TIIE CARE Or MANUEL MASON—ConoMfion of a Jfan for Harboring hia Own Mild.— irruhingion, .Vag 24, 1859.-1 have alluded once or twice to the hard case of Manuel Mosen,.a colored man, in Washington. Tho case has just been opened afresh to me by responsible parties, and I have gathered the following facts, which are so startling that I venture to send them to you at the risk of tiring your mod em with the case. Let me premise by saying that the facto can be proven In any decent court. Said Manuel Mason and his wife were the elaves of a white woman, living a few miles oat of the pity. A few years ago Manuel was taken etch with inflammatory rhenmatism, and was given up by the doctors ea incurable. Under the dream 'latices his mistress offered to self him for $3OO, ho to pay her in inetalments. He accepted the offer, and paid off the entire sum in due course of time. He partially recovered his health and hired the time of his wife for so much a year, that oho might keep house for him in Washing ton. They raised a large number of children at their own expense, bat Invariably at about the age of tea years the mistreat, took away each child and sold it off or appropriated l it to her own use. At last only one child was left—"little Ben." He was, like all ynungest children, a favorite-- the baby, the oomfort of the old man sari woman. In September last one of our new ;Mike ap proached the small dwelling of Manuel Mason in search of " little Ben," for the last child must be taken to minister to the, voracious appetite of the monster, Slavery. Benjamin was missing, however. The father never had him in his power or possession for one moment, yet he was suddenly arrested for "harboring a slave!" The law dates 1707 under which ho was taken, and the literal penalty is "one hundred pounds of tobacco per hour" for each hour of harboring a slave. You will perceive that the father was simply guilty of not finding his runaway boy. The officer told Mason to hunt up his boy, and upon his neglecting to•do this he was thrown in to jail. Althoughoso evidence was offered against him, yet the Justice would not let Mason out on any less bail than $1,600, which was furnished by a kind hearted citizen of the district. A jury very quickly brought in a verdict of guilty, though with no more evidence of guilt than is to be found in this letter. Mason was remanded to jail, where for days he lay without a bed, and all the time with scant clothing. He lay in jail forty-nine days before Judge Crawford would deign to sentence him. The sentence was to pay a fine of SIP; 65; being $1 66 "for every hour the slave was harbored: one-half of said amount to go to the ueo of the owner of the slave, and the other half to the United States." I quota from the Judge's sentence as reported in the Na tional Intelligeocer. Mason was also sentenced to lay all costs, and to remain in jail till the en tire sum was paid. The District Attorney was at last prevailed upon to consent, npou ample ...security, that the money will be paid at the end of three moot, to let the-peer negro go, and be is at liberty once more. In the meantime a Petition is circulating askio tha President to remit the One; but without holiesw of hope for fleece:, If any one at t - th wishes to help Mason and freedom, the Era Rice will receive apply any ouch moneys. AA iNt 11 , 1 ,r.—A gentleman related In our hearing th.. I..ltowing incident that occurred a short time 'g, in Cincinnati. lie said ho was coming dorri, from Mt. Auburn, with a friend, one evening Into the city, and when about half way down toe hill, they saw a poor ragged and mi.leruhle I . 1,,,g African, who seemed almost worn out . traveling. coming up the hill. When they 4, Tricached him he stopped them, and inquired if they knew a person of a certain name, who lived there. Just as he asked the question a blustering Mississippian, who was coming down the hill behind them, came up and etopped, Ile looked at the negro a moment and mud, "Yon are a runaway, and had better go back to your master. You'll be better treated there than you will ever be here. I'll kayo you taken up sea runaway." The MiseLseipplan was very much. exalted. The poor negro looked at j him a moment, then pulling off his old ragged jacket, he turned his back to the Mississippian end said, "Yes, Massa, lis a runaway, dere is de kind of treatment I have received from my mesas." The gentleman said the negro'e back was covered with scars from the lash, and there were yet great raw sores, out of which the blood was running. The Mississippian looked at the lacerated back of this victim of past slavery, then ripped out a most horrible oath against the man that inflicted these bloody stripes on the negro'e back. He put his hAnd into his pocket . iitlif.ellifOlsargold piece, with tears in his eyes, "Here, take it—go on your road to freedom, and may God blase you." The Mississippian remarked to the gentlemen that "he did not wonder at the people in tho North opposing the institution of slavery, when -, such sights as these were exhibited to them," , then passed on - -doubtless • wiser man. The gentleman further said that the poor negro found his way to Canada, and is now what the Al mighty designed him to be—a free man.