From rho Undo, Times, May Eth.] Auntria appeare willing to let the world believe that if she was precipitate in her diplomacy ebe will make amends (mooch unaccustomed prompt. itude by being very deliberate in her strategy. When she astonished Europe and eheaked grave, Innocent and trusting statesmen by decisive action, at a moment when abo was thought to be waiting patiently the peatefca Bandon of all her difficulties; when she appeared with that sudden menace, that three day's pause, and that prompt act of war, we all believed that eh° had resolved to seize a quickly passing opportunity for striking a decisive blow. She had 190,000 men in Lombardy and Venice, whereof 1110,000 were drawn up almost on the banks of the fron• tier river Ticino. The general - of that army, as be looked across the little river, could almost survey the scene of Ma future operations. nu his right, rolling away in the distance, rice the peaks of the Graian and Pennine Alps; on the left the leaser altitude. of Alontferrat and the summit of Mont Appeal:line mark the highland character of the country into which he was about to advance. But between these two northern and southern dietricts, stretching straight before him like an irregular bay which spreads its rippling eurface deep Into a rocky region, extends a long vista of flat country. Through the middle of it winner the Po, so renowned in rang and history; and from north and from south, from the Alps on the right hand, and from the Apennine range on the left hand, and from these distant Cottisto Alps that close the vista and shut out France, descend little rivers, each bringing its tribute from he own mountain—little shining ribs that articulate to the backbone of Piedmont. In those mountainous districts to the left lie tLe faetnesesise of the Sardinians. The great for• tress of Aleesandria standsalmoet et the entrance to the Mootferrat country, and over the high hills and on the margin of the Sea lies Genoa The hills to the right—those uplands which swell away towards the (replier mountains of the Simplon, Mount Roes, end the Grand St. Bernard—aro for the most part undefended by art, and straight away before him, up that flat alluvial plain, our Austrian General can yea no place capable of an hunt's defense. The great river winds about, the tribulariee stream down into it from right and from left. There are lit tle indefensible towns like hievare, Alortaia, and l'ercelli, the three points of II triangle; but there is nothing serious between him and Turin, which lies away up at the- top of this deep lowland level All Europe thought this was Austria's object; that bold in her great preponderance of force, she would with a strong army mask the fortresses of Aleesandria and Casale, and all that southern mountain district which they cunt , maul, and that ehe would, with the remainder of the force, rush straight forward—never stop ping till she reached the Royal Palace at Turin. Thete would be some prestige of arms in occupy ! ing the enemy's capital at the outset of the war, ' and there would be obviously sonic etrategic advantage in being in a position to destroy that uetwork of vailway it which now pule the French who laud at Genoa la direct and immediate com• , euutticlitiou with the French who crass Mount Cenis and attain the Piedmontese aide at Seen Master of Turin, and of the railways that centre I at Turin, the Austrian General would have di vided two French armies, and would have been in Recur° possession of all Sardinia, except only that mountainous Montferral region which we bare euppoued him la survey:ins lying on his left, , while meditating his advance across the Ticino 1 This road upon Turin wan thought to he an oh- ! jest eo material to the successful opening of the game before her that Atistrinwea believedto have acted wisely even In incurring some moral odium while eeenring so important a physical advan tage BM fur some reaspri iitostber, which le prubahly a nary Roan milli ..sun, brit which leesens our idea a she nectel v of her diplo midi° precipitancy, Auntria litO „ taken na advan tage of her priority In point time, or of her superiority in point of force. Wo are not in a contlitiun to divine motives ur to criticise strategy, for the despatches are'not very explanatory, and the knowledge voncheated to us by the military authorities is not not very perfect, tut wit can see that, after being seven days on Sardinian eoll, the invaders have not yet advanced more than 35 miles from the fron tier river. of the division which crossed th'e Ticino, and which appeared to be intended to march up the level upon Turin, we can trace the movements with some certainty. They have diverged rather southwards of their direct route; that is to say, they are tending towards the foot of the Montterrat range, rather than towards the I foot of the Alpine hills. In this advance they fiod.one of the windings of the Po in their path I and on Wednesday evening they crossed the riser at nimbi°. The point chosen for this pee sage was near the town of Sala, nod perhaps In dicates an attack on Alessandria. Higher up the river, at Fraseinnetto close to Casale, a for two) capable of some resistance, another body of Austrians seems to have attempted to cross the stream, after a canonade which lathed fifteen hours, bat were repulsed with some loss. What can be the object of these operations" If the Austrian had kept the northern bank of the river it would have taken him to Turin. But to proceed by this route the Austrian must crone the Dora—a little river which comes down from the Allot, and, flowing through the level country In front of Turbo, falls Into the Po. The banks of this river are said to have been fortified, and It was thought that these lines had been chosen as the battle field on whicih France and Sardinia profiting by the sluggishness of the Austrian, had determined to draw together and fight a bat tle for Turin. By crossing the Pu