The District-Attorney pro duced as witnesses on the trial, Captain Moffat, who commanded the Dolphin at the lime of the capture, Lieut. Carpenter, and the surgeon and coxswain of the Dolphin. A model of the Eche, showing her complete outfit as a slaver, was also produced and exhibited to the Jury. The own ership of the Echo was shown to he in Towne bend, the captain, who Woe also proved to be a native of Providence, Rhode Island, who be had married. This fact of citizenship was proved by a witness who had visited hiin while in jolt at Boston for the purpose of identifying him. Cap ' tain Moffat testified that he kept Townshend on board the Dolphin because his intelligence and reckless air had led him to fear that he might prove troublesome if left on board the Echo.— The slaves, he said, were sent to Charleston, be cause he knew there were several places there where they could he comfortably lodged, and es pecially on account of the facility of telegraphic communication thence to Washington. tin a chart found on board, was traced a continous line, showing the vessel's course from the coast of Africa to the point of her capture. Ilenery, cue of the prisoners, told Lieutenant Carpenter that they were forty•three or forty-four days out, and that he had made signals for landing the negroes on the afternoon of the capture. Ile claimed one of them as his own property. . . No testimony was offered on behalf of the pris oners, who were defended by four lawyers, nod whom the telegraph represents as having ta" acquitted by the Jury. They were indicted, re. suppose, under the fourth and fifth sections of the act of 1620; which provides that any person being of the ships' opmpany of any vessel owned wholly or in part by any citizen of the United States who shall receive en any foreign shore any negro or mulatto, not held to science by the lawn of either of the States or Territories of the United States, on board such vessel with intent to make him a slave, or who shall forcibly con fine or detain, or aid and assist in confining or detaining, any such negro on board such vessel, shall be deemed a pirate, and suffer death. We are not yet informed of the grounds on which the defence was placed, whether the coun sel confined-themselves merely to denying that a sufficient case had been made out as against the prisoners, or whether they were allowed to argue to the Jury that the law on which the in dictment was founded was unconstitutional —N. The flood is es high and destruotive no that of last year, which was so desolating in its effects. The reports from the "coast." are that the levee is broken in many places, and a great number of plantations under water. Many places that escaped teat year are now suffering. The sys tem of Mississippi levees . seems wholly inade quate to the resistance of the vast volume of water they are constructed to confine. it is ap parent that the bed of the Mississippi is rising. At the very time that hundreds of plantations are under water, and millions of dollars worth of property destroyed, a great fleet is detained at the mouth of tho river because there is not a sufficiency of water, to enable them to get over the bare. This state of affairs commands the most serious consideration of the planters and merchante of the Southwest.—Cin. Corn. A sew controversy with Great Britain is grow ing up in the North West. It seems that when Mr. Polk and Mr. Buchanan gave up the right of the United States to all the territory on the Pacific, as far 'as L•l° 40' North latitude, they laid down the new boundary, which they adopted, in snob an ignorant and careless manner, that it is now uncertain whether certain waters and Islands belong to Great Britain or Washington Territory. The recent gold diimoveriesin Frazer River, and the consequent influx of settlers, have rendered these doubtful islands valuable; and, according to our correspondent at Ban Fran cisco, difficulty on the subject is at hand. His letter, which we give on another page, atates lu cidly all the facts bearing upon the dispute.—N. I'. Drib. A Pr, jrered improvement—CO rt. llail• ways—the Porno Tra rrops Railroad Nailer, I Correspondeoce of tho Ctueinciati BALTIMORE, Marcia 30.—The project of down Federal Hill, and filling up the Basin therewith, to the mouth of Junes' Fails, whirl. was originated by lie. T. 11. Buckler, of this city, is again beginning to attract attention, now that the City Railway question has been disposed of. I Competent engineers have been employed by the city government to examine into the feasibility of the proposed enterprise, rind, should they re- ' 1 port favorably; the question of its propriety and expediency, will at once become a practical one. The The more I have looked into the matter, the more thoroughly have I become convinced of its practicability and value. The entire cost of lev• elling the bill, and filling up the Basin, will not exceed, upon a careful estimate, Sdtiti, thig 'his operation, seventy-five acres will he added o the terrain of the city, of immense value be cause located in the very center of business, and possessed of a deep water frontage. The ex treme southwestern and southeastern sections of the city, now separated, will be brought togeth er, and the heavy business, which is rapidly en croaching upon the retailers, and driving them into the quarters formerly devoted to residences will be turned towards its proper positioo, at the head of deep water. Residents will, as a con eequeoee, not he forced to look for eligible sites for building, outside the limits of taxation, and the taxable basis will be increased, both by the addition of 75 acres of valuable property, and the retention of dwellings within the city limits. In addition to all this, increased value will be given to property on Whetstone