—Ckr mon/ (0.) Courier, --..----•-•--- - - AN INCIDENT Or Tile MIENICAII WAlL—Capt. Thomae F. Marshall (the whilota temperance lecturer) was in the habit of coming on parade in a state quite subversive of all discipline and army rules. Captain Clay, though the strictest of all the captains in obeying ancirequiring obe dience, determined to give Marshall a hint of his disapproval. So, as soon - aa.he_i i cer of the day," whet, his comman was th stains -offi e highest, next to that of the Colonel, he d flounced his military dress, and, riding up to the guard house, he cried out with a lend voice, "Officer of the guard!" When the guard officer appeared, ,he 1.11,1 "I command you to empty the guard house of all the prisoners; so long as I have command of this regiment, no soldier shall be punished while captains are allowed to violate the rules of war with impunity." The guard house was emptied, and expectation was on tip toe to ace the lame of this flagrant brch of duty. Bat no notice was taken of the a air by 1, 7 the Colonel. At the next encampment the fa mous quarrel took place in the prawn of the whole regiment, between Captains Cay and Thomae F. Marshall. Clay proposed to fight . 1 Marshall on the epot with broad ewo de, but Marshall pleaded that It would embroil e whole regiment. Thereupon Clay most bitter' replied that "Marshall, at Lexington, did no fear to provoke, by the moat Inflammatory app ale, au affray, when women and children were in dan ger, and Clay himself overpowerg by uperior forte, bed here, when they meta% eq terms, where men wore swords and war was he pro fession of all, he feared to embroil others; Such a plea was the refuge of a poltroon and an seam sin !" The next day Marshall tried to drown himself in the San Juan river. Snob was Cassius M. Clay's revenge upon the leader of the Lex , Levan mob of 1846.—/V. F. Poe. _ TIM lIRDICEGROVAD RAILIIOAD.-IVO learn that Garret L. Voorhies, Esq., of Maury, lost a val uable woman and her two children, a short time since, though the agency, it may be, of the un derground railroad. Oar information states that the woman, whose color by no means indicated the presence of African blood in her veins, ob tained of her master permission to visit her mother in Franklin; that she came to that place on Saturday evening, and the next morning purchased & first clams ticket at the office of the Tennessee and Alabama Railroad, the ticket agent having no suspicion that she-was a slave; that on reaching this city, she took passage Im mediately on one of the Cumberland river boats for Cairo, from which place she went to Chicago by way of the Illinois Central Railroad, and thence on to Canada. Having reached that "city of refuge" for the deluded victims of Republican philanthropy, she wrote to some one in Maury, announcing her safe arrival. Our informant states further, that It b under and that lilr. Voorhies will Instill& a suit Araluat the Tenneeeee and Alabama Railroad for $3,000, the sum at which he valued the girl and her ohlldrea,—Nalieflle raffia, 2 ; 4 t. . A Persian Pui.--One of oar western farmers being very much annoyedby his best sow break ing into the corn field, search was instituted ••p vain fora hole in the rail fence. Falling to find any, attempt was next made to drive out the animal by the way oho entered; but of course without success. The owner resolved to watch herproceedings, and posting himself at night in a fence corner, he saw her enter at ono end of a hollow log, outside the field, and emerge at the ' other end, within the enclosure. "I have you now, old lady," cried ho. Accordingly he pro ceeded, after turning her out once, more, to so place the log (it being very crooked) that both ends opened on the outside of the field. The next day the animal entered at her accustomed place, and shortly emerged again. Her aston ishment, says our informant, at finding herself in the same place whence she started, Is too lu dicrous to be described ! She looked this way and then that, granted her dissatisfaction, and finally returned to the original starting place, and after a deliberate survey of things to satisfy herself that all was right, again entered the log. On emerging once more on the Wrong, aide, evinced even more surprise than before; and turning about retraced the log in tite•opposite direction. Finding this effort alike in vain, after looking long and attentively at the position of things, with a short angry grunt of disappoint ment, and perhaps fear, she turned short around .and started off in a brisk run; nor could either coaxing or driving ever induce her to visit that part of the field. She seemed to have a "impel-. stition" concerning the spot. Tire appended "notice," which actually ap• pears among the advertisements in the James town (Chautauqua Co.) Journal, beats any exhi bition of Young Americanism In Punch: Normx.—Whereas my father, Newton Salis bury, has forbid me his bed and board, for the reason I visited and assisted at my sister's house during her husband's sickness and death there fore, I forbid his harboring any other Nu:in my stead. =MI •, -10 oo .................. „JR 00 Gerry,April 16, 1$&).