the invading divieion, whose advance we are now tracing, ban turned that position altogether; for they are now on the south bank, and the Dora comes down Into the Po from the north. The object of at lark, however, is unite doubtful. They may be either proceeding towards Turin by the most direct route, or they may be about, by the simple =metiers of "right shoulder for ward" to turn to the left, and advance upon Al essandria. If it be true that an Austrian can nonade was commenced at Valence, it would ap pear, perhaps, more probable that the fortresses are the object of attack, for Valenta is within a few miles of Alessandria, and the Austrian re serves, which are said to be in great force at Pavia and Piaoetiza, are well placed for taking part in a concerted attack upon Alessandria, or even for descending upon Genoa. Thus have we traced the progress of one division, which took the plain country, and was at the last ad. vices crossing the Po at a point not above lea miles distant from the great fortress of Alessan d rift. There is, however, another division of the in vading army which, instead of crossing the Ticino, went up north to the lake whence the Ticino flows, and crossing that lake penetrated into the northern and Alpine districts of the kingdom they Invaded. Distant from railroads and telegraph wires, the movements of this force aro as yet obscure. We expected to find them coming down Into the level country some where about the lies of the Dora, and forming &junction there with the force advancing di• rectly through the plain ; but, as them have now crossed the Po, and tend to the South, we must expect that the Junction will be attempted at some other point. On the whole It would seem that the Austrians have gained nothing at pres- ' cot by their choice of the moment, and by their sudden initiative, except the power of making forced contributions In their enemy's country. Sardinia has her fortremes decors. Aleesandria Casale, Genoa and Turin are in her horde, and all the positions she holds are connected by lines of rail with each other, and with the see, and with the Alpine ppm Into France. It es yet seems as though Models had staked heavily for an opportunity, won It, end now thrown It am. . , BURGH GAZM'IR. Norrupouter. of Nu N. Y. Coonaurial Adiather.l By the Can ada—Loaroos, 'May 6,1859.—News of the war is still delayed. Up to the present time the Austrians seem to have advanced with out much opposition, and they have reached a point within a few miles of Marengo. Here they threaten the Sardinian stronghold of Ales undria, and are in a position, moreover, to ob struct the junction of the French troops advan cing on one side from the Alps, and on the other from Genoa. Reliable accounts from Paris state that the sufferings of the French in crossing the Alps have been terribly severe. The number of men frostbitten is very large, and the snow has pre vented to some extent the passage of horses and artillery. The Imperial guard, have just been sent off by the better route of Marseilles and Genoa, and the departure of the Emperor from Parte was fixed for last evening—the anniversa ry of the departure of hie uncle for the cam paign in which Marengo was won. The elections will not hoover till the middle of the month, but sufficient have already been de cided to show that there will be no very material change in the constitution of the House. The Q.pposition loaders do not seem yet to have de cided positively on their tactics, but the im pression Increases that the Cabinet will be re ceired with uncompromising hostility, and that as a mark of signal indignation for their having dissolved Parliament at euoh a period, they will be ejected from office almost Immediately. Tho financial circumstances of the crisis have not experienced any mitigation. Tho Book of England, as was anticipated, hate announced another rise of one per cent, in their rate of discount, and the minimum charge Is now Si per cent. Even this is expected soon to be in creased, most persons believing that 5 per cent will be adopted in the courco of a fortnight or three weeks. Every one ie anxious to prepare for the worst, and as the Banks do not discount any bills hav ing more than :3 mouths to run, the holders of long dated papers are obliged to submit to such terms as the private banks or discount houses may think fit to exact. In these cases 5i or 6 per cent, is the lowest charge, and business on those terms is transacted almost as a favor To their special customers, however, the Bank of England will make advances on 6 months bills for two or three months at 5f per cent., the parties at the end of that time being liable to pay whatever rate may then prevail. Among the mercantile community there have as yet, with one exception, been no symptoms of distress, but the depreciatidn of securities, the fall in the price of cotton, and the disturb ance to be looked for to distant markets, must be expected to produce much inconvenience. Yesterday the failure was announced of Lloyd, Beilby & Co , • house recently established in the Australian trade. They owe a corn equal to $500,000, God the dividend will depend on the realization of consignments they have made to New South Wales Oil the continent, and especially in Germany, the distress has been terrible. Yeeterday news was received of the stoppage of Arnetein and Eskelee, one of the largest banking firms in Vi enna. They held an immense amount of shares in Austrian railways and other industrial enter prises, and for some time past the extent of their adventures has excited uneasiness. Several of the leading firma in London Were .among their correspondents, but it to not thought that any of them will suffer much lose. iduotnrso flotires & etangcs. nlssoLuTioisl OF PARTNERSIIIP.- 11 The partnership heretofore existing between the ono cribers an the Drug ha:mores in the name of HARTWELL 81111PIIR RD. le this day Jtecolveal, by mutual consent.
