THOUGHTS" PROM 11.TelSPIT MOSS or run KR, mono seems to me as if all the things which are in Nature cannot change, and are just as they were left by God's hand ; no that in them I seem to get nearer to God than when I am among men, who hare changed so touch tram what God made them." alwnys feel in the spring of the year no I used to feel when I was a boy, and my father hod been away on a joarney and came home again, and I eaw his trunk opened and saw all the nice things which he had brought for all the household. So now, when the earth is covered again with leaves and flowers, it seems to me as if God had been away all lam winter, and now had come back again with all treasures and gifts 'of love for all his children." "The history of the world has shown a series of great currents, which have not only not moved in the way in which thiogs seemed to look at any time, but in many ways they have borne and dashed right up against the things which were powerful and etrong." "I am puzzled continually to know bow to ex plain to my children the things which to me ere perfectly plain end simple. My little boy conics to me and asks me to explain to him what is !neon/ by a. bill of exchange, ore letter of credit on Paris ; and I have to go bank and go hack until I come to some ground where I can talk to hire, so that he can understand, and then, step by step, I bring the explanation up to the end, and when I have got through, he looks enbinie sire, as boy's do when they don't quite like to say r 'I have not understood a word of all you have been Baying.' So, if we were to come to God and ask Him to explain to us what is Ilia Special Providence, there would be a thousand things which we shorild have to learn before we oeiild understand it." llow many thousand stitches are there in a garment ! DI.TIIE99INii CASUALTY. distressing casualty occurred yesterday forenoon, by which a young lad, 1... in of Mr. Ileury Baru a, editor and propri etor of the Doily Tribunt,i lost his life. The-ladder was close to the wall, and nearly under Band touch ing the wall won a bench, upon which be stood and arranged the strap. The tongueof the buckle was turned back under the loop, so that it could not interfere with its sliding freely, and the length of the strap was such that he could just get his head into the noose, and, after dropping, hang three or four inches above the floor. Ile undoubtedly intended to swing himself off the bench, and when he had hung long enough, step upon it agniu, and by the aid of the ladder draw' himself into a perpendicular position. lie was simply mistaken in the effect of the operation, as, the moment the noose lightened with his weight so no to cause suffocation nod stop the circulation of the blood, every nerve was wal ked and the whole body rendered helpless. "You sure ly ought to be better bred and too well inform ed," continue the Austrians, "to use uncivil epi thets. Kou know right well, for it has been the practice time Immemorial, that ageneral always endeavors to quarter hie army on the enemy, where practicable. Pray speak the language &usage. Do not be rude or vulgar, phial' would bespeak ignorance. You know that Anuses (or Generals) never 'rob,' (vile phrase!) they only 'levy contributions.' " It is evident from this calm reply that the Piedmont's(' took an erroneous view of the pro ceedings of the Austrians who are only acting strictly en Reale. The Piedmontese will no doubt apologize for the universal mistake they Made in representing or recognizing the Anstrians as '•robbers" and "plant:toren" in carrying off from the portion() of Piedmont that they have entered everything they could lay their hands on. In the skirmishes that have taken place in ef fecting and resisting those "Levies," several poor fellows were killed stone dead. Many more had their arms and lege shot off or were other wise fearfully contused, lacerated or punctured. I speak of them with pity because of the shab biness and insignificance of the affairs in which they were killed or mutilated. History (and I assume lobe au historian for the nonce) bas no consideration for men who allow themselves to be shot through the heart, or have their skulls cloven, - or their longs traversed by anything un. deeervlng the name of a bullet, and yet, the per sonal effects to the vietimsare precisely the same if killed or wounded in a scrimmage or a general engagement. In either case, however, those cas ualties occur in the field of honor! How consol atory. Bo not in a hurry; Be shall have pitched bat tles, and we shall have the spectacle presented to us in "our own" or other "correspondence" of tens of thousands of the fmeet men in Europe blown or cot to pieces, the majority of them ly ing bleeding and in agony, and their wounds fes tering for days ere their time come to be vielted by the much occupied surgeon. I mean these of them not crushed to mummy in the interim by charges of covrary, caanon, or military equipages over their unfortunate limbs or bodice.—Cor. of the hi P. Courier. A bog letter from the Hoe. J. M. Nearly two generations have passed away, since, on the 4th of June, 1800, nine thousand French soldiers, advancing from the Stradella, met at the villages of Casteggio and Montebello, the outposts of an Austrian army eighteen thousand strong, under the orders of Ott and O'Reilly. To the advan tage of numbers the Austrian forces, joined that of position, occupying as they did the hamlets of Casteggio and Montebello,on a broken ground, and made defensible by the solid character of the Piedmenteee village architecture. In the rear of the Austrian forces, too, was the army of hlelae, holding Alessandria; and the men who were commissioned to crush the conscripts of Lances, were the same, as Thiers observes, who had besieged Mamma& in Genoa, had been form ed by him to encounter the rudest shocks, and had just forced him to surrender. They were assisted leo by a numerous artillery, and dis played in the action, which lasted nine weary hours (from eleven in the morning to eight in the even ing,) more than their usual bravery. So terri ble indeed was the fire of the Austrian artillery, that Unties, describing ite effect upon his ranks, compared the "noise made by the shattering of the bones of his men to the crashing of glass In a hail-storm." Bat neither the weight of num bers, nor the strength of a formidable position, nor the Impulse of a reoent victory, nor the su periority of their artillery, nor their undaunted bravery, enabled the Austrian forces in 1800 to make their way through the indomitable soldi ery of Lannes; and General Bonaparte, coming to the field at the end of the action, found the French army in a transport with their success. The campaign of Italy had been opened with a glorious triumph, and, Marengo was to confirm, within a fortnight, the verdict of Montebello. We recall these particulars of this famous battle that our readers may realize for themselves how vitally important, in its moral influence upon both parties to the strife, in its lessons of enthu siasm to the conquerors, and in its lessons of discouragement to the defeated,. this revival, af ter so great a lapse of time, of the prestige of Montebello is likely to prove, at the beginning of a new Italian campaign, between the troope of Austria and the troops of France. The second victory of Montebello Is, iu this respect, especi ly inspiring to the army of Napoleon 111., that it has been won under conditions virtually the reverse of those under which the Conscripts of the Republic achieved their triumph. It is not a repetition, but rather a confirmation, of the earlier success. In 1800 the French, with an inferior force, assailed the Austrians and routed them utterly. In 1859 the French, with an infe rior force, are aasalled by the Austrians, and beat them off with a loss of two to ono. Is 1800 Austriaheld Alessandria, Genoa, Tortona, Vogh era, and was striving to push her way into Lom bardy, the French, under General Bonaparte, holding Piacenza, Cremona, and the line of the Po. In 1859 France holds Alessandria, Genoa, Voghero, and the line of the river Staffers, end defies the Austrian army, mistress of Piacenza, Cremona, Pavia and the Po.—A". F. Times. AT Detroit recently, an ox was killed because he could not understand the French language. The team, consisting of one English and one French ox, drawing a heavy load and driven by a French driver, was crossing the !rook when the express train made its appearance. The French ox understood him, and turning off the — rrask; - saved himself, but the English ox, never hating studied the language. pressed fur ther on, and was instantly killed.
