Gazette: In consequence of iho fall of so much rain during the winter months, with spells of very sultry weather, Spring—with all Us charms —burst upon us earlier than usual, and vegetation Is springing up all around. Tho weather at no time is colder than an occasional frost and slight skimming of ice over water. Tho gardens attached to tho pri vate residences—particularly in tho fourth munici pality or "garden district”*—aro beautifully carpeted In green, trees robed with their appropriate foliage, flowers blushing, birds caroling, wpile hero and there trees are l&doned with oranges, bananas, Ac. Ia quite a number,of localities in thel city you will find groupcs of "flower girls”-“Somo of thorn rather old girls—selling tempting boquots. At the corner of Canal and Rue Royal, both fashionable promenading streets, .and midway between the Post Office and Saint Charles Hotel, there are usually a bevy of these brunette, black-ey«d daughters of Eve seated along the pavement duriog, tho day and long into tho hours of night, arranging their flowers into taste ful boquets of all sizes and ehapes, and within tho compass of any ones purse, aud making tho air redo lent with fragrance. The climate is admirably adapted to the cultivation cf flowers at a very slight cost and labor. Then tbe people, generally, aro a pleasure seeking community, and are accustomed to frequent places of amusement, thereby creating a demand for such things which gives employment to a large number in roaring them and selling them at reasonable prices. The subject of education is occupying a large space in the public mind, arising, undoubtedly, from the a&me powerful influence that Is giving tone to every department of tho city. The reader may easily guess that this inflames, in beautifying tho city and rendering it attractive, and moulding ijml giving tone to the morals, dees not anso from the creole portion of the population, but from natives of other States. The rapid «dvanco of educational facilities will soon pat tablush even those residing in the land, of "steady '"baMls," who boast so much lo this respect But lgokutthe facts : according to a recent statement there ft's forty-one schools in tbe four districts, four of which, are high schools. In the seven schools of tho foarUwflstrict, there are forty departments. The pupils attending those schools is between sixteen seventeen thousand. These.schools received frdttstbo public school fund for the year 1858, s2dl,4*£ and slB,f*oo from tho city io appropriations foplSw building. The State Superintendent of Pablffifestructiou strongly rec commonds the establishttpwof Normal Schools, and thinks one hundred dollars should be set apart for that purpose.' fr it is well known, doubtless, by your commercial readers, that there is eobliderablo rivalry existing botween the Crescent Cjtyjind New York. Now and then the editorial fraternity get at sword-points in the discussion. Recently, aitaidNcw York journal intending a compliment for' tho proGlablo manner ia which the banking business hud been conducted in ibis city for soveral years, stated tho dividends of the banks, on an average, were equal to those paid in that city. This paragraph roused the Southern blood of a leading paper lion, who replied with an array of figures that must havo proved a "ectller” to tbe New Yorker. Here it is in a nut shell: New Orleans has eight basks with capital of something over fifteen millions, showing profits of over, five millions daring tho past year, while there areilfly foar banks in New York city with capitals amount ing to sLaty-eight millions, which only givon profit in the aggregate of a shadoof erer six millions eight hundred thousand dollars. Tho average dividend paid by tbe former, IHi per cent, and tho latter 74 per cent. These figures, in connection with what was communicated in tho last latter on banks in gen eral, and the Citizens’ Bank ih particular, speak well for the banking operations of this place. This city is to Louisiana, b many respects, what Parts i,s to Franco, the centre of attraction. The Boston School Thocbles— Pupils order td to'‘Obey or Leave." —The sectarian troubles in the North End schools hoa subsided some what in the Eliot school, bat 6eeme to have broken out in a new spot. This morning, in one of the Hanover street primary schools tbe lady teacher, could not pursuade a number of her pupils to repeat the ten commandments, and the other simple devotional exercises were unheeded by many of her school. Tbo little fellows and misses, varying in years from four to seven, stoutly refused to participate m any prolestant form of service, and tbe little rebellion was almost ludicrous to witness. In this case tbe children were considered to be altogether too young to be held personally responsible, and their parents will bo notified to enforce their obedience to the rules, or to removo their children from echool. In the Eliot school, this morning, about twen ty-fivo of the scholars refused ta join in the opening religious service, and these were ad dressed by Mr. Mason, tho Principal of the sohool, who told them that no means would bo used to force them in any way to disobey com mands received from parents or religious in structors, but adding that tbe discipline of tbe school must be maintained, told them if they felt lheliD6truction6 of tbeir parents or the priests to be binding, they had better leave the school. If they remained they must obey. About two hnndred of those who had previ ously left, returned to-day by direction of their parents. A boy by the Dame of Quinn returned ibis morning under the escort of his father, who ushered him into the school room by the collar, and declared in ao emphatic brogue that he would “bate him and send him to the Reform School if he did not obey his teacher.'’ Other parents have taken a similar course, showing that tbe course of the priests is not fally ap proved. Tho boys who still refuse to attend the school, continue about the house 10 joyful 6quads, shout ing after tboeo who have taken pari in this mat ter when they meet them on the street, and evincing tbeir independence and freedom from school confinement in various ways. Mr. Dyer, the chairman of iheir school committee, is de signated by them with the eaphoaiousjand scrip tural cognomen of “Old TeQ Commandments,* and other epiihets not so biblical nor by no means so complimentary.
