MOgrair --NORM% MAY 38, 18611., DesitsSief 3tireireJ4 ieeze!ealle.t" The Goad Shrlogs the briefest- ptiosible form of annonumraent of the deathof Baron Humboldt, en what precise day. Is not etated, but probably at a day tear to the stay of sailing of the steam er, which wan the 7th of litity. IS Is to be re gretted that .nothlng inregard to the imm edit° eireumatances 'attending thitt event has been for withal° simple announcement, but there was probably nothing peculiar or unexpected in 14 - as It has for.some months been known that his Ph,vsietki strength was at a very frail point, and that be might at almost any day stiffer a fa tal issue of some slight disease. . ; No man manillas uierus than Baron Humboldt has ever occupied the attention or won the regard of that. portion of the world which has at heart -the advancement of the race in knowledge, and in all that sales ce confers of good . He h ad al so the singed.? go od fortune to advanee in every thing to the last day of his life—to perfect his erudition upon the mostslifficultpoints, to follow with close and just discrimination every step In the progress of his favorite sciences, and to keep Fiee witl.thiS keetteit activity in all science., and in either hemisphere, so well that to the very last heeotaprehended, end Ina sense su pervised, everything, and held, by a stronger tenure than ever, the throne of Ovoidal solutes to which he had come by , a right none ever dis puted. His supremacy an a Master of the sciamee of observstion was such that it has long been the habit of scientlfie men to accept his judgment in them ai final; and there has been no instance of contest with a school, or of rivalry with an associate, in his Who!. carter. He leaned strong ly from the first to the eimply natural side of science, and he left everything else, and. laid aside all eooial and political preferment, to spend the but part of his life in the study of nature and of naturalphenomeust but through the whole of his journeys la America and in Asia, it is constantly shown that the greatest problems In physical science were continually borne in mind, and that his journeys were not undertaken to Judi:age in the pietism's of merely seeing what was new. Ho was the first who adequately compre hended the physics of the earth, and who recog nised the necessity of observing as widely, as pos sible, and the whole surface of the earth, if pos sible, in order to determine the laws of its phys ical structure. He was also the fleet who con structed a satisfactory basis for the various departmente of natural science which he has so thoroughly elualdsted; in their history as well as otherwise, iii his Kosmos. Humboldt was of an ancient noble family, hie father having been a high officer, and a favorite in the military service of Prussia, under Fred eric the Great. ' His elder brother, William, horn in 1767, attained great literary aid politi cal eminence in Germany, and indeed, in all En rope, being at one time minister to England, -and subsequently taking a strong stand as min ister of State for a constitutional government in Russia. This was in 1818 and 1819, at ono of those periods whioh have opened with promise for liberal institutions in Germsay, to clone, so far, in reaction and misfortune. He attacked the despotic Carlsbad decrees of the German diet of 1819 with extreme sharpness and serenity, alarming Austria and the despoUo party of all Germany, and for this most honorable and re markable course, in which he was supported by his brother Alexander, he wan forced to retire from the ministry at the closed 1819. He died in 1835, barium devoted his later years to history and literature. Alexander, the younger brother, was born in 1769, and at his death had reached the age of eightynine years and eight months. During the terentyfive years since his elder brother's death, he has received all the honors and testimonials of confidence from the people and government of Prussia which were before that time divided between them. He has held the post of Privy Councillor of Prussia since 1829, and has con tinued to receive every testimonial of political and personal respect which the ruling family could confer. Though never taking the active part which, his brother took on the liberal side, he has alw ays testified his attachment to consti tutional government. From the date of his first visit to the 17nited States, 1804, on his return to Europe from South America, he has omitted no opportunity to exprees his high regard for our institutions, as Veil as our people, and in 1818 be was confidently looked to for support of the new order which the weakiese of therepnblicans of Europe then failed to establish. Humboldt spent two or three months to this 1` r- ... 4:7_ ~=~, '~- .. e.::i' '',- i;:'' ~city and Washington in the early part of 1804, .V , visit devoted, as he himself says, to the study oar political. institutions. — lt is not an unwar rantable conclusion that the strong stand taken by both the brothers for constitutional govern ment, a few years later, in Germany-4 was t h e result of these investigations. Bat Alexander Humboldt Was never willing to exercise decisive political - power, considering, probably, that he was represented by his 'brother in that depart ment, and that.his favorite field of investigation in physical science was an ample work for one mind. The foundation of his great final work, entitled the Boeums, was laid in an extended course of lectures, as early as 1827, and its peculiar character deserves a more extended notlee than we have space for here. - • . There is a eingular completeness and fulness in the life of Humboldt, which makes his death appear bat as a slight change. Held in high and tifeedonate regard as he is, his admirers everywhere lease become accustomed to the grad. nal attenuation of his phyaical frame, without associating with him any idea of intellectual de . coy. In his library an imperishable statue should succeed to hie personal presence, and er cry scene should bo preserved unaltered, as a shrine to which lovers of nature may forever tern with reverence.—Phil.
