"A PLEA eon SLIA,IS."—The last number of

above title, directed at the popular writers of
the day, whose universal cry is, that everything,
as society is at present constituted, ie a "sham."
Those authors who rail at 'established customs,
call them false anti contrary to nature, and prate
about "conventional image," are taken in hand

whether you hove a good morning or a had one
I don t wish you any harm, but I want to get

Folkestone station on his autumn trip—he in
his nautical costume and Mrs. S. in her round

greatest guys of yourselves I ever saw in my

would it be an improvement, on the whole, on
the conventional type of our actual conversation
under the circumstances: 'Good morning, Mr
Totukins : hope I see you well; these easterly

of boating as ever, I see; and Mrs. Smith look

is; perhaps she knowe it is: but if she does, she
knows it to be a friendly one. Were Ito go
back to my veracities, imight prefer, being in
company with a fastidious friend, to cut the
Smiths altogether. The truth is, we live in a
world of shams and conventionalities, if you
prefer calling things by ugly names. All civi

A WOMAN MTN NINIETNEN CITILIMEN.— A
lady was passing along St. Clair street the other
day, and saw a little child lying on a pile of
sawdust in the cellar of n small house. Suppos
ing the child was.dead, she hastily knocked at
the door, and informed a woman who opened it,
of her fears about the little one down the cellar.
'-Oh, no," was the reply, "I guess he'e all right.
Johnny," elle called,"Johnny,what areyou doing
down there 7" Johnny responded and soon show
ed that he was alive and kicking. The woman
then said, "Johnny is my nineteenth, madam."
"Is it possible you have nineteen children!" was
the surprised inquiry of the lady, "Yes, and I
will show you the most of them," and ehe actual
ly mustered seventeen in a very few minutes !

IMOTUITSBIN4 ArrIDEFIT —The Laporte Ind.,

curred near Plymouth, one day last week. A
Dr. Bailey discovered on owl lurking in the Vi

A GoOD Jir. VZHNO.VSTORT.—Ii is well known
that Mrs. Harrison Gray Otis has taken a great
interest in the purchasing of Mt. Vernon,' and
is now engaged in visiting theschools of Boston
for the purpo-e of collecting frorthhe children
of America. thdr offerings, however small, to
wards this noble purpose. The following story
in connection therewith, Is too good to be lost,
and as it is related with. great zest by the lady
herself, it may not, perhaps, be improper for
us to give it a greater circulation. Mrs. Otis
had visited the private school in--street, and
explained to the children the object of her visit
the nobleness of the work in which the ladies
of the country were engaged—and the proprie
ty with which children could contribute to the
memory of the iinmortal Washington. The
children listened with great att ention to the ad
dress, and on the dismission of the school, one
of the boys went to his home, and applied thus
to his father:. "Papa! don't you think that
General Washington's wife was to our school to
day, trying to raise money to boy a graveyard
for him where he's buried, and I want a dime to
pat in the contribution box." The gentleman
contributed.—Boston Bee.
PLA MCI "TAU" WITH a Bean.—The Detroit
Advertiser tells the following bear story : "Last
Saturday morning, while a laborer living at
Fort °Wird, was proceeding in a bout to Port
Huron, he came up with a huge bear, swimmiag
across. Ho struck his bearsbip, a blow °ter
the head with his oar, when the enraged animal
made for him, and climbing into the boat he
compelled the man to take the water. The bear
then followed him, and the man contrived to get
into the boat again. A neighbor seeing his pre
dicament came to his relief with an axe, and
broke up this pleasant little game of "tag" be
tween the man and bear, by breaking in the lat
ter's head. Ile was killed and brought ashore,
Ile is said to be of the largest size, and will
doubtless weigh somewhere in the neighborhood
of 800 pounds."
Teaatno 111,11111eANS iit MIsmiIISIPPL—A vio
lent hurricane paseed over a portion of this
county, ranging from southeast to northwest, on
Wednesday morning of last week. It struck in
its course the residence of Josiah Moody, about
nine miles west of this place, where its effects
exceeded in horror anything that the imagina
tion can conceive or the pen portray. The
place was swept as with a besom of destruction,
every house on the premises taken up and scat
tered to the four winds, and what is far more
distressing to relate, Mr. Moody himself, and
eight other members of hie family, wore killed,
and eereral more severely wounded. Out of
fourteen persons on the place, but one—Mr.
Jackson, the eon-in-law of Mr. Moody—escaped
entirely uninjured —Pctudiny (Misr.) Clarion.
Some of the public journals express surprise
that the Indian war in Washington Territory has
been brought to a conclusion with such an nn
looked for expedition, and adds that this is the
more to be wondered at, when it is considered
that operations had to be carried on so far re
moved from the white settlements. We would
suggest.that that is the very reason the war is
ended, and has cost so little. There was no place
to rpend money, and hence no oF•iret in I:typing up
the war.—St. Louis Dem.
