Walker, who did the tragedy in the witness box to the old lady of sixty, whothought .tho safety of her sex required a vindication of Sickles by her presence in the court room—it is to bo deeply regretted that not a single individ ual among them has had the good feeling or the good taste to intimate to the father of the un fortunate woman that his personal attendance at the trial is highly indelicate if not grossly inde cent. We almost imagine that we can trace to this unnatural hardness of heart, as well as in difference to the ordinary proprieties of life, on the part of the parent, the insensibility of the daughter to those feelings which distinguish and at the same time support the virtuous woman. We can understand why the elder Sickles should be at his eon's aide at Washington—he is there for the same reason that Mr. Bagioli should be at his home supporting his erring and prostrate daughter. If the father of Mrs. Sickles were compelled by a mandate of the law to be pres ent at the exposure of his daughter's - shameLif he were forced by the same authority to be a spectator of the cruel dissections of her repute lion as a woman and as a wife—how the great_ public heart would bleed for him ! How society' would, with one voice, deprecate the cruel nezes lily which would require a obristian father to become for a time a heartless savage! However divided they - might be with regard to the participants in the crime all would extend their sympathy to the unhappy father. And yet Mr. %glen, without compulsion, and of his own free will, has repaired to Washington, to be ..present at this trial, mingling with the crowd of spectators, listening against his will to jeers uttered in derision of his own flesh and blood, and publicly witnessing the ruin which has fallen upon his house. lie cannot de fend his unfeeling conduct by asserting that t o has gone there for the . purpose of comforting his eon -in-law, who has hie parents at his side, and is cheered with the support of official and social influence. We sly again that his conduct is un natural and unworthy of a parent reared under the influence of our enlightened institutions. He should leave Washington—it is no-place - for him now--and if he is indifferent, in he really eeeme to be, to his daughter's penitential sufferings, her unavoidable regrets for the past, and her 1 grief in the dark desolation which surrounds her, he should at least have the delicacy to absent himself from a place where he is reminded every moment in burning word; of her great fault, and tho dishonor:which it reflects upon his name. Such hardness of heart as he has displayed, when boldly thrust upon public attention, is, to our mind criminal, and almost deserves punishment as a crime. Tun germs or Goon TIMLS.—it is the fash ion, just now, to exchange congratulations on the revival of business, the return of prosperity; and the bright prospect before us, and to indulge in sundry self-landations as to the utter impos sibility of keeping an adverse pressure, long, upon so great a country as this is, sir. And so •forth. Nevertheless, at the risk of being thought a croaker, we venture to call attention to the figures presented in the extract below, and to suggest that this "great country, sir," is this moment upon the brink of as great a danger as that which betel her in 1857. There is the same recklessness in importing, a greater barrenness of experts, the same heavy shipments of-gold, and the same careless feeling of security. Our word of warning may not be heeded; but we will utter it, and ask men who are cool-h ceded enough to think without bias, to ponder this ex tract, which we take from the N. Y. Tie New Jonow.--The Harrisburg Telegraph says that the appointment of Judge Maynard to the new Judgeship in this county is an excellent one. We do not question It. But how is it that our democratic Governors can never find one here fit far a Judge? We believe this is the Jonah Judge that has been sent us from the north—all of them good enough Ridges, but still no better than our own bar could furnish. There may be some excuse for exporting a Judge Into a barren district; but there can be none for Tutting each a slight upon such a county as this. Mr. Maynard may be a very good lawyer ; but we are not prepared to admit that all the good *lawyers in the State graduate in Lycoming county, and we know we hare as good lawyers -here as ever swanned from the Lycoming hive. Such a liberty would not be taken with the bar of Philadelphia county ; and why should we be eubjected to It, here? Is New York there hits been formed a Young Men's Early Bleb* Association, all ihelltthbe" 'of whlch are pledged to be up at a certain hour. IL originated with - about half a dozen young men. who haring kept up thin habit for soli° years, were surprised-et its beneficial effeets, . and the. nom in of their associates. • . Gor,,Foorw, the rejuvenated and the hewig' ged, who-once stood, ltigh in tile councils of the Democratic: party, has withdrawn frota its fool embraces, and is now amongibe bOldest of its manta In a speech delivered recently at • mass meeting in Nashville, be need thelollow log language : "lie was a Democrat, but he contended there wa r s no true Democratic party now In existence. The organization called Democratic, he regarded as utterly incapable of conducting public affairs in an honest and statesman-like manner. In fact, the Democratic party now in existence is dishonest, corrupt and imbecile in the extreme —.confessedly - so. Party organs and party lead ers openly avow it—the Washington States bad repeatedly charged it, and had exposed the peen lotions, fronds and thefts of governmentofficials —even the Washington Union, the organ of the Executive, tins had the unblushing effrontery and hardihood to acknowledge and attempt to justify one of the most corrupt procedures ever undertaken by an American Executive. lie re ' (erred to the laying of a per tentage on the sal ' erica of federal officers for party purposes. “The leader, of the Opposition are the best men In the nation; and when such men armee themselves and prepare for an encounter with their opponents, success is certain. It be thought otherwise; if ho thought the nominee of the Charleston Convention would be elected, he would despair of the Republic, The Governor then spoke of the Opposition in the free States, and he said he knew they would be charged with Abolitionism. But he knew they were not, and never bad been, untrue to the Constitution and its guarantees." When such sentiments are avowed in the South, in reference to the Republican party, would it not be a burning shame for a citizen of the North to be misled by silly talk about "aboli tionism" and "disunion," in the approaching contest. Let ua conduct the great battle on the platform of 'lBt..tti, and even the South will be compelled to do justice to our principles, and ac knowledge the righteousness of our Cause. TERRIBLE Snow STORM—Probable Loss of Life on the Plains.—Recorder McCosh received a let ter yesterday from his Awn George, dated Flor ence, Nebraska, April sth, stating that there were then eighteen inches of snow on the ground and it hail drifted terribly. A dreadful storm of wind had prevailed, prostrating almost every thing in its ,way. No covered wagon or tent could stand Wore it. It is feared that there has been much loss of life on the plains among the emigrants, and certainly a great deal of suf fering at the least. We shall look with anxiety for the full details of this snow and wind storm. —Davenport Gazette Tue Ward spirit does not seem to have died out in the Kentucky schools. The regular tea,,h er of the Fourth Ward School in Louisville being ill, appointed a Mr. Gray as ettbstitue. The boys soon manifested signs of rebellion, and on Friday, as is elated in the Courier, one of the larger boys got upon the teacher's desk, and like the boy in the apple tree refused to come down. The teacher attempted to chastise him, whereon the pupil eeized a poker, and struck Mr. Gray a severe blow on the side of the head. Mr. Gray left the school room, followed by all the boys, who pursued him with brick bats and stones for some distance. Tue FILOIT AND ma Caora--We have favors ble reports from the farmers of our county (Clarke) with regards to the crops. Enough has been spared by the frosts on the peach, cherry and other fruit trees, to afford an abundant supply. The wheat in many places looks very promising and even where it is winter-killed the stalks which are left aro spreading themselves nobly. Hopkins then went be fore the grand jury, complained of himself, pleaded guilty, and was fined, one dollar. The teacher being dissatisfied, brought a civil suit for damages, and recovered seven hundred dol lars. Catao.—The correspondent of the St. Louis Democrat writes, April 10th : "One of the Mes srs. This pump is said to be capable of throwing out thirty barrels of water per minute." le mentions also that the "mosquitoes were quite troublesome here yester day, before the rain."
