The good pu pil, have ignored the ezistenon of reporters in ar ranging the house for the meeting. The dozen Knights of the quill here afforded an amusing picture this morning in their race for something to write up on. You ought to have aeon your obedient servant with a table on his back and a their in his hand, to say nothing of the perspiration on hie brow, as he en tered the church and took his position' under the very droppings of the sanctuary, all In a most tri umphant mantles, thus vindicating the "Old Grum.," from any "slow-coach" suspicion.. The general impresaion seems to prevail that the coming sessions are to be full of interest Those who ought to know say there has not been an Assembly for twenty years which has embodied more of the ta lent of the chtsreh,ur before which moro immures and questions of importance have come. We glance at o few of_there. The pv,iject of preparing and publishing an author itative church commentary on the whole Bible, has been discussed much, and last year was formally brought before the Assembly at New Orleans, by Dr. It. J. Breckluridge. It that with very decided op position, many maintaining Its utter impracticability. The Princeton Review took very strong ground against It, but there are not a few who still desire to see such an coele.iestiaal deliverance. Another important matter is the propriety of es. tablishing at New Orleans, a branch of the Board of Domestic Missions in order to facilitate busiesu and provide more thoroughly for the wants of the South and Southwest. The question of Domission from the Ministry, In volved to • role providing for the laying aside of the ministerial office in certain eraser, was overland to the Presbyteries last year, will giro rise to a great deal of talk this year, and finally be consigned to the tomb of the Ca pallets, a majority of the Presbyteries having gone against IL The Devised book of Discipline will come up,fur discussion. The nature of the (0•4i011 work will more fully appear when the matter comes before the Assembly. The great exciting debate will probably lie on the Northwest Seminary. Shall It be mtablisheil, and. if so. where? The two couteeting points are Chicago and Indianapolis. Chicago proposes to endow the Seminary to the emouot of $l OO , OOO . and 45 acres of mod estimated at 525,000, with the conditions, as 1 understand, that Dr. Rice, be the Professor of The ology. As to the nature of faith—it is a belief in testimony, which is derived from what passes around us,what passes within us, and what other s testify. alth, theologically con sidered is belief in God's testimony. It is directed to a single point—the Cross of Christ. the great cen. mil troth. It has three elements , I Intellectual conviction of the troth. It to the office of the intel lect to distinguish between the true end the folio. Bat there Is nothing good or bad in the mere Intel lectual. No one was ever governed mainly and chiefly by tho intellect. The governing power in the heart, the feelings. if the intellect and heart are right, a man Is both wile and good. All the real happiness of human natuna is gretified affection. Now our faith must get hold of the affections if we would ho happy. We must have the heartfelt approbation of God's testimony. Thus one net only believe him, but •we love him. This I. the second element of faith. There is another element. The angels be lieve and love, the devils believe but do not love; ransomed men believe, love and trust. The heart of the ginner will not have faith. The regenerate heart only can believe. Faith is clearer and stronger as the heart is more sanctified, and It, etrength increas ing as be goes on in his christion life. In death, It triumphs. Faith brings the future into its proper prominence. It to the telescope by which we may look into eternal horror and eternal glory. Faith enables us to walk conquerors over the ills and sor rows of life. It brings us Into communion with God our Father—a foretaste of heaven. Faith and Works are inseparably connected. Faith le the highest or necessity of the minieter of Jeans Christ. Dr. Moe hen a most remarkable power of present tog truth in simplicity—a teak which requires the very highest kind of mental vigor. LOST its TIM SITAIIP.—The Postmaster at Jones' Hill, St. Francis county, Ark., in the course of a letter to the editor of the Little Rock Democrat, narrates the following story to prove a position he takes that a "woman can stand more cold than a man :" A few weeks ago Mr. Robert P. Jones and Mr. Ocorge Armor went in the bottom on a hunting excursion. One day, after felling a. tree, they heard the voice of a woman, and upon proceeding to the place whence the cries . issued, found a woman sitting on a log in a canebrake, and a few feet from her, lying in the water, several inches deep, was her hus band, am - wooly able to move. Mr. Armor returned to the camp, procured blankets and food, while Mr. Roberts kindled a fire. They noticed that when the food was given to the female she carefully fel the man by putting the bread and meat in his mouth, as he was scarcely able to move. The woman stated that their name was Aiken; that they had attempted to take a "nigh cut" through to Clarendon, Monroe county, but had got lost in the canebrake, and had been three weeks with no food save parsimmons and acorns. The singular part of the story is, that though they bad no firs during the time, were wet for the whole three weeks, and though Mrs. Aiken bad taken off all her under clothing with which to protect her husband, yet she was not frost bitten, while he was, and so badly that he was with difficulty enabled to walk. The place where they were found was twelve or fifteen miles from any house, in T. 3, N. R. 3 W. Quite a striking illustration of woman's de votednesa and power of endurance. Wien, the onottaut, has just completed MA ar rangements preparatory to a trantroontinental voyage from St. Louis to the Allende etaboard, in his monster balloon the "Nineteenth Centu ry," which Is sixty-eight feet in diameter, and will contain from sixty to eighty thousand feet of gas. Mr. Wise expects to make the start from Bt. Louis about the middle of June, or at farth est, early in July. Mr. Wise is proseonting this undertaking at his own expense, regarding it chiefly as an experiment with which to satisfy himself of the practicability of his long cher ished scheme of earonanting acmes the Atlantic ocean. Mr. Wise states that a similar enterprise will soon be attempted by Mr. Gager, who well make either St. Sonia or Chicago his starting point.
