation, turned that it was a fact. lie went to the residence of the testatrix, and actually saw the lady in ber Coffin; he then recollected her as being a constant annoyance to him, many years ago, in the Park-street Chapel, where she had a pow directly opposite to him. She never epoke to him, but was continually watching him, look wherever he would, till he was under the necessity of speaking to some congregational friendeNto persuade her to vacate her pew. From that time to the present he had lout eight of the tally.
