Charles Hotel: EnTSORS or Glattirt : The Crescent City is noted for her patriotism in obeerting national events. Their patriotism, however, is more in outward dis play than any inward feeling, beyond other plum. The recant commemoration of the ever memorable eighth was celebrated with more than usual eclat. The near proximity of the battle ground tend. to keep alive the memory of this great event. The prussic* of Meat General Scott, the "Hero of Lundy'. Lane," doubtless contributed much to the interest of the occasion, and of the grand military and civic procession . ithout entering into any de tails of this interesting affair, being wholly of a local chnracter, we note one or two things that concern "the people" generally. The Stet thing that was unpalatable to a spectator of the Protestattaith, was to sea a man occupying the poetic, which General Scott dots to the mkelc American nation, forgetting thin:fact and being party to an arrangement which compelled him to go to the Catholic, Cathedral and listen to a Te Daum sung by a full choir, and an ad dress in French by the Rev. Napoleon Joe. Pemba, A Catholic priest How edifying to the larm" man of persons who could only understand the lingllah language! We are aware that the same thing <e coned when Jackson visited the otty after thei cele brated battle, and when Gen. Taylor returned from Mexico. Again, It is siegedar that the city author ities being aware of the large proportion-of persons professing an anti-catholio faith) should dace to at tempt such a procedure. ' ' It Is rarely the care that tiliwspopers, advocating clime of an extreme opposition character, professed ly. rhould unite in opposing the doings of the same Society. Diateuch is the ease In regard to the Sooth e., Aid Sociery, yrisore head-quarters are ttil New York. The New York Trrldne has long beem war ring against title Society, because of its hostility to every agency that seeks to Sid the South. Thth is in keeping with the views advocated by thi, journal. Rut for opposition to come from a religious paper in this city, seems strange. The editor opposes the pooiety for the following reason.: let, its Soeieta rianism; 2J, Its Nerthermlann 3d, Its Sectarianlim; 4th, iteJeruitiam. 'The language used in support of the foregoing propositions, are of the "scalpel" Order. There was a row of poets near his house, which he would not pass without touching singly, and If he omitted one In the series he retraced his steps to remedy the neglect; he hoarded up orange skins for some mysterious purpose he would never divulge; he suffered a remorse of conscience for having taken milk in his coffee on Good Friday, he believed in ghosts, and went ghost-hunting in Cock Lane; and maintained that he beard hii mother - calling for him by name in the other world. AN EXPERIMENT IN DRAININO.—When we wit nees..the change of a sterile eoil into a fertile one through the influence of draining, it la con clusive evidence of the MIRO of labor ee ap plied. Such has recently come under our no tice, and we shallrecall it fox' our readers. . - It not tuifrequently happens in hilly or gently undulating districts, that Intervale/1 and damp springy soils abound, requiring 'draining before It can be brought Into profitable cultivation. The instance in question, woe a field of fair sur face, quite free from stone, but receiving from more elevated land a continual supply of clear, cold, soft spring water, which ran over nearly the whole surface. The owner, faiiblees of re claiming tho lot, was yet deeirous of oolleotng the water to supply a reservoir for cattle. This was mainly accomplished by cutting a drain across the elope of land near the upper aide of the field, for about a hundred rode iu length, which did so much for draining the 'surface that other ditches were cut completing the work. The drainawero . finhihed with the fiat stone usual in such dietricts, carefully laid and, ouvorad with a good coat of straw, before replacing the dirt.. Now of the - change produced. - d crop never grow upon this lot from the time It was cleared until after it woe drained. Water grasses and'weeds Mere the only product; but since draining, it has produced annually over two tone of good hayper acre, without any matinee. The appearance of the veil is Wholly changed, from a tenaeihns blue clay, adhering LO one's boots like tar—it has become a Wear, black, clay loam—just such a soil as always pro duces remunerative crops to the farmer.—Coun try Gentleman.
