The difficulties of the enterprise consist not so much in tho length of the subterranean communication which is to be effected, as In the Impossibility of taking the weskits hand at more than two points, and of getting the necessary supplies of air, at a distance of 10,760 feet from either end of the tunnel. All the other tunnels, which have been built, are connected with the surface by a series of shafte, which being sunk in distances of at most 1000feet,do - net only multi ply the point of attack, but facilitate and insure also the necessary circulation of the air, and the emulation of the workmen. This expedient can not bo made use of at tho Mount Canis Tunnel, for the shafts would have to be drlson to a depth of 8000 feet to reach the bottoat;and the auxil iary works would have to be almost more gigan tic than the principal structure. Shafts of that depth have .not yet been sunk in rook in any other locality—let alone the regions of eter pal show. , Under these circumstances the ton t/ell is only worked from the two extremities ; but though augurs of anew invention enable them to drill blasting bores of quite &consider able depth, in which the powder Is fired by elec trical sparks, it has not been possible to com plete mote than 25 to 30 feet per ',month, even under the most favorable circumstances. At this rate it will take fifty years to finish the work even without considering that the difficulties in crease with every step It advances, es the acme eery supplies of air, provisions, tools and work men will at last have to be forwarded over a distance of 18;000 feet from the entrance. Corroa to LIBIRIA.—The American portion of the population of Liberia have commenced, with much spirit, the el:titivation of cotton. President Benson, in a recent letter, says "There has been twenty times more cotton planted by American-LiberrianS title year than ever before, of both native and foreign seed, and I feel sanguine that its cultivation will in- I crease each succeeding year." A halt ton of of cotton eed sent out by the Mancheeter (Eng.) Cotton Supply Association has been planted ex tensively. The association has also offered prizes far the production of cotton, which Mr. Benson thinks will operate as a strong stimulus to its cultivation. A party of emigrants from Georgia sent home lately • sample of cotton of I •species which blossoms perpetually, and one of their number asserts that good Sea Island cotton can be grown in Liberia. GIDDINGR.—This distinguished gen tleman lectured last evening to an overflowing house, upon the subject of "The Laws Which Govern Gs." Mr. Giddings spoke for an hour and eight minutes to aft attentive audience, fre quently interrupted by hearty demonstrations of applause. Only once during the evening was there the least expression of dissatisfaction—and Mr. Giddings was radical In his remarks—until the lecturer denounced the Dred Scott decision, and then inch cheering and stamping and clap ping of hands drowned the noise of the few persons who fussed, until the latter, ashamed of themselves relapsed into silence, and Mr. Old dings pursued his theme. —St. Loui., Dem. The counties yet to hear from are Calhoun, Jackson and Williamson, which gave Ridardson 2,700 over Bissell in 1850. This would leave te Republican mnjori ty 6,344 in the whole State. Dix—who, impelled by philanthro pic desire to contribute towards an improve ment in the treatment of lunatics, also visited Rome. She told the Doctor: "I visited the Ito natio asylum, and my heart revolted at the sight. I did not see sick .persons whom man should pity, unfortunates whom we should endeavor to cure—they were brutes in chains, the dens of which seemed never to have been cleaned.. Se veral days after my visit to the lunatic asylum, I was presented to His Holiness the Pope, who knew the object of my travels. The Pope asked me In the mostfriendly manner, whether I had ( yet visited th asylum at Rome ? I had the courage to ans er yes, and lam convinced that your Holiness h not yet paid it a visit. Pio limo quickly :raised his head, and only asked with an expressitre, attentive look. I understood him, and relate to him In a voice full of emo tion, all the ho rr or and barbarism Iliad witness ed. I ventured trembling within myself, upon the bold expression of the unchristian treat mentl of then sppy beings. The respeetcom mending man o Christendom listened witlVear nest attention, d said brifly, after I had con cluded, "Come again in a week's time," and i then I left his ' resence. My anxiety was un uterably great. The Protestant and the strang er, had perhaps eked too much. Although I was conscious my innermost heart of my good intentions, Iwet passed a sleepless night, and a day of the deepest inward agitation. It created a deep sensation when the holy father, 'lwo days after I had beenpresented to him, sud denly, while tallug one of his drives, stopped before the gate of the asylum, and apent an hoar in it. The week had passed, and I stood as I had been commanded, in the Vatican before the Pope. In a manner as grave as it was calm, Pie Nino said to me, "I have appointed a commis sion charged to lay before me propositions con cerning the erection of a lunatic asylum, con formably to the rules of humanity and morality, in the shortest time possible. When you visit Rome again your just and pious wishes will have been fulfilled. I thank you for your com munications. May Heaven bless you."—From the Jewiel, Chronicle. The commerce of Japan is immense, and the sea along the coast is covered with their ships.
