ME!M The Battle of Magenta—Sl• Weeiis of The telegraphic news which reaches America with each eucceseive steamer is generally vague, inexact and blundering, in a preelse ratio with its importance. After pursuing the account, which we this morning publish, of the battle fought at Magenta on the third and fourth of June, and shifting the positive Intelligence from the gossip of London sad Paris, and the 'gatest reports" of pot-house papers, like the London Aderrtissr, with whiotithe telegraph has so oblig ingly favored us, the reader, we think, will be inclined to echo the famous exclamation of Prince 1101 over FaWars tavern bill. The thing is annoying, but perhaps unavoidable, and certain. ly irreparable, at leant till the arrival of the matte now due by the Ocean Queen. Netting aside, however; the !peculation of the British Press as to 'bathed beendone, and who bad done it; and the surmises of the Boulevards as to how many men had killed how many; and the bombehellg of extraordinary news discharged Boot Vienna into the camp of the German Con federation at Frankfort, we can make out clear ly at least four facts of the highest importance That the French army, commanded by the Em peror it person, crossed the Ticino in its march upon Milan on the '2.1 of June: that on the 3d, 4th, and hth Wens it encountered the Austrian army pealed at Magenta to dispute its advance; that a furious conflict followed, the result of which was the retreat of the Austrians southward in the direction of Abbiale Grasso and Pavia; and that Milan having been evacuated by the Austrians, a deputation from that city waited upon Victor Emanuel on the oth of Jnue, in the presence of Napoleon lit., and requested him to tithe poesession of the Capital of Lombardy. These facts, in and of themselves, are abundant ly sufficient to establish the victories of the allied Orme, and hardly need the additional in formation afforded by the splendid distinctions with which General Mac trahon was invested on the battle field by the French Emperor. Upon the probable results of this magnificent triumph it is, perhaps, premature for us to speculate but, in the reported advance of - Garibaldi from Lecco upon Gen. D'Urban's corps, and in the known iltepoeiton of theforee under the command of Prince Napoleon to the south of the Po, there is touch to confirm us in the belief that the French Emperor has resolved to make his cam paign in Italy a campaign of fire as well as of the sword; and that hods nobly hearing out his promise, made to the world, by putting Italy herself forward in every direction as the leading actor in her own deliverance. By the previous arrival of the Europa, the usually well-informed correspondent of the London body .Ysirs, a jour nal which has signalized itself throughout the whole of the pending European crisis by its carnet and impartial advocacy of liberal inter ests and the cause of European freedom, report ed the A usi rians in full retreat across the Ticino on the I.lt of June. Wm report in now fully con firmed nu the 1-et'of June the Fourth French corps or urnwe under Gen Niel occupied Novara, dietant els miles riser and from the bridge of Boffalera, or ewhich the Austrians had passed in force on their invasion of Pied mont just a month before, exulting in the pro.- peel of the speedy plunder of Turin. The des perate attempt, made by the Austrian main body on the let and ;id of June at ralestro, to delay the wimp of the Sesia by the Allies, had rue theded only so far as to allow time for the es cape of a otheiderable portion of the Austrian force in Lombardy, by thethridge of Vigevatio, right miles further down the river thou the bridge of Ctuffalora.. Between Vigevano, and Seat° Ctlende at the emergence of the Ticino, from the Lske Mag giore, the river, which throughout its whole coureeis swift, deep and navigable, is crossed by five bridges, one, which we have called that of Vigeouso, spanning the stream ahontthree miles northeast of that town, on the road between t u sers and Abbiato Grasso; another carrying the direct road from Novara to Milan by . Galliate, across the river a mile from Buffalors, another, about three miles higherup, at Tarbigo; a fourth connecting Oleggio, on the Sardinian side, with Pozzuolo on the Lombard; and a fifth, about two miles below Seeto Caleude, on the way to Som ata. Of these bridges the two northermost were in the power of the Allies by the first of June. The bridges of Buffeters and Turblgo were there fore the points at which the French advance was obliged, on the .d and 3d, to wrest a passage from the Austrians; and at then points the bat tle of Magenta may accordingly be said to have begun. The road from Buffalos passes directly on by way of San Stefano and San Pietro to Milan, a distance of about fifteen miles, through a rich, plain country intersected by numerous canals, this-banks of which are lined with tall Lombardy poplars. Buffslora itself stands, not on the Tic ino as is commonly supposed, but upon one of the widest of these canals, mailed the Sforsesca. Just below Buffalos another Canal, the Cave Langosco, branches from the Iliforzesca and Tuns south to the Naviglio Grande, a great canal which posses from Abbiate Grasso to the capi tal of Lombardy. This canal of Langosco is crossed about three miles south of Buffalos by tine briJge, called the Boole di Magenta, from the town of Magenta, a place of some 4,000 in habitants, lying at a distance of lees than a mile to the east of this bridge, and at about the came distance to the mouth of the town of Marcallo on the road from Buffalos to Milan. This hasty sketch of the topography of the poem) of action Will perhaps enable the reader to form to himself pome ides of the probable oouree of t ito oonfliots of the Sd and 4th of Jane. The Austrians, who are said to have been com manded by Marshal Hess—and the great ability with which their troops must have been handled since the allied advance began, goes far to con firm the assertion—must have been withdrawn in great numbers into Lombardy by the bridge of Vigevano or Abblate Grasso before the fight ing began at the bridges of Buffalora and Datil go. While the contest was going on there, Aus trian troops were rapidly moved up along the Sforxescs and the Langone canals, and by Ma genta, to intercept the advance en Milan should the. Allies succeed in passing the r i rrr That Marshal Hess should have succeeded in bringing his army out of the position