A poor woman sat opposite with six little children, the eldest immeely a dozen years old. The husband wan a stupid, hard-hearted wretch, and administered blows unsparingly to a wearied little thing who showed his discomfort by crying and frilling es the hotdoety air swept over his facia. The mother's countenance wore a look of patient despair and continual anxiety, as the little restless company eat crowded together in the loaded car. Not one of them looked shabby or untidy, though very plainly dressed. When the engine stopped for fuel the poor woman took out from a bestial. some bread, and cheese, which she distributed sparingly among the little group Great Heart bad watched their movements all the morning, and as a boy approached the carriage with a basket full of berries, hoboisght up boxes enough to go round, Hid pee them to the hungry chil dren, whose eyes glistened as they saw such a rare desert spread before them. When we Mopped for our dinner we saw them all seated by a bountiful table, loaded with luxuries to which they seem ed total grangers yet which they knew very well how to appreciate. We knew it was Great Heart's, and we mentally blessed the kind, gen erous nature that had thus shed sunshine on the hard pathway of the humble strangers. Christian reader, in caring for the souls of - the poor, do not forget their bodies. Toe dca AT GREAT DlPTHS.—Popular ideas with regard to oinking-of bodies in the sea, have heretofore been vague ; for the reason, perhaps, that the laws which govern this descent, and which are derived from the w-11-known laws of fluids, have never been fully defined In their ap plication to the depths of the ocean. Some im agine that ships which founder at sea sink to a certain depth, and there float about until broken to pieces, or thrown upon some bank beneath the sea; and, indeed, a certain writer in England has published a book sustaining this absurd no tion. Others, again, believe that the buoyant force of the water at great depths is enormous,. and due to the whole pressure of the column of water above, and that all bodies which are light er than water at the surface, will, If sunk to the bottom and detached from the sinker, shoot up ward with a great velocity ; or,-in other words, the density of the water increases directly with the depth. These views 'are erroneous. It is true the pressure increases with the depth, to the amount of 16 pounds upon every square inch for every 34 feet in depth; but the density is not thereby sensibly increased, owing to the incom pressibility of the water; so that neither the buoyant force, nor the resistance to the motion of any body, are sensibly !tweezed from the surface to the bottom. At the depth of 8,000 fathoms, for instance, the pressure upon a square inch in nearly 8,000 pounds, but the column of 18,000 feet of water is only shortened about 60 feet; the density is thus but slightly increased; but the effect of this enormous pressure upon compreesible bodies, as air, wood, &e , is to coa -1 dense them Intc a smaller bulk, by which they may be rendered heavier than water, and will sink of their own weight. A piece of wood can not float at the bottom of the sea, but a very slight extraneous force will bring it to the cur , face—Sal. Jour. intsu COMPLIMENTS.—The following oompll ments were paid to Sheridan in Norfolk, by an Irish servant belonging to Mr. Coke, who at tended him on shooting excursions, and which Sheridan retold with great glee - Shot the let (the birds all gettibg away)— "More power to your honor! Dtd you see one little fellow drop his leg as he went off He'll never stand on his tin toes again." Shot 2,1 (ditto)—"Taro an' agers, there they go! But didn't per honor hear the shot rattle among them like pule agin a Vntly ? They'll pray never to see your honor again on this aide of the country." Shot 3d (birds all off again)— "Tunder an' onus! but they've notched it! ' (After watching them awhile.) There's three wounded, anyhow, for they had hardly stringth to over yen hedge; the divil a wink of sleep get this blissed night." Shot 4th (a pheasant gets away)—Well, I never seen a poor gentleman taken like him; he'll remember your honor many a long day for that. The spallpeen Is carrying away more shot than would see up an iron monger at Skibbereen." Shot 6th (a snipe gots off)—"Bother! you may cry crake, my fine fellow—you may take your long bill to the other world. You'll wake to morrow morn ing with a lumbago In your eon head." Poor Sheridan could stand this no longer but gave Ms countryman a fee for his ingenuity and pro ceeded on his beat alone. A correspondent of the Rochester Union writes from New York thot : "Mrs. Cunningham, of Suedell murder noto riety, and her two daughters, are living in an elegant mansion In Twenty-third street, and ap parently In circumstances. Butte SOCIETT.—The thirty fitth anniversary of the New-York Bible Society was celebrated on Sunday evening, by appro priate ceremonies, in St. Paul's M. E. Church, 1 corner of Fourth avenue and Twenty-second 'street. The at tendance warliot large. Bishop dance presided. After devotional exercises and music the Annual Report was rend by Mr. L. Parsons. The report stated the Society whose anniversary they celebrated, bad no little influ ence in the great epiritual uprising of the people last Winter. Looking at New-York as a field of labor, the report held thit it was impor‘out, and , pre-eminently so, when the fact was known that WO thirds of oar inhabitants never entered the houseuf God, and thrit theatres and places of • business were opened and thronged on the Sab bath, and that, being a great commercial port, many new avenues were opened for Bible die tribution. The distribution in the city had been accomplished mainly through the efforts of the Rev. Alexander Watson. During the year he had visited 10,121 families, and had distribu ted 2,098 volumes. A few were given, at their ; request, to Engine and Hose Companies ; 77 Bi ; bleu and 27 Testaments had been distributed at i the stations of the Metropolitan Police. Tene -1 ment hounes-had been visited and explored, and 1 these possessed a peculiar interest. In one of these, in the astern part of the city, 1,500 per tsons resided. Among tho Romanista, there was an awakened pirit of inquiry. The position of the Roman p mauled was clearly one of marked antagonism. Fifty humane and criminal in stitutions h been visited, having inmates in the year to the number' . of 50,000. The Committ a on Naval Stations had distribu ted 217 Bible and 629 Teethmenis, and in nine uz different lan ages. Among the vessels which .had been sup lied, were"the United Stated fri gates Sabin and Wabseh, the receiving ship North Caro a, and the revenue cutter Harriet Lane. Fifty s 'lore had been converted during the past Wird on the North Carolina, some of whom had be n drafted to vessels now in other parts of the orld, and already such a feeling had been aro sed that in some instances daily prayer-meeti gs bid been organized by sailors i / i themselves, stops to secure to their compan ions the joys of Salvation. The Committee on Military Posts had distributed GIO Bibles and 1,113 Testaments; Sunday-Sobools had received 2,944 Bibles and 2,599 Testaments. Hotels bad received 290 Bibles. The distribution among emigrants had been conducted - mainly by the Rees. Stephen Smythe and Conrad Ruolling, and though the emigration had fallen of 00 per cent, yet 147 Bibles and 7,403 Testaments bad been distributed, and many homeward return ing emigrants had carried back with them the word of God. The distribution among the Scandinavian population and seamen had been facilitated by the Rev. 0. 0. iledstro. The dis tribution amongseamen and shipping had equal ed 1,970 Bibles and 49,564 Testaments, and had been made under the charge of the Rev. Mr. Pierson. Fourteen hundred vessels had been visited and supplied with the Word of Life, and hence Bibles were sent abroad to the distant islands of the earth. Captains and officers of vessels had manifested a willingness, and in come canes an anxiety, to receive books and dis tribute them among their men, and from these distributions they had board, in numerous in stances, the most gratifying results. The total I number of volumes distributed during the year by the Society was 47,406. The receipts of the Society were $16,781 13, and though its history had been one of continued and increasing pros perity, yet no time had been when they had so much reason to rejoice at their increased useful. nese as during the past year. 100 ........... 1 000 ..._...... 0 00 ........_.