Point, Canton, Sc., which now, for obvious reason?, is compar atively worthless, and cannot, under !he eNtetine state of things, he brought into play for many years. Dr. Buckler, who, as I said before, is the originator of this prone!, is also its most vig orous champion and defender, and triumphantly disposes of the arguments and objections of cav• illers. The subject is one of immense impor tance to Baltimore, in a hygienic and commer cial point of view, and I will keep you advised of Its development, knowing the interest that Cin cinnati naturally feels in whatever concerns her Atlantic Sister. By a combination of the City Railway and City Park interests, a bill has finally panned the Council, and receivedtheeignatureof the Mayor, granting the privilege of laying tracks in the principle streets, Baltimore street included, for the purpose of running passenger care, at a charge of 6 cents per poesenger, the fifth of the sum thus received to go towards the purchase and embellishment of it City Park. Much dts satisfaction prevails on account of this action, inasmuch as responsible parties proposed to carrapassengers for 3 cents per trip. and the just fflb of compelling those who may use the Railway care, to pay for a Park; it nut appar ent. Strong hints of "bribery and corruptions' are thrown out, as usual, without specification of the individuate bribed or bribing. The cot, lenience has long been needed, and s will no doubt be welcomed on any terms, although wo may not very clearly see why we should be compelled to pay 6 cents for that which wo might have bought for 3 cents. A man who would commit such an absurdity in his private transactions, might look out for a writ "de lunatic° inquireit• do." I am afraid there was "some method in the madness" of our City Fathers. Business, which opened rather doll this Spring la beginning to look up, and a general improve ment is manifest, especially in the mechanical branches of trade. Among these latter, no one has made greater strides, within a few years, both in this city and country, than the piano forte business. A few years ago it was disdain fully asked abroad, "Who plays 00 an American piano," but now the first artistes of Europe rec ognise ours as folly equal to. the best to he found in the bent manufactories of the old world. One of the oldest and most succeasful establishments in the United States, is that of Chickrring Bro , of Boston, which was established in 1823, and has sent forth some splendid instruments. But, I feel quite secure in asserting, (and I do feel SO upon the authority of Borne of the first musicians of the day) that the Pianos of Wm. Realm, S.: Co , and others, of this city, are fully equal, and in some respects superior to those of Northern manufacturers. I am sustained in this statement by the very carefully prepared Price Current of the American, issued in January last, in which it says. ••It may be well to state that at the exhibi tion held at the Maryland Institute, the highest honors were carried off, for four years In sue cession, by Baltimore Pianos, and similar re sults attended the exhibition of Baltimore made instruments, in Washington, Richmond and else where. The trade in these Instruments is car. tied - on with the surrounding States of Pennsyl vania, Virginia, and North Carolina, and also with several Western States, and we learn they find great favor wherever used. Indeed no better proof could be adduced of their excellence, than the fact that in most cases when sold in the city, the manufacturers guarantee them, for a period afire yearn. Pianos of Baltimore man ufacture are fast gaining preference over thine of the best makers of Boston and New York, and we think It probable that agencies for the sale of them will, ere long, be established in Boston, where they will come into competition with manufacturers who have, for years, enjoyed the highest reputation. The business now is evidently on the Increase, and will, ere long, become of much importance to Baltimore." From the same source I learn that the total number of Pianos rode in Baltimore last year was estimated at 1,000, valued at $360,000, and giving employment to nearly 300 hands. The establishment of IYm. Knabo & Co., North Eu taw street, which is by far the moat celebrated and extensive in the city, turned out about six hundred last year, which is three times as many as were manufactured by all the makers here, , ton years ago,. They have three establishments one on West street, one on Eutaw street, oppo site the Eutaw House, and a Sales-room on Bal timore street, near Charles. They employ nearly 160 workman and are constantly enlarging their bushman operations. Their instruments have received the commendations of such men as Thalberg, Strokes* Satter and Vieux Temps, and have taken the highest premiums at fairs in this city, Washington, Richmond, etc. Besides this vast establishment are other smaller ones. The action of the late Railroad Convention at Columbus, gives satisfaction, evidencing as it does, a determination on the part of the South ern rondo to eland together in opposition to the New York Central. The course of the latter road is represented in the strongest terms, as tho-basest.duplieity. While Its water communi cations with the West were interrupted, it was willing to enter into a compact with the Southern roads, which would protect it until the opening of the lakes ehood put it on a foot ing of equality with its competitor°. We shall see whether, in the future, it will be able to play the same game. The weather to all that could be desired, and the wheat orap,in this region looks exceedingly vigorous and promising. . We have not had a frost since some time inFebruary, and if see es- Cape a freese during April, we shall have the largest fruit yield known for years.