into which Count Gyulai had led it, so far as to enable him to un dertake such a daring manoeuvre as this, is a high testimony to his skill as a commander. Brit skillful and daring as his movements seem to have been, those of his Imperial antagonist would appear to have not been less so. That ,the effort to arrest toe allied monarchs failed after two days of the most severe fighting is proved by the evacuation of Milan; that the fighting bad not yet ceased ought to be suffi ciently explained by the consideration that until the Austrians hat either been driven in utter rout into the Nautili° Granule, or had succeeded In petting that rioter between themselves and the Allies, and in so securing their retreat to Pavia, it would bp impossible for the Allies to move with safety upon Milan. The real field of such a battle, as this of Magenta must have been is not the triangle described by the towns of Magenta, liobecco and Belittlers, but the larger triangle of which the Navigllo Grande Is the base line and which is described between Milan, Abblate Grasso, and Buffalorn. Whether the Austrians should be suffered to fall batik in safety upon Pavia itself, even after passing the base lino of this triangle, would de pend, of course, upon the comparative strength of their army with that of the Allies actually io Lombardy, as well as upon the movements of the French reserve in Aleseandris and Casale, and also upon the actual extent of the insurree. Gone in Lombardy. Upon the effect of such a victory as this of Magenta, followed up by the triumphant entry of Victor Emanuel and Napo. lean 111. into Milan, .in rousing not Lombardy I alone, but all Northern and Central Italy into 'fiery revolution, the allied Commanders may well r ty with confidence. They are UM light ing th,,ltallau magazine on army Oda of the ft^ Aka forces, rad it is by no menus clear that the fortified square of the Adige itself will long afford a refuge for the Imperial dominion of Austria, from the reduplicated exploalorie that now menace her power. Upon the rest of Europe the progress of the liberating armies le likely to exert a wholesome influence in crushing any disposition that may exist toward generalizing the war. The Queen of England, if she has said nothing else In her speech, from the throne, has at least re-affirmed her resolution not to interfere in the Italian contest, while the Czar hue at last spo ken out Ms mind with unmistakeable emphasis to the lesser German courts by declaring that shoultlthey meddle in realism, Russia will con sider the "equilibrium of Europe" as endangered, and herself of come as at liberty to restore the balance with her 'weighty sword. To have urged' matters on to this point within six weeks time of the opening , of the contest, to a triumph of skill, foresight, end energy on the part of the French-Emperor for which his warm cat admirers can hardly have been prepared. N. Y. nines. =al BILITAIN.—Ia the House of Lords the address in reply to the Queen's speech was moved by Earl Pewit!, and seconded by Lord Gifford. The conduct of the Government, both in their domestic and foreign relations, was de nounced by Lord Granville and others; but after the speeches in defense by the Earl of Mistimes bury and the Earl of Derby / the address was agreed to. In the Commons, the address to the Crown was moved by Mr. Egerton, and seconded by Sir .1. Elphinstone. The Marquis of Dunnington moved an amendment to the effect that the present Ministry does not possess the confidence of the House. Ile reprehended the conduct of the Gov ernment on the Reform question. Mr. Ilanbury seconded the amendment. Mr. Disraeli defended the course of the : Government, and stated that the Reform question would be postponed till the next session, and that the foreign policy of the Government would be peace. He called for an immediate division. The question was about to be put, but the Opposition was not prepared to vote; and after speeches by Lord Palmerston and others, Mr. Disraeli consented to adjourn the debate till the I I th. A conference of the Liberal party wne held in London on the the 4th, in the street, pursuant to a call issued by Lords Palmerston and John Russell and other prominent men. Upward of two hundred and fifty members of Parliament ere stated to have been present, and the pro ceedings were on the whole harmonious. Kossuth was leaving England for Italy on the 7th inst. Ile had an interview with the Preach Emhaccador in London. Homo three hundred Hungarians who had returned from America were to follow him to Italy. It was announced that Prince Paul Esterhazy had arrived in London on a diplomatic mission from Austria, but the Herald states authoratively that the report is entirely without foundation. The sudden death of Mr. Pierce. a leading member of Christy's Minstrels, now performing in London, is announced. TITZ TALKING Fon.- .This curious and inter esting animal is now on exhibition in Piccadil ly. Its "talking" is limited to two words, "Mamma," and " Papa," which it pronounces pretty distinctly; but of the merit of its perfor mances there can be no doubt. At the word of command it will turn over and over, shake hands, fold its hands, kiss its keeper, and perform va rious manceuvres. It is well worth seeing. Mr. Buckland, of the Second Life Guards, writing to us, says '• Though no '•fish," this creature is as fine a specimen of seat as naturalists often base the plea sure of seeing alive in London, and when quiet in its tub we have a good opportunity of remark ing many curious points In its anatomy ; the wedge shaped bead; the largo expanded eyes, to enable it to see under water; its shovel shaped mouth, forming a capital fish trap; its formida ble array of sharp, lancet shaped teeth; its pe culiar and beautiful shaped nostrils, each sur rounded with a powerful orbicular muscle; 'to whiskers, stiff, hard, bristle like hairs, which as we learn from a preparation in the college, are rendered acutely sensitive by having a large bulb of nervous matter at the end of each, and which, in all probability, serves the purpose of feelers when deep down, 1311 t of sunlight, among the rooks, hunting for finny prey: its peculiar fine-like band, with which its amazing facilities for swimming in the water, a power produced by the combination of many beautiful adapta tions of true mammalian limbs to a life destined to be spent amid the stormy waves. of the snit ocean."—London paper. latintllancous J.
