Had a conversation with Shaw in the yord of my home, where he was paving; he was sitting down, and had en open letter- in hts bands; he said there was an offer in it of, I don't know how many hundred dollars, for the rendition of some fugitive slave, provided he would keep a watch an him, and as soon es be went into a slave State, and have him arrested; the fugitive, he said, was it good fardnee-builder, and sometimes took jobs it slave States, he said that he should watch him until be got him into a slave State, and there arrest him; the letter was well filled, and was written In a fine, 'business hand; this is about all I recollect of the cane. John Brennen, who worked with Shaw at the ,-Cathedral; Shaw wanted witness to hire Ferris and induce him to go to the Virginia line, under the pretence of doing some work; he said if he got him to Virginia be could take him before a 'Squire and bare him safe; be offered witness $3O to do this. Witness had a number of con versations with Shaw about the matter, and de tailed the various means Shaw proposed to en trap Ferris; he was to take some liquor along, for Ferris, which would be "fixed" for him, and witness must not drink it; he said he would have a bfanket and a rope; sad if he would not drink from the bottle, I was to clinch Ferris and then we waste*. Man; he complained of having no money, sod when I asked him how he would get Ferris to Alabama, he said Ferris had money, and,we could knock him down and take it from him; witness did not , know at the time that the man Shaw wanted was Ferris, and he apparently accepted Shaw's propositions, for the per 'pose of ascertainipg the name of the man; witness sent word to Ferris that Shaw was after him; Ferris came to him with Shaw, when the latter denied Ferris was the man, mentioned is letters which he had read to him, as being a ' fugitive slave ; the letters were signed by one Ragland.
