Bircnexen•s extraordinary letter to the Pittsburgh Centennial Celebration has taken the country by surprise, on account of its audacity. The Brooklyn Star says that the document itself is so cool that it mast have caused the late "cold snap" in the weather—arid continues in this strain: "That Mr. Buchanan, for whose election $116,000 woe sent in one day from New York to Philadelphia; who himself changed all the post masters in Illinois to defeat Douglas; who really paid Schell & Co., from the treasury $lO,OOO to take Fort Snelling, worth half a million; who has expended forty millions of the national trea sure during the last year to secure political power—should write the above, is enough to make a cold winter throughout the world, and we may as well prepare for iL" This "dodge," impudent as it is, is not origi nal with Buchanan. He brought it with him from London. When one of the fancy in that famous city relieves a victim of his pocket book, ho is among. the first to raise the hue and cry. "Tun Gazette of our city has, among others, permitted its columns to be disgraced by attacks upon the President, couched in language so ut terly repugnant to common decency, that it worked its own remedy in at once disgusting those who read it, and was unworthy of a seri ous reply." This is from tho Pittsburgh Post of Saturday. It professes to be a decent, truthfol sheet, and we now call upon it to make good the allegation in that quotation. We declare that we have never used one word "repugnant to common de cemoy" or any other "decency," in relation to the President. The Post has made an ungentle manly and untrue assertion in the extract above. SUICIDE OF A Bor.—lntelligence was received in Ravenna, 0., on Thursday afternoon last, that Lyman Goodsle, aged 16 years, a son of George Goodsle—s wealthy farmer, residing two miles north of Bhalerierille—had that morning commit ted enicide by cutting his throat. The lad arose on the fatal morning before day light, and as was his custom proceeded to the barn to do chores. When breakfast was ready, he did not appear, trAthis father, going in search of him, found him lliffo , vreltering in his blood, upon the tarn floor. When found, he was on 001310i01111, but alive ' — and from appearanoes had struggled severely. Medical aid was summoned, and he recovered enough to speak—but the love of life had fled, and he struggled to remove the bandages from his neck, that the fall accomplish. meat of hie purpose might be consummated. Ile died at 8 o'clock of the same day. The fatal deed was committed with a dull butcher-knife. The fret Incision was made too low to strthe the main artery, but cut the wind pipe two-third, in two. Fearing that this would be insufficient for his' purpose he took a jack knife from his pocket and made three additional incisions in his neck, so determined was he to deprive himself of life. Rumor assigns the cause of this rash act, in one so young, to different influences, none of which - we repeat. The boy was doubtless in a very despondent state of mind.—Ravenna Dem ocrat, 2d. This statement has just been contradicted by the great spendthrift poet, who says be has not sold the propertyfor that amount it being worth much more. GAS IN Br. PSTEILEIBUEO.—The R1195i1111 gov ernment has sanctioned thelormation of a joint stock company forllghting the streets of tit. Pe tersburg with gas. The company has been grant ed am exclusive right of lighting the principal airman for A term of 60 years, and has 111110 the lighting of all the lamps in the other portion of the city. Its operations extend, therefore, to every point where gas lights already exist. The capital is fixed at four millions of roubles. A Ma.
