Raziatoos Swourriss.—We saw, in the hole pcurkat, a prospective view of the contest likely to tale place at the annual meeting of the Amer ican Tract Society, which will be held in New York in May. SO= business which was laid on the tablewt the last 'anniversary, will be taken up then, in all probability. _Whether that be so oe.not, we may be sure that the whole question which has agitated and virtually divided that or ganization, will present itself again at the board and ask once more to be decided. The Society has borne zealous testimony, year after year' against the sin of dancing and- smoking. Its position in respect to them being now well un derstood, it is considered no more than proper that it Vehould say where it stands with respect 1.0 kidnapping, alave•trading and slave-holding. The receipts of the Society for the last year have been, (as we learn from the Journal of Comm ern, which paper appears to have takes both this Society and Mr. Buchanan into its own charge and keeping 4 $383,378, which is about three hundred dollars more than the previous year. The receipts of the American Bible Society the past year exceeded, by nearly $20,000, that of the previous year. The receipts of the Ameridan Home Missionary Society are in advance of the previous year. The American Board, for the seven months just closed, show an advance of over $20,000. _ The Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions (old school,) do not report the receipts as large as:the previous year. The same remark applies to the American and Foreign Christian Union. The falling off is attributed to the discontinuance of agencies. Gov. Curia.—ln some quarters, injustice is being done to Gov. Chase, of Ohio, by repre senting him as an ultra Free-Trade man. This is an error. GOT. Chase, as we believe, regards the collection of revenue through a tariff of do limit's essentially necessary ; and such a tariff ehouldhe arranged so se-to promote as efficient ly as possible the development of American re sources and the prosperity of American industry. At some future time, commercial restrictions may be abandoned by the common consent of nations, and our country may lead the way to wards general reciprocity of commercial inter course; but this is not yet. The support of doyinspaent by duties levied upon importations, _- - Lf' indispensa'ble ; and whatever theoretical dif ferences there may be among Republicans, there can-be no practical differences as to the proper line of policy to bo pursued. Gov. Chase is ' eminently a practical man, and in favor of that public policy best adapted to once more put and - keep in motion the wheels of cur home indus try, and protect our home interests ; and these include the iron and wool of the northern and -middle and western States, as well as the sugar and cotton and tobacco of the southern States. —N. Y. Trib. The correction here made is due to Gus. Chase, and we are-enabled, from our personal know ledge, to add our endorsement to the facts se t _ forth by the Tribune. In addition to thierwe feel impelled to refer to an idea thrown out by the Providence (R. I.) Journal, which . intimates that the difficulty in - - lhat State between the" American" Republicans and the "Straight" Republicans, is owing to the determination of the latter to send a delegation to the Rational Convention, favorable to the nomination of Gov. Chase, of Ohio, for Presi dent. If this be so. we are sure GOT. Chase is not a party to the arrangement. Lie is a Repub lican, firm and consistent, but always ready to employ every means of conciliating differences . and uniting all the elements of opposition upon one ticket. Ile is now, as ho always has been, in favor of any movement that will tend to con 'eolidate those elements without a sacrifice of principles, and hie kind and conciliatory course in Ohio haa contributed very mach to the un broken front which the opposition presents in that State. In Cincinnati, his home, all branches of the opposition have been for two years past - boitud together in a friendly union, and that union has had no wormer friend than Governor - Chase. - - . . Tun EMT Brrtur.—We Sod the following in the Newark Mercury, which portrays a epirit which we trust will not be confined to New Jer sey. It appears that the opposition in that an cient commonwealth are determined to make The most of its victory over (also Democracy last fail, by uniting their forces and healing old tends, in order- to gain more arid greater tri nrtyba:---in the futnro. Let other States follow the example ect them by the Republicans and Americans of New Jersey, and the battle of 18G0 will be gained with little additional effort "Thera is every disposition on the part of the Opposition in this Stoic to cement the union et - fectell last falL'and thus build up a party of principle, devoted to great truths, and to noble doctrines. We aro no longer to be misled by doubtful issues or cant phrases, and this health faletate of public opinion is one of the most cheering signs of the times. The Opposition of New jersey, like their brethren in the east and north and.west, are prepared to make Issue with the pea-slavery Democracy upon all then tenets. The flag of Freedom is Gong to the breeze, anal —under it a vigorous and united host will match to victory." With such a feeling prevailing iir-the councils of ,the Opposition party in Pennsylvania, we can claim this State, on behalf of Freedom, by a majority of thirty thousand—if not more. It was too small j to carry away all the unfortunates, and three hundred and thirty were left till word was ta ken to Sydney and nnot her vessel sent to their relief. M=MIZ:I==M THE COAL FIELDS , or 110: UNITSD STATE?. Professor Rogers has furnished his long expect ed work on the "Geology of Pennsylvania, - and it is issued in the United States and in England. The English reviewers appear a little astonished at the immense coal fields of the United States, beside which their own are diminutive. The coal fields of Great Britain are its extent about 5,400 square miles. Those of the United States are 195,850 square miles. While the amount of wbrkable coal in Great Britain is put down 111. 190,000,000,000 tons, that of North America is set down at 4,000,00 0 ,0 0 0,000, or twenty-two times greater in amount than the mines of Great Britain. An English paper, commenting upon these facts says "When we reflect upon what has been achieved by the produce of the coal fields of Great Brit ain, and then endeaver to anticipate the mining of the vast fields of the United States upon an extensive scale, we are led to forecast a future of almost boundless enterprise for that wonder ful country."
