What gave rise to the diffieulty;w" as, that, In the ammo of a game for $l,OOO, Rooker played it secreted card, and was detected by Peel, who took the money, Rucker forfniting the pile by the false play. The ensuing day the parties met at the settler's store. Willie there, some remark; by a third party revived the eubjeet of the game, and the quarrel of words between Rucker and Peel took *more serious turn. Peel said that there was but one way to settle the matter—they mast fight. They adjourned Ma gda the store, and taking their station about ten' yards apart, drew their revolvers and Bred. Both fell at the first shot--Ruoker ehot In the breast and Peal in the shoulder. Ooe of Peel's fingers was taken off by the shot. The second ehot took effect In both. Rucker then rallied up on his knee and Ored twice. both balls hitting Peel. The latter, bleeding from six worindo, struggled tip from the ground, and resting hie revolver on his arm, and taking deliberate elm. ehot Rucker to the heart. LPtarorren Sroca.—Cold windland the "sore and ) ell. w leaf" of autumn forcibly remind the farmer of the necessity of early forethought and ample provision for the care of his stock through the coming winter. Upon the economi cal and anemessful way in whioh this is accom plished depends quitene much as upon any oth er thing, his encores in stock growing and in farming. "The merciful man is merciful to his beast," and will not let the unkindly blasts of winter, blow all too harshly around its unpro tected head. The farmer's first cara for hie stock should be warm shed and stable room for thewhole herd. In our opinion the stable Is the most profitable. Stock, to do well, mnit be kept warm, as it is impossible for them to do more than live while shivering, on the sunny side of the barn, stock yard, or rail fence. Every good farmer under stands that %certain amount of animal heat is to bo kept up, and this is dons by the consump tion of hay, 'straw, and grain, as heat is kept up in a move by the combustion of wood or coal. It is not proposed to enter into the chemical changes produced in the case of the food or wood—both are well acttatted truths—and the question presented. to the farmer ia, whether his animal or stove will be most easily and econ omically kept at proper temperature under a well constructed stable rehouse, or outside, ex posed to the cold winds of our northern winter. If you have the stables and sheds all prepar ed, you will make a note, and begin to look af ter stock. You find it bud economy to let them maga through meadow, field, orchard, and wood until compelled to comnbome by the thick ing thew. You may, it is true, have your mow and stacks untouched—but the cold frost bitten grass has afforded so little nourishment that your stock has already lost flesh. Believe me, dear air, every pound loot now, will cost the value of more than double the numbed to replace, I after they come to dry food. Commence early to pot cattle in the stalls far the night and feed them there, In preference to feeding in the yard or around some stack in a distant field. Cattle will rue over hay on the ground and waste-mush of it. Steeling at beet is but a poor method, for it will not take much cyphering to show that the waste In saving and : feeding out of doors will soon pay for comforts ble barns and feeding stalls. By .begloning early to feed at night the stock may run out days. Good bay answers every purpose bat there are stalks, oat and wheat straw which farmers design as a part of the forage far winter use. No one considers bread and meat alone palatable food for himself and family ; neither should he calculate to keep his herd through the winter on bay or straw alone. Hay may be fed once a day, and as a change, cut straw with the addi tion of a little corn or oat tea 114 or aborts, would Ige,rurl ,r?'l6l4f.a,,ye r a ice: epay cutting to fold. Roam should not be overlooked. To keepeat tle in good condition, they are very nutritious, and verve as a change from the dry food in gen , eral use. Carrots, turnips and beets can be so easily and profitably grown that no good herds man should dispense with them. They are easily kept and out, and should be used once a day at least, mixed with cut straw or stalks, or by themselves. It would be juet as reasonable to keep the !armor's family on one kind of food through the winter, es to keep a herd of cattle on hay alone. Variety is essential to a good appetite, but it is unquestionably true that roots will have the effect of making cattle more healthy, just no fresh food and vegetables are • better for those who go down to the sea in great lee. Natty of the wasting and fatal diseases which diminish the herd in spring, in our opini .n. might be presented by a judicious nee or root , end grain in winter. Water should not be forgotten when providing for stock; It is not enough that there sea brook in johd:r holiow, near half a mile from the barn, tot euale can hardly afford to go eo far In wet eel muddy weather; and the deep snow of mid winter they will suffer for want of water before they will expose themselves to the drifts and cold bleak winds. The water should be in the yard where it will bees warm as possi ble, and where cattle will be protected from the cold wind w ile drinking. Every one has ob served the vering of animals after drinking largely in mid winter. To prevent this they should have it often, not lens