OEYEIt, Cl»*lrntan7»ro (cm. Bcbsqa Bairn, Soo’y. The Attack os tub Goveekob. —The recent action of the democratic State Convention in re* gard to Gov. Packer has inspired the whole paok of Lecompton journals with a Tery excep tionable kind of blustering courage. A large number that scarcely uttered a word pro or con in the controversy previous to last Wednesday, arc noW'iJpenbg on the trail of the Governor like 6k pack of famished hounds. They havo all suddenly hecozno oracoJar, and are given to reading long lectures to their refraotory mem bers on the wickedness of opposing "the party,’ 1 ' and its recognized idols. The Patriot 4* Union, which even remained silent under the mortifioatlon of having one of Us publishers dls ' missed from au office under the State govern ment is now among tho noisiest uad the most pot valiant in the general attack on the Stale Administration. In reading tho folloTricc- ex tract from one of its articles, Iho reader wiU be struck with the aptitude which it exhibits in dignifying unworthy motives with high sound ing names, and the readiness with which it do siguates-arr&nt cowardice as simplo "leniency”. ♦|Our readers will bear witness that up to this moment the Patriot $ Vqion has treated Gover nor Packer, and all his surroundings, with the utmost leoiency. We have abstained from ex posing his infidelity with the hope that he would retraoe his steps, or do something to re move the stench of disorganization from his skirts. But his offences against the party, whose welfare ehould havo been bis only care, have become so rank, that forbearonco ceases to be a virtue. The Convention has pronounced him unworthy of the smallest mark of confi dence, and we would not perform our duty to the demooratio party if we abstained any longer from exposing him as his offenoes deserve. "The Convention could not do otherwise than cast him out. Such a load would eink any po litical organization. Discipline must be pre served, or we forever perish. Governor Packer’s offence to tH« party does not oonsist in differing with the President upon the Kansas question. No doubt an effort will be made to .impress this conviction upon the public mind, but no sophistry or declamation can make it true.” In the estimation of the Union, "Gov. Packer’s offence” lies in a certain appointment whioh he -made a few weeks since.- Mr. Monaghan—a Chester county politician, naturally inolined to 'do very work—thinks that it consists in ' his approval of the eolo of the canals for the ben efit of theSunbory & Erie “Railroad. Another discontented spirit suggests some other yersioa of it, and thus the Governor will be compelled to "fun the political gauntlet, until the October elec : lion, when the pooplo will comfort him by treat ' ing his, enemies—great and small—to a Water loo- defeat. The Governor’s special traducers ehould make the moßt of their triumph; for in a fow short months the power which they eerve will cease to bo regarded as such. It will reach that point of degradation when it will be dc y prlved of followers and apologists—and then these eummer friends, now so gallant in trampling on tho reputation of a former political associate, will utter tho most earnest cries; for quarter, and wiiTuiYoko tho deepest curses on the man whom tfrey are now so anxious to exalt. All this will brought about through the destruction of that much-talked of "cohesive power of publio plun der,” whioh is the life and soul of the democratic organization. «► The Pennsylvanian speaks of the convention as If It were the embodiment of the genuine pop- ular, sentiment of the Stale, and not a mere creation of official' hirelings and~~bungry office seekers. It talks.in lofty language of the Vtii" umph of principle’’-—of the “President being vindicated before the people”—and deals in other politicaTclap-traps, which go far to makeup the sum and substance of the speeches and bulletins of its. party. * Nor Quire so Disiuterested, After all.—- The letter of Judge Ewing in favor of repealing Lho Tonnage Tax concluded with a grand flourish of trampets astohis entire disinterestedness in giving that opinion. Ho claimod that it was given .without foo»orhope of reward, and the idea was held out that it was therefore entitled 1 to great weight as the unbiassed view of one having no interest which the railroad can ' subserve. It torus out that the Judge is the President of a branch railroad from Connellsville to TJolontown, and that the managers of this little one-horse affair have flattered into the belief that the road ought to be continued across to Greensburg and that the Pennsylvania Hoad will famish the means for building it. Accord- reaped of any freehold, copyhold, or leasehold interest in the some premises than ehall be equal to two voters for every eiogle tenement or undi vided plot of land, uoldss they shall hare derived the same by descent, succession, marriage, mar riage settlement, devisb, or promotion as afore said, or unless they shall bo lona fidt engaged aapartners carrying on trade or business thereon, ingly we find'th&La bill has been introduced VII. Bevcral months ago, during tho difficulties iu south-eastern Kansas, old John Brown of Ossawattoroio, went across tho river, into Missouri, with a party of men, aod took in a very gentle and kindly manner,' eleven slaves from the owner of a plantation, and run them into Kansas. For fear the friends of the slave holder might learn from the chivalrous south erner of the taking, the owner received a polite invitation from Brown to accompany him over the Kansas river, which he was compelled to accept, and after tho freed slaves were placed in safety, was allowed to depart. By short stages and under the protection of their deliverer, the slaves were Jtakcn through Kansas and Nebraska into lowa, where Brown bidding them Godspeed, returned to the sccbo of hts labors.
