Rivr.n Murr.s.—San Proncino, Tun 5, 1858.—The excitement about the Frazer River mines continues to increase. All doubt inregard to their richness has been dispelled ; and the prudent men who counsel Mali adven turers to remain where they are, now rely for their main points upon the doubtful.extent of the rich diggings; upon the difficulty of getting, there; upon the great disadvantage of being un able to work in the winter by reason of the cold, and in the spring by reason of the high water; upon the high price of provisions, and upon the danger of a war with the Indians. Alf these points are well taken, and I cannot do less than say that the three thousand three hundred who have alreedy gone hence, and the tan thousand who are now making preparation to gosoon, many of them leaving profitable-occupations, are act, ing in a very unwise manner. The mines already discovered are certainly considerably in extent, but they alone are not sufficient to furnish profitable employ ment to all the miners who have gone and will go from San Francisco the next month. There ia a strong probability, from the fact the bars of a strewn so large as Frazer River are rich with fine gold, that extensive mines will be found' on many of its tributaries; but the probability is not strong enough to justify the risk which many incur. • The winters are so cold in the valley of Frazer river that the miners will be unable to wore at mining for about two months. `ln Now Caledonia, as in California, the bars on the rivers cannot be worked to advantage, ' except when the water Is low ; hue there are extensive mina in the gullies, relines and hill sides, which can be worked when the rivers are high, but -DO diggings have yet been found there, and unless they be found the miners will have to lie idle daring the greater. portion of the Spring and early Bummer. That the prices of provisions must be high in New Caledonia is clear. Three or four years must elapse before the country can be made to supply the main staples of provisions for itself, ' and many fruits and vegetables can never be raised in its clime. All imported goods must be brought in on pack animals, either from the Danes tip the valley of the Columbia River, a distance of ao miles from the ocean, and sev eral hundred of land travel, or from Puget Sound over the Cascade Mountains, where the lowest pass is about 6,000 feet high, and en tirely impassible on account of the mow, dur ing six months of the year; or the goods may be brought up Frazer River, which will probably be the most expensive route of all. To Fort Yale, 120 miles from the month of the river, is mandible for steamboats, but above that the transportation must be in canoes, which are towed up the river, part of the way and =reed over rocks the remainder to avoid high falls and fierce rapids- In a distance of 76 miles from Fort Tale to the month of Thougnotan River there are nine portages., one of thim over • mile in length, where the porter meet climb hills 800 feet high, and climb over nuMerons large rocks and boulders with perpendballar sides five and els feet high, when be alwayOnts down his load before attempting Co elleoriliP Or down, and then picks it up again with the assistance of a companion. Considering these circumstances, I think it may safely be said that no article of merchandise will be worth less than 25 cents per pound in Frazer River valley this year. It Is the general opinion of the miners who have arrived ben from the new diggings that there will be a bloody war before long between the whites and Indians, Many of the minors are border ruffians, who have no regard what- . ever for the rights and feelings of Indians, and who will not fail to insult and wrong them. The state of society will be such that orderly con duct cannot always be expected. The border ruffian, will give the Indians whiskey, rob them of their gold and abuse their women, and the Indians will fight. It may be supposed that perhaps the English Government will be more edicient than the American Is in similar eircum stances and that In New Caledonia the Indians will be protected from the brutality of the bad white men. But even if thin were so, there would still be war. The whites anti Indians mulct live in peace together. The white mon will drive away the game and destroy the fisher keen which the Indians have subsisted. In a few months the waters of Frazier Riverwilllose their crystal clearness, and be turned into • thick mud by the wash of a thousand sluices. The Indian will then no longer be able, with his Sutnttitre: Cilln7C aresxae ittsburgt 6itytte. ANDWZEILLT DT B. Ft, X 73 7", X. El dv a Co.. RPM IMICT. The horses and cattle of the whites will destroy his cm fenced potato patches. Ills best camping grounds , will be taken by the pale faced Intruders. The ' graves of his fathers will be violated, his chief degraded, and he will find himself an outcast among strangers. Unable to learn the ways of civilisation, and finding none to teach him, if he were capable, lie will steal to sustain life, and will be punished for not sliming to death, and at last be will raise the war cry and die musket in hand. Such are the arguments which I have to adiance against going to Frazier river. Ido not dilate upon hard living, because everybody must expect that in a new country. A gentleman, writing a private letter from Whatcom, says: "I have seen the gold brought down by mi ners, who have been obliged to leave the dig gings nn account of their inability to procure food for sustenance. My experience by working in the mines of California, during the space of eight years, enables mo to say that there is no doubt but that the new mines aro very rich and very extensive. Mining is easy and water abundant. .... Div. Wm. G. Price writes from Port Townsend a letter, which to published in the Alta. 