EM=I • R.'I32.RETT' xi/treykis and - PROPRIETORS PITTE3,I3 - C.R.C1,13 TUUESDAY MORNING, 812,1" 26, 1869 Tug int& to Pikes Peak of thousands of anx lOW and inexperienced seekers after gold, and the final denouement of that monstrous humbug are a sad commentary on the "make haste to be rich" propensities of the people of this young Republic. Young and hardy men a few months ago left comfortable homes in whole battallions In tha expectation of acquiring a fortune in a . yaar, from the prolific mince. They entered upon the "trip" withouteven ordinarypreparation, and wit* to encounter a journey of seven ~• hundred miles through what is literally a "havil. • Ing. w Mermen," without even a limited supply of clothing or food. Now they are coming back ,disappointed and indignant, the mere wrecks of their former selves, or their bones are bleaching in the solitary tracks of the plains—victims to their own lust for gain, and the dopes of de . Itigninganci unprincipled apenlatore. The story is indeed a sad one;. and forcibly appeals to the tenderest - sympathies of the public, It conveys lesson which should be heeded by all olassesin this country, who may yet, In their turn, become the victims of a elmilar delusion. It is thus ap plied by the Philadelphia ;Enquirer in the sena- , ble remarks which are herewith inserted: "The emigrants to Pike's Peak, it is reported, _bare been mildly dispirited by. the discovery that then , hardships were too great to enable them to delve for gold in that distant region. They went out upon a cow soil to look for the sudden means of • wealth where the barriers of nature—the lest, of winter—lmpeded their labors and frus trated their hoped. They forgot that H not a partiole of the precious ore was beneath their feet, there was soil therethat, under but a moiety of the labor usod by miners, would have yielded them an ample return for their enterprise. Fired by the enthusiasm' of ignorance, they sought what ehould be deemed only a fortuitous boon, more than a reward for toil—an undue proportion of gain for mere manual application. In this earth it is the lot of few pereone, and those notes be envied, to derive great wealth without undergoing the ordeal by which nature has established it shall be acquired, and of those who have taken out the largest amount of gold la Calibrate and Australia a small proportion • oulyatie riot'. A very great number of them are miserably poor, and are but the slaves of hope in the realms of the yellow monarch. "There is something more required of man than merely to moor. to -the earth and become rich. Industry being the beat of all blessings, the common law of nature demands that man shall bless himself by his own acts. When be falls tocielt himself he becomes a wretch al. most too Indolent to despise his want of energy. - The curse, as it to called in Genesis, which at. fixes to man the destiny that by the sweat of his brow he shall eat hie bread, is only_ so to him who translates that lobe evil which Is a divine inheritance of his being—and were we to blot from the world at this hour all the mental, mo ral and physical exertion thlit contributes so much to the happiness of the human family,' what a deplorable change would ensue from the: erasure of that necessity of existence against which we so vainly and ignorantly struggle PAP/It entitled the Cavalier has been ushered into sziatence in Baltimore, and-as every jour eel in these exciting times has its "minion," this one devotes itself to the maintenance and promulgation of the celebrated "Monroe doe , trine," as understood by certain fast politicians in and around Washington. The Corafirr is for playing bob with everybody and everything not pariily American on this continent. But we will let it speak for itself: The Cavalier la intended to be the sentinel to guard, with a martial eye, the territorial Inter ests of the Republican 'Empire; to express its opinions freely on all topics, and especially those 'of a military character. It will advocate the Americanization of our Mater States on the ground that our laws, Institntions and order are absolutely essential for the development of Christian and democratic civilization. We would see our common schools on every bill in . 1- Mexico; we would hear our iron horse scream ing along her valleys; we would hear the clank • ':'et.our printing preen in every city and village ; ".i.r..itta would gee her people our people, our laws '..'their laws, her interests our Intereetv. We would .-;'Mash out intestine war, and plant our peaceful energy everywhere in that moot favored of lands. - If the Cuban Creoles desire our liberty, we would coy unto them, Rise as one man, and we will arm and assist you; to the Central Ameri can States, You can end must have our energy and enterprise, our laws and our civilization and then we would see the great people of the Rotted States demanding of our Government w attic adherence to the Monroe doctrine on one hand and the great American doctrine of !stol id= on the other. The editor wary considerately concedes' the possibility of.laie not tiring to see hie good wish es realised. Some of them, he thinks, may re quire the lapse of another generation, if not two, in their consimmation. It predicts -that in 1862 the Sikhs shall arise, exterminate the children of Christ, keep English women In their images, sod restore the supreme power of the Kbalso. That is a very pleasant little pre diction, end one which the Sikh very often thinks himself competent to realize. STARTLING !WORT roost iuc PLAINIL-,11 let ler dated Pacific City, lowa, (a point on the Mir eisalppi river opposite Nutmeat]; N. T.) writ ten on Monday last, the 16th, woe received in this City yesterday, reports two terrible colli eione on the Plains in the neighborhood of O'Fal len'e Bluffs, between Rome half starved return ing Pike's Peakers and two outward bound trains the one in charge of the well known Mr. D. C. Oaks, and the other of the banker, Mr. L. Nuck olls. The report se the letter reads, was just received at Pacific City on the morning the let ter was written. The train of Oaks and company were most fiercely attacked by the gangs of desperate and starved emigrants, and was finally captured, and the wagons after being rifled of their contents were burned. In the fight Mr. °eke was killed. The company under Mr. Nuckolll was also fiercely assailed and driven away from their wagons. In the melee Mr. Griffiths, who was then on his way out to take charge of his office, fell Into the bands of the desperadoes and was hung. Thum are the statements of the letter and we give them for what they ore worth. The letter also mentions that the returning emigrants are arriving at Pacido City daily by score,,in the most deplorable condition of want an starva tion, and exceedingly desperate and enraged at the Missouri River towns for the deceptions which, they assert, have been practised upon 'them. In view of these circumstances the re ports above given are not at all improbable.—St. Louis Dem. KOESCII— HUNGAILY—AUSTILL—A, report Is current that Koseuth ie now in Sardinia and in communication with the Hungarian troops in the Austrian army. A letter in one of the Ger man papers farther Mates that much agitation prevails in Hungary, and that revolutionary movements are anticipated. Something of the kind in also hinted at in the correspondence of come of the English journals, and putting these facts together, some journalists etart the plaus ible theory that the discovery of disaffection among the Hungarian troops, who form a large proportion of the Austrian army now in Sardin ia,ds the real cause of hesitation, counter-march ing, and almost retreat of the Austrian forcee since they entered Piedmont. It is also said that there is dimension between the Austrian and Hungarian generals of that army. It seems probable that Austria will have her hands full, and will yet rue theday ehe took up arms against Sardinia. COON!