than twice a day. It is the practice of many farmers to let sheep go without water except that obtained by eating snow all through the winter. It is a great mis take. They will drink three or four times in a day when (bey can have water without trouble. Salt is important In the winter treatment of all kinds of Steck. A supply should be placed where they can obtain it at any time. Thin may be done by pulling some lumps in a box under a shed. They will taste a little nearly every day, never eating more than they need. When salted only at long interests they eat too much, producing bad consequences. One great object with farmers in wintering stook should be to make as much manure art possible, and says all that Is made. For this purpose, if not kept in stables, the cattle should be confined to the yards. All the manure dropped in the snow path, when wandering after water or running at random over the . fields is nearly a lees. Demotic animals are the farmer's apparatus by means of which his hay, grain, straw, roots, etc., are manufactured into dash, muscle, and bone as well as elabora• ted fur manure with which to feed the growing crop, and keep the whole farm In the beat con dition. They should claim a large share of the time and attention of every farmer, for lime who give such care, reap a rich reward. W. Ornate Farmer. Tux Esactsu Pales ON AltilltlCAN AITAXEUI. Oar English papers received by the Persia, de-. vote.a large share of their attention to Ameri can affairs. First among the American topics discussed is the recall of Lord Napier, the Brit ish minister. at Washington. It is generally conceded that he is to go as Minister.to Berlin; superceding Lord Bloomfield, who retiree on a Pension. Next comes the Central Sinerloan question, and on this. the English papers are pro lific. The Paris correspondent of the Lendon Post writes : The governments of England and Fracas have agreed to support the independence of Nicara gua, and, in the spirit of the Clayton , Bulwer treaty, countenance the project for cutting the Isthmus of Panama by a French or any other company:which may be aceepted by the Nicaragua and Costs Lin, States. There is.every reason ! to fear Mr. Buchanan backs the Monroe policy of considering. The government of America will, it is sup posed, insist on the Isthmus of Panama, belt% cut by an American company, and on merico, being the paternal guardian of the passage.: which is to unite the oceans. England and Franco bound by treaty to support the independence of Central America, and pledged to the Clayton. Bulwer treaty, will, perhaps, be called upon to! support their engagements. The London Gerald, the organ of-Lord Derby lays the utmost harmony prevails between France, England and the United States on thin ; important question, and it anticipates its early' and satisfactory settlement.. I i Dean ON THE MOUNTAlN—Romanttc Incident.— 1 We learn, mays the Shippenshurg (Pa.) Arles, ! from persona from that vicinity, that large herds i of deer hale been seen, and eeveral killed, on the South Mountain this season. A few days i since, a gentleman residing near Cleversburg, returning home from the mottntain, remarked ' to his wife that, had she accompanied him there ' to, she could have seen one of the most imposing eights one could witness—a herd of deer. She told him "that if he wouldfollow her to the cellar, she would show him as fine a buck as ho had aeon in the mountain." Accompanying her to the cellar, he was surprised to find one of the finest of the herd, a large. bu4 k, which she had slain! It appears that in thearly part of the evening elle heard the dogs on the premises keep up an unusual noise, sad pu suing them, she found that they were "worry' g a large steer." Seizing it by the borne , ehe fled for a knife, which was hastily brought h e , when she dis patched her captive. Nam rs repair to the settlements for food, which, e learn, is very scarce on the mountain. 1 . 111 English correspondent of the Independent writes, under a recent dale: "The West Indies has now an Encumbered Estate Act, and the Eret sale under it took place last w 'ek. I cannot at the moment refer to the exact r gures, but a tiny bit of the altogether "ruined" sland of Jamaica sold for something like a quarthr of a million of dollars, which was paid at once, and the transfer formally communicated front the New Court, by the West India Mail despatched the same even ing. Where is the estate i the flourishing South, and what its extent, which, without its human cattle and enforced labor, would sell at this rate'" Ernes's or FEAB.—A Parisian physician, du ring his visits made in a hired fly, had received a bottle of real Jamaica rum as a sample : but found, after returning home, that he had left it in the carriage. He went to the office and in formed the manager that he had left a virulent poison in one of the carriages, and desired him to prevent any of the coachmen from drinking it. Hardly had he got back, when be was sum moned in great haste to three of these worthies, who were suffering from the most horrible colic, and great was his difficulty in persuading them that they had only stolen some most excellent rum. ficarzscsn.—Flenry Kariher, who was arrest ed several weeki since for robbing the mail be tween Tarkman and this place, and admitted to bail in the sum of $50 4 ), forfeited his bonds and faffeiticruppeartrtr.the day.oer for trial.