'The following is an extract: "There are a great many miners coming from the mines every day after provisions, and going back again. Three men got here yesterday from the diggings with $l,BOO In dust, and they sold it for $l6 60 an ounce. 'They were np there a little over a month, and they leave here again to-morrow to go bast." A correspondent of the Morning Can, writing from Fort Hope, says: "The best that I can learn . Is that lately the miners have not been able to make more than $4 to $6 per day, and some only $2 or $8; but they all think that when the water in the river subsides, they can make better wagee—eome say they will be able to make $2O to $3O. As far as I can learn, the ravines and gulches run ning into the river have notyet been prospected —the miners than far having turned their atten tion solely to the bars. This country looks to me very much like a gold region." We publish this morning a letter from a re aponitible source,. =folding a new and most re markable chapter in Central America diplomaoy. Upon invi tation he rose and said : "I began to feel bad,and did notexactly know what ailed me ; it seemed to me I was very bad, and very wicked. I thought I'd ought to get religion and become good; every one seemed to be getting religion around me. Well, wife thought I'd better go to meeting with her, and u) .. try if it wo d'nt make me feel better ; lirea - a strange plate for ens, but I went ; they asked 'em to rho fo prayers, and wife wanted me to rise, but If It I couldn't do it unless I took the whole pew with me. I felt bad, and expected every minute to see the roof, steeple and all, come down through on top of me. Wall, I got out o' that as soon as I could, and went home ; wife went with me. I felt all the way home as if I wanted to pray, but what did I know about praying ? However, we went into the home, ' and upstairs to our room. Still I felt bad and wanted to pray. I wished wife would go out of the room, but she would'nt and dld'nt. I hauled off my coat, and that did'nt do any good. I pull ed off my vest, and that did'nt do any good ; Ulm no use, I oould'ut stand it, so down I got on my knees besides the bed and went to pray ing ; I don't know what I said, but wife said she never heard such a prayer, and! don't thinkshe ever did. I went to bed, but gall didn'tdeel any better. Next day John T—,[a friend of his notorious all over town for his habit of constant swearing,] came to me and says : 'What's the matter, El- _.--.--?' aye I 'John, I don't know, I be lieve I ought to have religion. and em trying to get it' 'Well', says he, f 3—, I feel just so, too; now I don't believe what half of these fellows are saying around here, bat you go ahead, and if yoit get religion tell me, and I'll believe you, and4'll try for it, too." Pretty soon the minister heard about me, and called at the home to no moil told him how I felt, and he seemed to know just exactly what ailed me; he knelt down and prayed with me, and while he was praying I don't know what came over me, but I felt as light and happy as if a load of fifty tam had been rolled off me. I cried with joy, and it seemed as if the tears came from the very soles of my feet. I prayed there, I went down cellar and prayed there, out In the wood house and prayed there, out in the barn and prayed there, up in the barn-chamber and preyed there, I felt so happy, did'nt know what to do. "Well, I went down to my °hop happy as I could be. Presently some one came down and told mo that my bogs were out. Well, what of it' What did I care about hogs, I had some thing else to think about then; pretty soon they dame and told me that the hogs had got into Mr. D—'s garden, and were rooting up his ' plants ; then I had to go and look after them. Well, I tried to get them into pen, and after a while succeeded, and didn't swear a word, and that was something I never did before in my life—to get them hogs in without swearing— but I did it then and didn't 'weer a word. I started for my shop again, and had hardly got there when they lent me word that my bogs were out again. Well, it did seem as though the Devil w in them hogs and was trying to make me swear, but be didn't do it. I got them in the second time and bad a great time of it, too bat I didn't swear a word, and you'd better b'lleved I nailed 'em up then so they would stay there. On my way to the shop, happy as I could be, .I met John T—again, 'Well,' says he, 'li—, how is it' 'All right, says I, 'John, there is religion, and I've got it,' I Wheys you,' says he, .and I'd give my hog if I was where you are, but I'm not far astern of you ; go ahead, I'll Boon be along side of you, I told him of the trouble I had had with the hogs, and ho said he believed the Devil had gone out of me into the hogs, and I think .
