Brown then addressed the audience. 13e said witen oue of Scotland's if not the world's greatest eons woo about dying be said—" Loc khart, readito-me," nos in answer to the question "what be should read," Sir Walter Scott said "there is.but one book now,—the Bible." The eloquent gentleman then went on to say that of all the books with which the human mind is acquainted, the Bible stands forth as the moat solitary of books. It depends upon, it copies from, no other book. Of all other hooks it may be said they are founded upon eotoc Suggestion of some man, or drew their ideas from some ante cedent source. But the Bible stands solitary in its own originality. The Bible is not only . the most solitary but the most singularly conetructed book in the. world. It is the work of about thirty individuals. Its authors were gathered up from the most - different classes of men, from the prince to the peasant, nod yet it is perfectly con. sistent in all its parts. , It WWI written in differ ent ages, in different styles, now by a tent-maker and not by a king, and yet it has a begining, a middle and an end. The different parts come together in perfect enter like the different portions of a splendid building, a grand plan runs through the whole. The Itible, moreover, never grows old. Its truing are never shaken. All the developments of science are but the fortifications that the agee have built around it. /C is distinguished by.its lemons on the human heart, by its adaptedaess to all peoples and ages and climes. It anawere the great question which nothing else can anewer—“What shall I do to be saved." Let. that Bible govern in our Halls of Legislation and their acts tall be just; let it rule in our Courts, in our public marts, in our houses and in our sanctuaries, and — ill igno rance and vice and oppression shall cease, and the kingdoms of this world tall become the ,kingdoms of our Lord and His Christ. Rev. I. C. Pershing, of the M. B. Church of gist Liberty, then addressed the audience. lie said the-time Iran when it would have been con eideredchlmerical to talk about all denominations 'uniting in one in a cause like this, but now, thank 001], narrow and sectarian views are dis appearing, and wo can alt come upon one plat. form to work together and advance, the cant of truth. The speaker affirmed that Bible educa lion is essential to all true freedom. The only true democracy is taught in the Bible. Mr. P. then gave a nketoh of the history of ancient na -1 Hone, and showed that the only true freedom existed in early times among the Hebrews. What was true of the Old Testament is emphat- I licitly true of the Now. There ie no Instance of any nation enjoying true freedom who have not. the Bible as their guide. The speaker then in atitated a comparison between the french and American revolutions—the former an intidel,• I the latter a drunken revolution. The great les son taught by the history of man is that there is no hope ,but in the Christian religion. The speech of Mr. P. was very instructive and in teresting, and was !Wetted to with individual attention.' The congregation then rose and sang part of the 19th Pasha— .tiod's law is perfect and convert/I." A short address was then deliveied by Dr. in which he said it was noel poet nine o'clock, Kendall, when honest people - ought,to be at home, but he would not detain them long. Ha ;could ey that there was no work in which be was ' more interested than this, to eend the Bible and give the Bible to all.
