Those authors who rail at 'established customs, call them false anti contrary to nature, and prate about "conventional image," are taken in hand is a very amusing and effective style. - The wri ter say, -Our commonest and most innocent habits, measured by these genttemen'a standard, will be found exceedingly rinveraoions, Are we all to walk about as in a palace of truth, and re pudiate all the recognized courtesies; of society because they are ohms: Am I to say to my good neighbor Mr. Tombins, whenever I meet him, 'Torukins, you are a bore, and yooought to know It; I can't waste my preoions time talk ing to you about the weather, or even about Mr's. The following story in connection therewith, Is too good to be lost, and as it is related with. great zest by the lady herself, it may not, perhaps, be improper for us to give it a greater circulation. Mrs. Otis had visited the private school in--street, and explained to the children the object of her visit the nobleness of the work in which the ladies of the country were engaged—and the proprie ty with which children could contribute to the memory of the iinmortal Washington. The children listened with great att ention to the ad dress, and on the dismission of the school, one of the boys went to his home, and applied thus to his father:. "Papa! don't you think that General Washington's wife was to our school to day, trying to raise money to boy a graveyard for him where he's buried, and I want a dime to pat in the contribution box." PLA MCI "TAU" WITH a Bean.—The Detroit Advertiser tells the following bear story : "Last Saturday morning, while a laborer living at Fort °Wird, was proceeding in a bout to Port Huron, he came up with a huge bear, swimmiag across. Ho struck his bearsbip, a blow °ter the head with his oar, when the enraged animal made for him, and climbing into the boat he compelled the man to take the water. The bear then followed him, and the man contrived to get into the boat again. A neighbor seeing his pre dicament came to his relief with an axe, and broke up this pleasant little game of "tag" be tween the man and bear, by breaking in the lat ter's head. It struck in its course the residence of Josiah Moody, about nine miles west of this place, where its effects exceeded in horror anything that the imagina tion can conceive or the pen portray. The place was swept as with a besom of destruction, every house on the premises taken up and scat tered to the four winds, and what is far more distressing to relate, Mr. Moody himself, and eight other members of hie family, wore killed, and eereral more severely wounded. Out of fourteen persons on the place, but one—Mr. Jackson, the eon-in-law of Mr. Moody—escaped entirely uninjured —Pctudiny (Misr.) Clarion.
